What are the most pretentious games ever made?

Maybe it shouldn't be shitty for the first 10 hours if it wants anyone to get invested unless they're an autist who enjoys shit like persona 5 having a 20 hour tutorial.

I stand by it being an annoyingly pretentious 6.5/10 rpg propped up by journalists and weebs desperate for a jrpg wrapped in french berets and mimes, but I'll play further in case somehow it was only pretending to be retarded so far.

I don't think it getting better writing wise will make me find it less obnoxious (the combat system relying on QTEs genuinely sucks) but maybe it'll decide to unfuck its plot for the second half and at least earn jerking itself off like Disco Elysium does.
I mean it does, there's a reason people like that plot, and especially the ending

There was some Flash platformer (on NG I think, as if that narrows it down) that started with a disembodied voice walking the player through a char gen and it was intentionally and invariably demeaning; specifically I remember it’d always prompt you to pick your gender as a fill in the blank declarative (“I am a [blank]”), and whatever you picked the voice would then force you into the opposite (“No, you are a [blank]”). There were other questions but it kept the same condescending tone.

I never beat it because it was either too hard or poorly made but there was some kind of self-discovery/abuse-survival narrative. I want to say this was around before the Gender Explosion happened and I’ve always wanted to find it to go back to it and find out how up its own ass it was.

As a diehard fan of the real franchise, I despise this game, and it is bad for what it did to Devil May Cry, however, completely seperately, it is incredibly pretenious, it spends all of its narrative and lore push to dump on topical real life political and social figures and making loose expy's in game, the main villain is almost assuredly an expy for Donald Trump pre-politics, there's a Sean Hannity, expy, and others.

Donte himself is incredibly abrasive with zero redeeming qualities other than he eventually wants to help humans simply because, and likewise this games take on Vergil is childish and silly and wants to rule humanity and guide them as their new Strong Man dictator, simply because, the game has many many fucking stuck up flaws that spawned because the creator thought he was the coolest man on earth and could barf that into a game.

Don't forget the devs making a big deal about how their new OC heroine a much better, fleshed out female character than Trish and Lady, when all she does is get kidnapped, borderline sexually assaulted, and hide behind a trash can during the final fight of the game.

E33 is not a hero's journey, it isn't about the expedition or stopping the Paintress.
It's not my fault you stopped playing when the biggest twist of the game is dropped and the real premise of the story is shown, nor do you even know who the protagonist is.
Do you know why the original Nintendo is capable of displaying any esoteric symbol and doing things like hanafuda cards and astrology readings?

It's because NINTENDO was a hanafuda card company from back during the EDO PERIOD, where they had to hide their gaming behind depictions of the Shinto/Shingon, in order for the Tokugawa to not crack down on it, as playing cards and other forms of western gaming, including gambling, were banned.

For a bunch of multimillionare elite industry developers to go get European Union money to make a cargo cultist's version of a JRPG, forcing a bunch of Judeo-British Masonic symbolism in a skin deep imitation of Japan, and trying to draw allusions to the Belle Epoque period of Adolphe Thiers (a nationalist) almost 100 years later, is in fact, pretentious.

The game may be good but it's a skin-deep imitation of Japan's long standing tradition of embedding esotericism into their games. In the context of Japan this makes a lot of sense to do. In the context of a bunch of millionaires leaving Ubisoft to go take European Union money, it's cynical and up it's own ass.

These people got money from globohomo for a shallow, fart-sniffing imitation of Japanese gaming tradition. That's pretentious and there's no way around it. Doesn't mean the battle system isn't good or that you didn't like the story, but the very premise of the game and the means with which it was created, are indicative of a bunch of people who love the warm confines of their own asshole around their face. The game could be great to play, but it objectively smells like European farts.

It's a cheap imitation of something Japan does authentically, paid for by governments, in a cynical attempt to peddle soft power. It's pretentious.

Yeah, that's probably my main critique with the game now that the hype has died down; It's highly derivative of JRPGs that came before it, to the point I was constantly thinking about what game they took inspiration from with every plot beat that was introduced. That said, I still don't think that's pretentious from the devs, since they wore their inspirations on their sleeves on interviews, instead of denying it and thinking they made something truly original; So the pretentiousness of the game really comes down to the people who more often than not, don't really play JRPGs, giving unearned merits to the game.

Look at the leads for the game, they're former Ubisoft leads who never held a position in the company other than leadership roles their rich families got them into. And then they left those jobs they didn't earn, and took a bunch of EU money, and told you it was an indie game, despite having hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal.

But at the same time I'm not trying to compel anyone, for the simple reason that games are meant to be played and people enjoy playing it. I do have to ask though if this massively celebrated piece of gaming from literal elites, the children of powerful financiers who didn't earn where they are in the industry; if that doesn't make the cut for pretentious then what does?

Still people love playing the game I have to concede that, and that is the most important function of a game, the play.

1. Japan didn't invent JRPGs. JRPGs were invented by Sir-Tech and Origin Systems. Early Falcom games even directly ripped artwork from Ultima and they were successfully sued. Atlus were never sued but the UI and gameplay of the early SMT games are directly ripped from Wizardry.
2. Esotericism in Japanese games was due to the occult becoming a fad in in the 80's and 90's, nothing to do with random Nintendo trivia

You are incorrect on both counts.

Japan's love of Wizardry inspired the creation of the JRPG, Wizardry is not a JRPG. But I'm not going to argue with a guy who probably doesn't even know who David W Bradley is or that John Romero's wife developed Wizardry 8. I just want the third party reader to know that you're peddling half truths. Wizardry was a western game. It is a Dungeon RPG in it's purest form.

Also, Nintendo was a hanafuda company and it's origins in hanafuda are why the NES can render almost any esoteric symbol you can think of natively. It's absolutely nothing to do with your perception of occult popularity in the 80s, and everything to do with their heritage as a company. Go look up the history of hanafuda and Nintendo themselves. Trust me, gambling was the motivator.

I'm not discounting anything you are saying, however, none of it makes it dumb that French people utilized the imagery of a style of painting THEY INVENTED to create a story and setting that takes from elements of other games that THEY ACKNOWLEDGE in doing so.

Please describe the NES's occult symbol rendering hardware.
I'm assuming that the PPU does the job. Describe the relevant memory addresses and how they function.

Masons were illegal in France prior to the French Revolution, they are using the symbols of the Jacobin who waged the Terror on their people.

They are imitating the Japanese in a cargo cult fashion. Nothing "33" is French. It's British. It's Cromwell who opened the guilds, which lead to the development of "Free Masonry". Along with the fact the Belle Epoque, a period ushered in by nationalist fiscal responsibility under Adolphe Thiers, a man who hated the revolutionary history of France and left Bonapartism; personally I think it's indicative of them trying ot mix anything they can to give a similar vibe to a Japanese game. Furthermore, I don't think it's a very coherent mix of things if you have any interest in French history.

Art Nouveau of the Belle Epoque was the exact opposite of the Terror the Masons brought to France. It was the product of them finally rejecting this foreign influence after nearly 100 years of on and off bloodshed. They finally head peace to create.

You can't just mix things together and tell me it's deep. Sorry but I'm going to analyze it. And the fact that it falls apart on closer inspection is a case for it being pretentious.

You clearly already understand it. I'm not going to engage with a dishonest person any further.

the only game that ever truly pissed me off was Carpe Diem on Steam, been a long time and i dont want to trigger myself, but it's a short but long enough to feel fucked investment wise visual novel that basically ends with "lol it's just a game go outside"

i mean im sure if i bought a limited edition of dustborn thinking it was going to be a good game i'd be more pissed technically, but the most pissed i ever get is creator ip suicide for "the message", such as, fuck neon genesis evangelion's canon ""ending""

anything that basically involves everything stopping for pee wee herman to be lit up and say something like "this was actually all about me, irl, the entire time, literally a metaphor" or the most basic bitch fucking message. like if the sopranos cut to black and then gandolfini turns to the camera and "hello, i played the character tony soprano. remember, crime doesn't pay." and then bryan cranston goes up "yes, i play the character walter white, and in the end, he died alone and fucked his family. don't do drugs. thank you."

something like nier with a certain amount of 4th wall is okish but pushes it. neon genesis isn't a game but is the answer for 500, alex. i will fucking fight, bleed, and die on the hill that every fucking spin off ended better than the main series, the harem school shit, the main plot adaptation manga but shinji's 25% less retard etc.

if you make a property you bleed into, that's fine; kind of natural even if you don't see it, but it's like soapbox preaching. non ip suicide ver is akin to ulysses in new vegas, who is a character that DOES have motivations and plot, but is 75% just author taking over soapboxing and creating factions themselves and then saying "they're all shit and flawed, fuck you, you're wrong". which stands out because there's characters like mr. house that make you do fucked things, but you think about them yourself and realize especially from the frame of ""realism"" with not being a godmode player character that does what they want, they're the harsh but "correct" choices, or like caesars legion, which is the harsh answer to a new harsh world. then there's that fuckin oc nigger.

This was very hard to read and I got the point, your idea was that you don't like it when a game preaches a silly message in a dumb way, and it does so in a way that ruins the experience but please write more clearly for the love of God.

when it came out i pirated it because i thought the opening to this game looked fucking awesome, but then very quickly realized it had absolutely no self awareness and wasn't trying to be a parody or something. it was just a bad game

I hate it because it was made by someone who doesn't care about Devil May Cry, or even know about it.
Dante has, in the entirety of the extended franchise, explicitly cursed (aka fuck) once, for instance.
another is, Dante should use some human weapons and some demon weapons, to denote his heritage, hence why he uses the excellently made Ebony and Ivory, in DmC they are also demon weapons, and look retarded compared to Ebony and Ivory in the real games.

Same with his Heritage itself, in DmC he's half Angel half Demon, no human about him, Angels shouldn't really play into DMC's side of the broader franchise (of which Bayonetta is incredibly loosely attached to) and nor should he be half one, for obvious fucking reasons.

Most people should not think Dante is cool, badass or have him in any personal esteem in-universe, everyone who gets to know Dante in the real setting view him as a broke layabout, not as some "Save the World badass", he's the guy they come to, with money because they know he needs it, to do the job, that's the bit.

among other fuckups from that faggot Tameem or w/e his name was.
