What are the most pretentious games ever made?

Braid and anything published by Annapurna Interactive.
Remind me, is Braid the game that became infamous because the dev couldn't stop sperging the fuck out on twitter, or am I getting it mixed up with another? All the indie games that came out around that time all sort of felt the same, in a weird way.

You might be thinking of Phil Fish/Fez but that's fair because Jonathan Blow/Phil Fish together are so representative of a certain period of indie game wankers ruining shit for everyone that I remember someone coining the term "Blowfish" back in the day for games like that which have little substance beyond the personalities behind them rampantly jerking off.

In both cases it was never really the aftermath (like Fish's twitter meltdowns) that made them infamous, it was trying too goddamn hard to frame themselves as great artists while they were just making the same kinda silly little gimmick platformer shit everyone else was doing. Think "a toilet" versus "a toilet with a 2000-word artist's note on a big plaque next to it".
Or the author's commentary in Getting Over It, but unironic. Unironically.

Unfortunately they were both part of an in-group that had the ear of cocksucking kingmakers like Derek Yu who over-promoted them in the early days, thinking this kind of public masturbation was a road to legitimacy for indie games as an "industry", and it blew up on them in a dozen different ways. Like the joke that was Indie Game: The Movie, and Fish shooting the bunny by burning down his label along with Fez 2 over supposedly an argument with a journo (lol)... but transparently because he's a talentless hack who couldn't have delivered a single new idea for the sequel anyway.

the only game that ever truly pissed me off was Carpe Diem on Steam, been a long time and i dont want to trigger myself, but it's a short but long enough to feel fucked investment wise visual novel that basically ends with "lol it's just a game go outside"
I also played Carpe Diem, and I agree. Even replayed it to see if anything changed. I guess in 2020 they updated sprites or something? Game was and still is free at least.

Overall, its 5 minutes tops. You go on a date with your girlfriend, Ai, choose 1 of 3 choices, get some dialogue, then she crashes. Big reveal, she was just a computer program. Then the game ends. You even get an achievement named "What are you doing with your life?" Apparently, there is a sequel, but that one costs money so who knows how it is. It is essentially a critique of VNs but doesn't really say anything. Its one saving grace is that its short and free, so you can only ever waste a little time on it.

In a similar vein is Away, which was given away on Steam a bit ago. It is quite literally 3 minutes, there's some dialogue as a light gets closer. It is nothing, and the devs put it on sale for 3$. Granted, now there's steam refunds so nobody should waste their money, but who knows. There's also Hamlet or the Last Game without MMORPG Features, Shaders and Product Placement, which was just an ok 2hr point and click with quite the name.

well, Phil also couldn't code or make a game, almost all the work was done by his basically invisible partner who left shortly after Fez came out, Phil was the Idea Guy, so without anyone to work with, especially the guy who basically created Fez, he sure as fuck couldn't make Fez 2.

No that guy (who yeah, came up with the concept and engine and everything) actually "left" at the very beginning of development because he wanted to make something interesting and Phil wanted to make something gay and boring. "Like Ghibli" apparently. His big artistic vision was having green grass and a blue sky, you see. That's why Fez is so gay and boring and has no ideas in it besides the rotation gimmick.

Something similar happened with the original audio guy, btw. The two of them then released DYAD together, as if there's any doubt which of the three was the dickhead.

Phil got a new programmer by, for real, asking on DeviantArt and teaming up with the first guy who replied. He coulda just done that again, but for all I know that dude was still around. Apparently he, uh, didn't inform his studio members that they were closing down when he pulled the plug in that twitter post.

(Edit: by the way, Phil was a big TIGSource forums user at the time... so I guess you can wonder for yourself why he wouldn't look for a new partner there, where gamedevs actually hung out. Guilty conscience? Maybe DeviantArt is a more artistic place to find an artistic programmer? It's a mystery.)

I hereby Nominate, DmC, AKA the one with Donte.

Ver archivo adjunto 8832140

As a diehard fan of the real franchise, I despise this game, and it is bad for what it did to Devil May Cry, however, completely seperately, it is incredibly pretenious, it spends all of its narrative and lore push to dump on topical real life political and social figures and making loose expy's in game, the main villain is almost assuredly an expy for Donald Trump pre-politics, there's a Sean Hannity, expy, and others.

Donte himself is incredibly abrasive with zero redeeming qualities other than he eventually wants to help humans simply because, and likewise this games take on Vergil is childish and silly and wants to rule humanity and guide them as their new Strong Man dictator, simply because, the game has many many fucking stuck up flaws that spawned because the creator thought he was the coolest man on earth and could barf that into a game.
Westerners adapting japanese stuff think the key is to make it really stupid and angsty because thats their entire opinion of anime and japanese games. They understimate the audience they are trying to appeal to and produce garbage.

Derek is so frustrating.
He was an instrumental part of a really nasty racket ...but he actually walks the walk.
He's an extremely skilled creator and he's got a golden legacy of (deservedly) influential content under his belt.
Why the fuck was he hanging out with such washouts? He didn't need to cling to SHIT! He already had it fucking MADE!
Maybe he owed some people for promoting the original Spelunky ...or Aquaria. Maybe he just wanted power.
I wouldn't call his games "politically incorrect" (they used to be!) but they're pretty morbid and you fucking bet that he wouldn't get away with all the mythological allusions if he wasn't of Southeast Asian descent.
(Also, IIRC his parents were ancient game designers too. He was showing off graphics for a roguelike they made in collage.)

Nah, he had already taken over the TIGSource blog by the time he released those, which for those who don't know was basically the initial authority on independent games from before we were even really settled on calling them "indie games". Like, even Cave Story got the majority (?) of initial English-language exposure there.

There were a couple of other writers, and one of them would tag in to promote Yu's games. It'd be Derek, Derek, Derek, another guy posting to promote Derek's game, Derek.
That was always a bit stinky, but nobody could say anything because Derek was the one who decided if you got exposure or not for a long time. Though he'd be pretty fair with outsiders, as long as you didn't interact with him enough to decide he didn't like you.

I can't really judge him as a developer, since iirc he mostly just billed himself as "the artist" on the team with whichever (usually cool, especially the guy Zoe Quinn killed) guy he worked with until later when he started getting referred to as a designer. I like some of his games, but that's no reason not to detest the fucker.

He's basically the sole reason all indie devs ended up talking like cloying faggots with no personality who end every sentence with a happy exclamation mark!
That was the personality you needed to fit in with the marketable group. By the way, the really in- part of that in-group also happens to be the "secret journalist mailing list" you may have heard about from a thing called Gamergate. And that fucker started tone-policing super hard in the exact manner that later caught on everywhere just a couple months before it all went down, coincidentally. It's insane he isn't more infamous.

I really respect the guys who got out from under his regime with their balls intact.

Bioshock Infinite was the first time I've ever felt I was playing a game from inside it's own asshole so that one.
Agree. When it came out I found a coworkers steam profile via a very funny negative review of the game. We've been friends ever since.

That far cry in montana fucking sucked and was up it's own ass too.

Bioshock Infinite because le Multiverse and dreamy stupid shit, the game was still good nonetheless though, even liked the DLCs

GTA IV partially and GTA 5, oh my gooood tha social commentary, murica capitalistic hellhole amIrite guyssss??

Derek Yu probably gets the pass from most because none of his games got pushed super hard. Like Spelunky was kind of, but not of the levels of Braid or Fez which were put on a pedestal before they even came out.

But yeah he definitely deserves all the shit. I even checked his wikipedia page to see what he has done lately and instead of games it says "ludography" lul

its double stupid because the game tells you there are infinite possible dimensions, yet come the DLC where the often Porn Adapted older version of Elizabeth is now hunting down the last version of Comstock.. how could he be the last? its INFINITE you dumb slut!

one can't fucking confine infinite possibilities to finite amount of Dad's to kill, yet they do, then the godly Elizabeth loses her powers for no reason and dies to set off the events of Bioshock 1, which I think Levine must have thought was so poetic.

glad he got to see ole Liz be only remembered for her porn debuts over the actual game, fuck that shithead.

I think it's by virtue of the fact that literally everyone else in that boiler room was a loudmouthed deadbeat grifter who did all the dirty work for him.
Also, guy hasn't missed once - maybe Aquaria, I didn't play that shit - and he caters to a cult, nerdy audience.
He's a shrewd shrewd businessman, that's for sure.

I guess Jon got away too ...but he's an even weirder case. The "cult, nerdy audience" thing still applies though.

If you've played Alan Wake 2-3 years ago you'll remember it as great, because you remember the good parts. If you, god forbid, play it again then you'll remember why it is so tedious.
I played Alan Wake in college and the only thing I remembered about it was the manuscript pages. I don't even really have the words for how fucking frustrated I was that the manuscript pages outright spoil everything that's going to happen seconds before it does. It undermined the story and meant I couldn't get invested in any way. Also I found the gameplay unchallenging too.

My personal most pretentious (and disappointing) game is Scorn.
Tl;dr: it was a shat out underdeveloped game that had no purposeful story or world building, and the devs had to release storyboarding/concept materials after the fact to retroactively give the game any sort of narrative or meaning.

I waited fucking years for SCORN, only for the gameplay trailers to misrepresent the final game and some named features like the morality decisions completely missing, and NO NARRATIVE WITHIN THE GAME. It also has the most disappointing ending I've ever experienced in any medium.

You are born into a Walking Sim Bekinsky world, and do some very simple puzzles. At one point you die, respawn from a flesh wall, and this looks like it's setting up some kind of game mechanic. It isn't, this is a setpiece, any other time you die it's a game over. You find a couple of weapons, both of which are similarly setpieces. You almost never use them, and the 'grenade launcher' is more of a puzzle key than a weapon. After your scripted respawn, you're attacked by a creature that looks like the 2-legged runners in Dead Space 2: it begins damaging and crippling your character as it fuses into you, but again, this is a setpiece. It damages you in scripted moments, and then is surgically removed in a scripted moment just before the game ends.

Just as the game looks like it's about to begin having a plot, you die and the game cuts to credits. The parasitic monster is removed from you, you do one or two more puzzles, and then the parasitic monster shows up AGAIN and manages to instantly 100% fuse with ou on the spot this time, leaving you a deformed flesh-flora thing that is effectively dead just as a story was about to begin. The ending is so abrupt and disappointing, the fan base at release was almost entirely people theorycrafting about what literally anything in the game means and what the point of anything was. It was so lacking in substance I saw people saying it's pro-communist, anti-communist, anti-capitalist, a libertarian critique of society, transhumanist propaganda, pro-intersex mutation propaganda, and any number of other retarded things.

As one example: I made a joke in my Steam review that someone in the game left a fridge open and the contents went moldy, and that's how one of the enemy types exist -- and because the game has no explanations and no context and no world building whatsoever, there is nothing within the game that refutes my joke theory.

It was eventually revealed Scorn was basically in development hell the whole time, due to the devs being artfags who knew literally nothing about making a game before going in. It only came out because Microsoft basically screamed at them to shit out a product. The devs had to externally release tons of slapped together background material to give anything that happens in the game any kind of context. As far as I'm aware, those external materials are still the only way any story/meaning for the game can be found.
At least MONGOL is someone's literal schizo ramblings, which makes it more intriguing than SCORN.

do people even look fondly back on GTAV?
that game has legit one of the worst writing in the history of gaming and worst of all it has no soul in it.
cant wait to play gta6 with its history of saving the big ass latina abuelita´s house of something retarded like that. the game will never match my head cannon of bonnie and clyde crossed with point break. no video game ever should cost 2 fucking billion to make.

It's not like you play GTA for the story, but a lot of the game felt like shit. And there really wasn't much to do. Or much you even could do without getting two stars. Good lord. You got a star from simply crashing into someone IIRC.
