What are the most pretentious games ever made?

New Vegas certainly is, all thanks to Ulysses and his retarded characterization
I'd say Fallout 3 as well with its "dis is ur destiny!!!1!" to die in a stupid fucking room when your giga nigga super mutie bro can't do it for you, because something something you're supposed to be as heccin noble and self sacrificing as Liam Neeson was (who also comically kills himself for no reason lol).

It's depressing. Forget picking up a dictionary, hardly anyone in this thread even bothers with the definition. Pages upon pages of "game that displeases me for this reason".
I feel like this is an even bigger problem with the word "woke". There really need to be some standards in place for how we determine if a game is pozzed.

I don't care if a character in a game *happens* to be gay, so long as they actually have a purpose in the story besides just making gay presence known. Alexander the Great had same sex relations, does that mean Rome: Total War: Alexander is woke? Of course not, I don't even care if there's gay romance options. (key word here being options) What I don't want is being forced to "appreciate" gay pride among a backdrop of "Homophobia bad".

Its the libcuck moral preaching I can't stand.

I rewrote this post because I didn't do enough of a good job explaining why The Begginer's Guide is pretentious:

The game is a walking simulator where the game dev narrates over the games an ex-friend of him created, the game dev lost touch with his friend called Coda, Coda used to create "games" (which in reality are source engine maps) and he hopes that by creating this game that walks you through all the games Coda created, Coda will see it and get in touch with him, Coda was a depressed man that would create lots of game projects but never finish them because he was depressed, and sometimes Coda would disappear for weeks or months while creating these "games".

Some examples of how pretentious this narration of these "games" are:

  • You play a game where you are in a space ship, and at one point your character is told to sacrifice himself by jumping into an electrical current inside the spaceship to save everyone else, when you do your character dies, then the narrator (the game dev that pretends he had a friend named Coda) steps in and tells you about how the game has a bug where your character starts floating and goes into space outside of the spaceship, Coda saw this and left it in, because maybe he thought it made you fell small around the vastness of the stars that you are amongst now, or maybe he interpreted it as your spirt floating away, in the game dev words: "It Juxtaposes a peaceful end against all the hysteria you had to tranverse, I don't know, I don't know what Coda was thinking, but one thing is for sure, something lodges in his brain and he starts to create games with these weird experimental designs that go in all directions", and then he uses that as a hook to introduce you to more shitty source map games.
  • 2026-04-08 21_31_01.png
  • The next "game" is one where Coda wrote notes to himself on how to make the shittiest hipters games imaginable using floating words as reminders, for example: "A key in one games unlocks a door to a completely different game" and "You walk around talking people down from pursuing their hopes and dreams
  • [*]2026-04-08 21_32_36.png
    [*]
  • The third source engine map is about a character that starts the game in a big prision, and in this prision you must walk into a cell and lock yourself in it, the narrator says that the original game made by the fictional Coda would lock you in that cell for an hour before letting you out.
  • [*]2026-04-08 21_34_56.png
    [*]
  • After the door of the cell opens you must walk into a room with 3 human like figures that have cubes for heads and ask you questions about "The world above".
  • [*]2026-04-08 21_35_27.png
    [*]
  • You get the idea of how fucking pretentious this fucking game is? This is about 20 minutos into the game.

The game is extremely artsy and hipster to a point I can't accurately describe, to give an idea of what the game and game dev is like I can tell you about a stream he did, in this stream he listened to the game director's commentary plus 3 other videos at the same time that were somehow related to his game, and he is streaming himself playing a video game while doing this, you can't understand shit obviously because there is 5 sources of audio jumbled together, but this is the kind of thing that stupid, untalented people think makes you smart and a good artist.

There is no gameplay and you just walk around shitty source engine maps while listening to the story of a non-existent game dev friend that was depressed, I got so tremendously bored and it was such hipster bullshit that I refunded the game and got my money back since I didn't put more than two hours into it. The ending of the game is that these games were never meant to be played by anyone, Coda didn't want that, but you played the game anyway. The game feels like the thoughts and feelings of the game dev being projected into a fictional person, "Look! I was gonna be a game dev but I was depressed, I would start a shitty pretentious game but I never finished them, I would quit making them for weeks or months, only to come back to a completely different project because I'm too lazy and unfocused to actually work towards my goals and living in a world of hopes and dreams about what I will create is more comforting and easier! You were never supposed to see this games...".

Surprisingly this game has around 90% positive ratings on steam, how?

Expedition 33 is a fucking slog with a terrible reliance on countering enemy attacks with a retarderly obtuse timing rhythm game.

But I've never hated writers more in a game because its generic jrpg (but westerrrrrrrn!!!!) plot demands to be taken seriously when it can't even figure out its tone or present a realistic characterization for the world it presents.

But what pissed me off the most (I dropped it at the paintress and I don't care enough to go back) is that the early plot is a miserable, tedious trek of characters saying they know information about things and then just not telling you (the player) what the fuck is happening. There's constant allusions to world building and background lore that every character is aware of but it's never stated to the player. The game presents this as 'figuring it out as you go' but its FOUNDATIONAL UNDERSTANDING about the world these characters inhabit and it just doesn't fucking tell you things. And then it has the gall to demand to be patted on the back for doing so, while making it impossible to know if new information is defying the casts expectations or unknown to them.

It would matter less if the main character wasn't the specialest ever mary sue who is literally the chosen one the world revolves around or was even slightly likeable. And the actual likeable character (it doesn't explain what his retarded plot necessary macguffin arm actually does BEFORE THEY LEAVE IT BEHIND) gets more death flags than a cop one day from retirement.

It presents a world in which the population is culled on a yearly basis and the motto of the expeditions is 'we're all going to die, but lets make progress for the next group to die so eventually someone will succeed' and then expects us to have believe characters are emotionally shattered by.... the fact people both have previously died and that people die (i'd give it a pass if they hadnt shown the CORPSE QUARRY moments before this with comically large numbers of bodies. Totally nonsensical piles of corpses).

You can't show me a society with complex mass death rituals and a social structure designed around the fact once a year a culling occurs then somehow the cast is just uwu good girls totally unshaped by the reality they live in.

Anyways e33 is pretentious as hell and doubly so for presenting itself as an indie studio.

Was F3 pretentious or just poorly written? From my memory it was moreso the latter.

Given it’s a French product we have to give more leeway, it’s simply in their nature to be like that.

Nothing new under the sun, every word in the English language gets stripped over time of its specificity in proportion to usage. I blame schooling putting too much focus on the concept of “synonyms”, priming people to ignore the subtle coloring of similar words.

There's a five part essay written by the late Shamus Young where he absolutely ripped into everything retarded about Fallout 3's story.

I hate to say it because I love the premise but Tyranny is pretty pretentious. I love the idea of a setting, you have a bronze age-style dictator who has a history rewriting power called edicts, but I'm sure you can already see where this goes wrong. To pull something off like this you have to take it very seriously, I feel like?

But someone at Obsidian was like "what if we just make Caesar's Legion again? I like raiders in my Romantic aesthetic", and so you have this weird military where there's an elite core of the Dictator Kyros' troops called the Disfavored, who while having some Roman-like appearance, are ultimately something you'd expect to see out of stuff that's more Middle Ages-inspired? And then the Scarlet Chorus, who are basically the riff-raff, are just the Legion with a bit more coherence to their look.

Not mention I'm not a fan of the style. The hand-art looking like a crappier version of Batman the Animated Series, I think undermines the seriousness of a world where evil has one. And I'd say that's the real problem with the game, there's some strange choices here, and they didn't have enough time to flesh out the world, so you end up in a weird place where the game doesn't live up to it's premise or the tone it's trying to set, resulting in it feeling very pretentious.

Tyranny came out in 2016 a year after Pillars, and you can tell Obsidian was starting to think a little too highly of themselves. Hopefully this doesn't just devolve into an Obsidian thread because I feel like that's a real risk here.

Pretentious is highly subjective and around the 2010's it became extremely common in gaming to try to "send a message" more than actually build the game around a concept. Rarely any game that gives a message manages to pull it off.

The Begginer's Guide is pretentious
I think it really defines the issue with not even doing the legwork of creating games, treating the message/moment as more important than the game that leads to it. It's all "concepts" that only work by the commentary giving a background for it. You basically pay to hear the developer masturbate for an hour.

Calling E33 pretentious is so fucking stupid.

Like I already said, a lot of people here will just list games that took their plot seriously and they didn't like them

How is E33 jerking itself off to what is effectively just a shitty French final fantasy fan fiction not pretentious?

It can barely figure out what tone it wants in between doing a basic bitch hero's journey and trying to evoke emotion out of killing a retard with a magic mcguffin arm after LITERALLY having a scene directly before he dies that exists only to shoehorn in the most blatant, stereotypical death flag of all time and never elaborates on the point of his retarded magic mcguffin arm.

You constantly have notes from other expeditions dying, which fine fair is the point of them, before it shows you the fucking Murder Quarry with bodies stacked high enough they could have only fed more french into it than the Somme. And somehow the fact the expeditions are dead is a traumatic event for Mary Sue despite that being THE MISSION STATEMENT and one of the few things in world building that actually gets discussed.

There's wacky murder monsters the cast is entirely aware of and trained to fight, but then the poetry owls and fight club trees are somehow only known to myth?

It's sloppily written and everyone I've ever met who defends it is a faggot desperate for a final fantasy game that's less outwardly weeb in its overly designed QTE laden nightmare of a combat system.

Even if you like the game, it's pretentious as fuck in it's presentation and the studio is out here doing a 'being a small indie studio is so hard' shtick when they got a blank check to outsource as much code as they needed to make baby's first dark fantasy.

i am fairly convinced you have no idea what pretentiousness even means at this point

pretentious
/prēˈten(t)SHəs/
Pretentious is an adjective describing people or things that attempt to impress by exaggerating their importance, talent, or culture, often in a pompous or artificial manner. It implies a negative, showy, or self-important demeanor.

“And also I want to extend thanks to the unsung heroes of this industry – the people who make tutorials on YouTube on how to make a game – because we had no idea how to make a game before,” - some hipster trash frog jerking himself off about how he's a humble indie dev after working at god damn Ubisoft.

If Gone Home is pretentious (and it is), this shit is also pretentious. And even if it wasn't as a standalone project, the indie larp and eternal shilling by games journalists and its fans about how it's the second coming of Christ is.

You were supposed to care because Aidan Hughes (who did KMFDM albums) did the art
It's incredible how this dude literally just stole the 1920's and 30's Soviet propaganda poster style, made it worse, and his whole career is just doing the same thing over and over again. Blocky linocut style prints with big areas of black, that sawtooth "shading", dynamic comic book poses.

basic bitch hero's journey and trying to evoke emotion out of killing a retard
E33 is not a hero's journey, it isn't about the expedition or stopping the Paintress.
It's not my fault you stopped playing when the biggest twist of the game is dropped and the real premise of the story is shown, nor do you even know who the protagonist is.

Maybe it shouldn't be shitty for the first 10 hours if it wants anyone to get invested unless they're an autist who enjoys shit like persona 5 having a 20 hour tutorial.

I stand by it being an annoyingly pretentious 6.5/10 rpg propped up by journalists and weebs desperate for a jrpg wrapped in french berets and mimes, but I'll play further in case somehow it was only pretending to be retarded so far.

I don't think it getting better writing wise will make me find it less obnoxious (the combat system relying on QTEs genuinely sucks) but maybe it'll decide to unfuck its plot for the second half and at least earn jerking itself off like Disco Elysium does.
