A whole fleet of ships was wiped out by the Dominan between seasons 5 and 6 of DS9 and the federation lost control Betazed durring that same war. Both of those were worse and why the Borg had such an easy time getting to Earth in First Contact.

I forgot the fall of Betazed especially given how murder insane Jem-Hader are the civilian death toll sounds horrific.

Fairly sure First Contact happens before the Dominion War kicks off.

It was the 90s, audiences couldn't keep up with a serialized story like today according to studio execs at the time. You can thank Bob Iger for that when he fucked around with Twin Peaks.
That attitude was pervasive since 1950s and especially in children's media.* Which was why it was a huge deal in the early 80s when Hill Street Blues first aired as a prime time non serialized series. With other prime time shows immediately following suit.

*Most "children's" shows and cartoons are complete shit and the target demographic knew it. Kids tolerated them in order to get the good shows sandwiched in between the shit.

Anyone know of any more military disasters in Star Trek on par with Wolf 359?

Rip lwaxana. Maybe if Picard wasn't getting cucked by some 500 year old bimbo he could have saved the real waifu.
What is the point of casting a real theater broad if she's just gonna sit there like a statue the entire movie?

TNG movies always got the worst villains, scripts, child actors...

So of course the love interest is also the worst one yet. They’re consistent, I’ll give them that. What a production.

I always wondered why the TOS films were head and shoulders above the TNG ones, even as a kid.

It's not like there were no good writers in the 90s.

That is why I was disapointed when Enterprise was announced instead of a follow up to DS9.
Hell, there were two separate Voyager episodes set post-DS9 where Deanna Troi appeared, but she played second fiddle to Barclay. I like Barclay, but they couldn't even make a reference to recovering from the Dominion War? Even Lower Decks had an episode about building diplomatic ties with the Karemma.
And hookups with hot alien babes.

The TOS movies, well, most of them anyways, were about old men realizing how old they are. The TNG movies don't have core themes to them. Generations was strictly Kirk & Picard must team up and it didn't matter how it happened. First Contact was two stories smushed together. Insurrection is literally about the Fountain of Youth. Nemesis is the Shinzon movie.

According to the DS9 technical manual Operation: Return (battle to retake DS9) was the single costliest in Federation history up to that point. This is in terms of ship losses only. Since the canonicity of the manuals are kind of iffy. You can get a rough number from the "Sacrifice of Angels" episode when Bashir says 200 ships broke through the enemy lines which is way less than the 627 that engages the Dominion fleet. I really need to get that manual some time I used to read that in Barnes and Noble all the time when it came out.
