The ending for season three ruined it for me. Having a guy sit down and explain the plot and mystery to the detectives (and the audience) point-by-point is the laziest, shittiest way to end a mystery story. Plus, the structure, pacing, and general plot outline is almost beat-for-beat a repeat of season one.
It's literally a season one remake and fizzles out just like season one. But the difference is that in season one the two detectives are redeemed as heroes and they inform the media of everything with those mailed packets. The ending is Disney level or like Lethal Weapon buddy cop style.

In season three the main detective is literally so stricken with dementia that he has Vietnam flashbacks that warp his perception of reality. And his mind is destroyed from old age. And that the most important moments of his life to the world, solving the case, didn't have as much of an impact on him as serving in Vietnam. He doesn't remember his wife and kids anymore.....just hunting Vietcong in the jungle.

I saw the first ep of season 4 and one thing that's working very well for me is the worldbuilding.

The small arctic community seems like a grand setting for this kind of story.

Maybe, but that's what usually happens. Someone confesses, i.e. explains the plot to police detectives. Usually because they feel bad about what happened, or they feel like they need to justify their actions. The detective's task isn't to solve a mystery, it's to find the person who can explain it to them.

Yup, that was the intent, to do a similar story but challenge S1's premises. Cops aren't hypercompetent philosopher-detectives, coercive interrogations are bad and harm innocent people, the drive to connect the dots and see conspiracies wastes resources, women aren't accessories who can only fuck and nag, solving a crime doesn't give you a new perspective on life or fix what's broken in you. Repudiating S1 like that, or at least taking a different perspective, was really neat.

Anyway, some notes I took while watching Midnight Country or whatever it's called episode 2:
First scene, first gripe: They wonder why the corpses are naked and no one suggests paradoxical undressing. I don't think it was paradoxical undressing, as it would be unusual for multiple people to do it at the same time, but it should be the first hypothesis and they should have discussed it.

Old hippie lady listening to Song of the Siren, getting high with a cop and talking about her sex life and her ghost boyfriend. Ugh. Cop seems to think seeing the dead is perfectly normal. It's a shame these characters are so disgusting, "Death didn't change him" is a pretty good line. Death is, objectively, the final change, at least the final change in this world. But it also freezes people in our memories, where we keep them unchanged. Rust and Marty could have done something with that line.

They found an extinct microorganism in the ice that could stop cellular decay. This is more-or-less the backstory to The Turing Test, a really good Portal-like game. Less funny than Portal, more philosophy. I recommend it. But why were they trying to sequence the DNA of this thing up above the Arctic circle? Why not put it on ice and fly it down to ... I don't know, Maryland or wherever spooky people play around in BSL-4 labs?

"You wouldn't talk to me unless this was really serious, would you?" Show, don't tell!

The dead people sculpture in the ice rink is kind of cool. I hope someone made off with the prop and uses it to decorate for Halloween. Or maybe Christmas.

"No one can stand you." SHOW, don't TELL!

They finally mention paradoxical undressing, but only after realizing the clothes don't match the bodies and were neatly folded, which rules out paradoxical undressing.

Oh gosh, they're bringing back Tuttle. I thought the spiral was just a visual memberberry. "Hey, remember spirals?" If they're trying to tie this in to S1 and the cult ... when they couldn't achieve immortality by murderraping children, they decided to try science? On the other hand, the Irishman got the tattoo because Annie had it, and there's no connection between Annie and Tuttle United as far as we know. So these might be two parallel lines of memberberries that only appear related if you've seen S1 but don't think too hard about it. And Tuttle United sounds a lot bigger than the regional church thing Tuttle had going in S1.

Are we going to get a Jodie Foster sex scene? Yup, he's got her up on the dresser like it was a pinball machine. Perfectly good bed right there, too. And when they get on the bed, it's all disconcerting Dutch angles and arguing. Everyone fucking on this show seems to dislike each other, except the kids who made the sex video which is problematic in its own way. They're taking something that should be nice and making it ugly.

Was the Irishman trying to resurrect Annie with the organism from the ice? Is that what they meant by "She's awake?" Is there a tongueless zombie wandering around the wastes?

Sad part is, this show has elements that I really love. It's in a area with snow, the scenes take place mostly at night and it has (or it alludes) to something out of the ordinary, be it paranormal or alien.
It gives off some of the vibes of The Thing and Terror Season 1 and I can't help myself like that.
But alas, the good things end there.
Next, we are introduced at every step with le 56percents mutants, we have all manner of gays and dikes of every color, we have whypopo bad boohoo shitskins have it so bad boohoo, hamfisted current year stronk womyn and pointless interpersonal drama.
Oh, and female leads fuck with bras on. Actually, now that I think about it, that's good. I don't care if it's some empowerment thing or burgers being scared of nudity again, but I'm thankful I don't have to see some war crimes tits. Getting Daddario to whip those sloppy puppies in season one was a blessing and another thing that made that season the best.

The not shitty version of this season already exists, it's called Fortitude (although a lot of it is in...Norwegian or Swedish). It's everything this season is trying to be without all the hateable characters and shoehorned minorities.

It even has Stanley Tucci. Unfortunately the second season has Dennis Quaid instead of Randy, but even he isn't that bad.

Ignoring everything else that's terrible about this season of the show, the music selection alone is absolutely awful. It isn't even just the song choices that are bad though; it's how fucking unnecessary music is in most of the scenes. Not everything has to be a fucking musical montage. HBO must be really desperate to give this shite the True Detective branding to bump up the viewership.

It's worse than that. They are directly tying this season into the first season. And basically tarnishing the first season by joining it to this dumpster fire. Rumor going around is that they asked Matthew McConaughey to make some sort of cameo or film a scene as well. So they either kept it a secret because he turned it down and they didn't want to disappoint anyone. Or we are in for a truly awful retconning of the first season.

Talk about failing at reading the room. No one wants to see his character back because there's no reason for it. Not everything needs cameos and callbacks and reunions. Can you imagine if the movie Come and See (1985) ended like Return of the King with our characters all coming back, dancing and singing, the girl who was raped is just fine now, etc. Just do that. That's the equivalent of bringing back McConaughey for True Detective.

After seeing episode 2, this show would be much improved if it:
Wasn't a True Detective sequel
Removed the Native stuff and that annoying chick with the cheek piercings
Kept the focus on the cool creepy murder/dead body stuff, either supernatural or biological
Get rid of the weird underage lesbian romance that we are forced to watch
Basically, just make a completely different show with cool horror/isolation themes.

Still enjoying it but got to agree with many of the issues.

What I dislike so far
Kali Reis is not a good actor and is noticeable weaker than even the extras. I think the character she plays is fine, just let down by her poor acting. It feels like they wanted someone with her physicality who was partly native, and this came above finding someone who could act. She is overall the biggest issue with the show as she is the co-lead, rather than a bit character you see maybe for 5 minutes across the full show.

The whole druggy sister plot, feels cliche and right now unneeded. Maybe something more will come of it later but I still doubt it was the best thing they could have came up with.

The call backs to the first season. I really hope it doesn't go further than it did in episode 2. Not every mystery needs to be solved or answered.

Leah Danvers, the whole porno tape with someone younger than her just made her creepy and makes me actively root for something bad to happen to her. No idea why they couldn't have just made the love interest the same age as her, if they needed to have the plot in the first place because the show clearly wants you to sympathies with her.

The intro theme is awful and poorly sets up the mood for the show

This is a small issue but really question the ai posters, once you notice them in the scene you are just looking for all the errors they have instead of watching the scene. Surely would have been faster and cheaper to just use posters from WB movies and shows? I doubt anyone would find it odd for him to have Matrix or Road Warrior poster.

I've since changed my stance on Green Room it ended up clicking with me on a rewatch think it's a pretty good time once you accept its rhythm.
I guess it helps if you were into that scene. I went to some punk party and some nazi skinheads were there and some Indian punks were pissed. It didn't get crazy and they ended up tolerating one another.

The creator cried "sexism" when the audience didn't react to the show the way she thought they would. Variety even talked about the director's temper tantrum. Of course they're trying to connect it to the first season, because connecting it to a good season would maybe make people watch this current season.

They look horrible and I'm sure someone could've made something way more authentic or just print out old show flyers and plaster them on the wall.

She's fucking with the faggots in that scene, she doesn't want to be there. I mean s2 isn't the best thing ever, I'm not dead set on defending it, but if you think that scene or anything drawn from it is the reason why it's bad...well, you're just wrong.

I mean the entire season is worth sitting through just for the few scenes with Colin Farrell and his "kid." Some of the best TV ever.

Yeah, I got that impression. But it was still hackney'd and I'd describe the writing as "Whedon-esque." Sorry, I think Colin Farrell's a great actor, Phone Booth is a great movie as is Killing of a Sacred Deer but no, I will not venture forth into season 2.

Started watching Season 2, better than expected but still a dramatic drop in quality from season 1. But so far is lot of lines like "I really like big dicks" that just don't work and feel unnatural. Also agree with the assessment it is overloaded with main characters, which makes it lose focus a bit and is leading to some of them not getting the screen time they need.
