Culture YouTube releases it's YouTube Rewind for 2018

Usually these things are masturbatory self-indulgences for the YT community featuring a lot of e-celebs. They start off with PewDiePie declaring "YEAR REWIND" and then showing some dumb shit for the fans.

This one

• Starts with Will Smith (who isn't a YouTuber).
• Has Ninja (who isn't a YouTuber).
• A Fortnite gag.
• No PDP because he said the word NIGGER.
• A bunch of people no one cares about.
• An entire two minute long scene celebrating diversity, women, and non-whites.
• Locked chat with the people in the video watching it together and live commenting with the most cringe inducing shit I've ever fucking seen.

Currently it's at about 70% dislikes and sinking. The comments are tearing it to shit. For all the talk of diversity, one commenter from Brasil pointed out that there are no Brazilian YouTubers present. Sorry menino, you faggots don't wear hijabs and don't hate Trump enough. Better luck in 2019.

So long as enough garbage surrounded you, the powers would be discouraged from pursuing you because there would always be a richer target nearby.

That was a few years ago. It's possible that YouTube makes a profit nowadays - at least some analysts believe so (Google doesn't disclose the revenue).

I suspect there's some decent licensing revenue being made by having youtube apps available on consoles and built into alot of flatscreen smart TVs nowadays, but I don't have any proof.

As someone who usually doesn't care about the whole we, us, community bullshit, watching all the fan remakes actually did shake me a bit.

I understand why gamers and memes don't make up a proportionally large amount of Rewind (ie 95%), because that'd be kinda cringe, but the sheer disregard for 'us' is the real issue. You literally have YouTube by categories; invite the top 5 of each to a meeting and let the rational people duke it out and explain why and who should be included. Google 'YouTube' and sort by articles with the most views.

If a fucking sub-5m shitposter can list all the highlights of a year in a few minutes, so should a bunch of PoC being paid in minority benefits be able.

I legit didn't even know who he was until just a couple years ago, despite using Youtube for well over 10 years now. It's easier than you think.

My trick is simply never touching the 'trending' button and only watching what interests me personally.

The embarrassing thing is how easy this should have been to pull off given their budget and the recent narrative.

Spoiler: I didn't go to school for this but I could still write a scene-by-scene if I needed to.

Leverage the Pewdiepie vs T-Series bullshit to set up a hammy fictional war with music, art, and corporate youtubers set against blog, commentary, and videogames youtubers. Borrow youtube original music creators to do a neat soundtrack, throw in a couple semi-relevant memes here and there, and end on a high note with the two sides joining to welcome the new year, reflect on good times/charity efforts, etc..
Setting it up like this also helps diffuse controversy, get a few people who e-hate eachother to shake hands and demonstrate that it's mostly an act, that everyone can drop the petty extreme internet drama for real moments, and that Youtube can be a unifying platform.

It's not "hate" so much as just naked indifference, at least in the case of animators. They generally aren't big revenue earners, they take weeks to put out a 5 minute-ish video and consequently don't run a lot of ads. Meanwhile, video game lets players and personality vloggers can churn out daily (at least) videos that are all 15+ minutes and can have multiple adrolls run.

YouTube just doesn't really think all that much about people who aren't helping them pay the bills, which is why two Late Night hosts were in Rewind this year despite not being part of the YouTube creative community.
