The scariest thing about “True Detective: Night Country” is how straight it had to be to survive

"So, if you liked last night's episode, and have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe head over there and leave an audience review?" López reportedly wrote on X, which she later deleted. "The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it's kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones."

Fear of low ratings in the wake of numerous other LGBTQIA series that got cancelled because even now, in 2024, normy audiences still can't make room for depictions of relationships that wouldn't be conveniently marketed to in a Hallmark store, if they even have those anymore.

"Night Country" was bent for the straights, if that's the way they want it. And those still catching up after the first episode, who may have been holding on to hope that Danvers and Navarro would hook up later in the season, are sure to be disappointed. Spoiler alert. Sorry. But at least straight men are happy-ish. Right?

So looks like this show is doing great!

There will never be another TV experience like season 1.

They are under NDA not to reveal the ending for the sites they write for. But the vague talk has been that there is "no murderer". That the real killer was "global warming". And that the one dead female tried to warn everyone of the dangers of oil drilling or whatever the mining company was doing and they killed her so that they could keep drilling and making money. But then the toxins from drilling and mining got into the water supply and killed the town as revenge from "mother earth". The poisoned water is what's causing the hallucinations. The scientists all kill themselves out of guilt of poisoning the earth.
So like Pathologic but shitty.

True Detective season 2 wasn't perfect but I loved this scene.

I really appreciate what Colin Farell did to bring Ray to life.

Edit: to get back to S4, I've enjoyed concept of the mystery murders, but it sounds like they're gonna shit the bed. Not surprised. At least it's a conversation starter with some friends and family who are full-on consoomers. Season One is still the GOAT miniseries for me, regardless of genre.

Episode 5 is better than 4, and show has finally started to move it's legs again. Feel like the makers had one moment of self awareness of how awful the daughter is, but then went back to how they have writing everything around her.

What is sad there is a good show in here. If you toned down the supernatural stuff, replaced Kali Reis with a better actress and removed the plot with her sister, removed the random old lady who found the bodies, wrote the daughter as if we are meant to dislike her, cut repetitive stuff and allowed things to move forward faster, show would be much better. Hell give more time to John Hawkes character, and instead of the sister plot maybe you do more with Trooper Evangeline Navarro and her link to murdered girl, that would have also helped.

Even with out major rework I'm sure they could have edited it down to a 5 episode series instead of the 6 it is, and that still would have been a much improved to point of being good depending on footage they removed.

None of the detectives show any urgency at solving the biggest homicide case in the history of Alaska and they have zero reaction to what would be the single largest news story internationally (also where are all of the reporters?). The dialog is probably the worst or near worst in the history of any HBO project. The actual forensics and investigation are done like a comedy with bodies thawing at ice rinks and a frozen man getting his armed ripped of and screaming (another thing that the detectives do not react to whatsoever). No FBI presence or private security shadowing the detectives either.

The retconning of season one is also idiotic. The Tuttles rose to power in the Louisiana because of religion and poverty. They were charlatans that took advantage of poor and rural families to build a small religious outfit. Now they are some global conglomerate on the level of Weyland-Yutani. And are involved in Alaskan and Arctic drilling machines and international mineral rights? And have billions in industrial equipment and scientists and researchers?
I'm sure they could have edited it down to a 5 episode series instead of the 6 it is.
This was originally written as a 90 minute movie called Night Country. HBO needed some higher profile stuff because of the strike and turned it into a six episode True Detective miniseries. There is not enough content here to fill even one movie. There has been under an hour of actual 'detective' work so far.

season 1 was great season 2 spawned Vince posting i didnt watch 3 or 4 but some of the reviews ITT suggest 3 its worth watching, but im not touching season4.:ruse:

Season 3 is kind of overrated because everyone expected it to be a dumpster fire and it ended up semi-competent. Stephen Dorff turned out a good performance and not as much magical negro stuff as you’d expect from the Hebrew Box Office but that was about it in terms of positives. Season 4 being the highest rated is fucking hilarious.

Just found this thread and wanted to chime in that this season is hilariously incompetent and the music choices are awful and so on-the-nose that I actively cringed. Also, they managed to take what should have been a pretty good premise and fuck it up so badly with terrible writing and plotting, that there are exactly zero stakes going into the last episode.

In a just world Lopez would be banished to the Negative Realm for taking a tarnished but legendary property and making something not out of place on the CW, but we all know she'll fail into a $400m Disney project.

3 wasn't bad. Not outstanding but not bad. 4 makes 3 look like a staggering work of genius.

Season 4 is for the birds. It is a terribly written show. It doesn’t matter if it’s got troons or Godzilla - it’s just written terribly so. I have sympathy for you going onto the the second episode to give it a fair shot, perhaps even the third.

After that there is no excuse; you are a glutton for crap TV and should be banned from using the remote. You need to seek professional help and are probably in an abusive relationship.

I say this with total honesty of only knowing the first 2 episodes and not a shred more - it reminded me of the show Fortitude and I assumed after episode 2 we would find the virus/insect/organism being leached out of the ground by mining and the people against it were following the beliefs of their ancestors to not upset the old ground and release it.

Nope, it was a freak weather event unless the final ends up changing that.

Also got to say for how bad it has turned out, not having an awful time, it's interesting in it's badness. But if I wasn't watching it week to week would be a much harder watch.

I've really tried to like season four.

I thought the first episode was promising. Loved the vibe, Alaska North of the artic circle, during it's constant darkness cycle, incredibly mysterious murder to solve as the plot point, I liked the supernatural elements to. Alaska is a spooky ass land and a paranormal horror element fits right in with the setting and premise.

But the writing has been just soooo bad. Nothing makes any sense. They've abandoned the mystery and plot itself in favor of unnecessary character development. It's a soap opera more than it is a mystery. That worked for Twin Peaks, but it doesn't work for a 6 episode season of an anthology show.

Still gonna finish it but darn if it doesn't feel like sunk cost fallacy.

I regret recommending it to some friends a couple coworkers after I'd only seen the first episode.

From what I'm reading, the ending of Season 4 is very awful. A surprise I know. I've been mostly following the True Detective subreddit rather than actually watching the show, in part because I was pleasantly surprised that it's full of people calling shenanigans on Season 4 instead of circling the wagons and declaring it to be a masterpiece that the CHUDS just didn't get because they are intimidated by proud women of color who have cheek piercings.

These are the worst fucking detectives of all time

What a piece of hot garbage

I physically cringed and turned it off

"Time is a flat circle..."
oh piss off. These dopes behind this season do not get to drag a bit of Season 1 in as a callback or unearned reference to tie their crappy season to a good season.

There are so goddamn many positive reviews.

I feel like I'm going insane.

I just watched a TV show in which an entire team of scientists decide to rage-kill a woman over ICE SAMPLES, an act that was revenged by an all-star team of cleaning women and crab factory employees who decide to commit the dumbest murder of all time, and every professional critic in the world seems to be fawning over it!

This is nonsense. Utter goddamn nonsense. Putting Season 1 away for a minute, if this was just someone's script project or short story, you'd hand it back and be like, "You know, writing isn't for everyone."

Ruthless - where posters tear into Alan Sepinwall's positive review of the finale.

I think the ratings are going to speak for themselves. IF she somehow gets that Disney project it'll probably never happen like the other dozen Star Wars projects they keep giving people.

The Leftists on Twitter have been pissing themselves over how amazing the show is. That's the only forum I've seen praise it.

I don't know why there's so much hate for Night Country in this thread, I thinks it's very brave and a good sign of the changing attitudes in media to have a show be this open and proud of being written and directed by an AI.

I have never seen a show shit the bed like Night Country, first episode is a legit a good watch, then drops the ball like crazy. Unlike MCU shit or other bad shows, this one is still watchable and it engaging to pick apart what went wrong, rather than just being boring.

The fact that if they just went, it was all supernatural would be less intellectually challenged than the cleaning ladies formed a gang and did shit we got is pretty funny. And they kind of had no idea how to end the story of Officer Peter Prior, so his wife kind of just forgives him, not that he did anything wrong. The show and especially the last episode both feel too long and rushed at the same time, which is such a rare site to see.

Having seen all of it now, I would put season 2 ahead of it. That show had some better characters and some superb scenes, even if the full thing never came together. The final of season 2 had issues, but still was able to end the character arcs for all the main ones. Looking at online reactions, a lot of people are now reassessing season 2 in the wake of Night Country.

Well, I finished it, and it was disappointing and forgettable. What started off as what could have been an interesting, supernatural-tinged story very quickly turned into wasted potential. It also ripped off a whole bunch of shows and movies, but without any knowledge of what actually made them good in the first place. Fargo (the movie/early seasons), The Terror season one, Wind River (movie about revenge due to the rape and murder of a native girl that actually has a pretty cool ending), Fortitude, and a whole bunch of Nordic/Icelandic thrillers have all dealt with these exact themes in cold locations miles better than this terrible mish-mash of a show did. Also, what was the point of the polar bear in this? Was it the dead kid? The dead kids toy come to life? A hallucination?
Basically, you could remove a lot of the subplots of this and it would impact the show very little, showing that nothing in this was of any importance at any point.
