Culture YouTube releases it's YouTube Rewind for 2018

  • Iniciador del tema Iniciador del tema Null
  • Fecha de inicio Fecha de inicio
Usually these things are masturbatory self-indulgences for the YT community featuring a lot of e-celebs. They start off with PewDiePie declaring "YEAR REWIND" and then showing some dumb shit for the fans.

This one
  • Starts with Will Smith (who isn't a YouTuber).
  • Has Ninja (who isn't a YouTuber).
  • A Fortnite gag.
  • No PDP because he said the word NIGGER.
  • A bunch of people no one cares about.
  • An entire two minute long scene celebrating diversity, women, and non-whites.
  • Locked chat with the people in the video watching it together and live commenting with the most cringe inducing shit I've ever fucking seen.
Currently it's at about 70% dislikes and sinking. The comments are tearing it to shit. For all the talk of diversity, one commenter from Brasil pointed out that there are no Brazilian YouTubers present. Sorry menino, you faggots don't wear hijabs and don't hate Trump enough. Better luck in 2019.

Too bad there's no viable alternative to this shit. All the contenders like vidme and whatever went down, and I get the feeling stream me will too pretty soon

It's things like this that make me miss the 1.0 web. Decentralized websites without someone screeching for things to be taken down
Web 1.0 sites are increasingly a rare breed but I can only hope that the increasing problems with YouTube, Twitter, wikis run by degenerates (Bulbapedia, for instance), that individual, highly specialized sites will come into vogue again. We can only hope.

That was a few years ago. It's possible that YouTube makes a profit nowadays - at least some analysts believe so (Google doesn't disclose the revenue).
It seems improbable that advertisers are directly making YouTube profitable, and if they are, it's likely of secondary import behind how effectively the platform gathers and aggregates user data.

Why? Advertising has always been Google's bread and butter.
YouTube has always been a loss leader for the collection of user data, digital ad buys are generally comparatively inexpensive to other mediums (most notably Network/Cable TV.) Google has made their money more on selling data than selling advertising.

I think we're headed towards a decentralized shadow web in the future really, probably like modern BBS systems. Think onion sites but hosted on a user maintained meshnet. If the censorship and deplatforming accelerate, which does seems likely, it's not like the hardcore web Junkies are going to just stop using the internet. The thing about trying to control the internet is that people always find a way around your controls.

I know, I've been :optimistic: lately.

Even YouTube is running at a loss, with the only reason it being around is that it's owned by the piece of shit known as Google

When people state that Google Adsense is increasingly worthless, most do not realize just how worthless. A dollar of ads nets you about 3 cents worth of views, and that's not counting Google's ongoing problems with systemic ad fraud, ad blockers in general, and the fact that some ads are so broken that they aren't even viewable. This is a problem these idiots themselves created by poisoning the well to this degree, and no amount of people who have to view our ads on Google products is going to make up for the fact that the ad services mostly just make people less likely to use the product in question or have no effect on consumers whatsoever. Suffice to say, people are increasingly opting out of Adsense.

So what about Google's metadata shit? Well, sadly for them, that's not doing so great either. VPN services, blockers like AdNauseum and its many spin-offs, and other things now increasingly thwarting metadata collection, on top of cryptologists intentionally going out of their way to make said metadata as useless as humanly possible. It clearly scared someone, because Google effectively banned AdNauseum from working on Chrome back in 2017.

Bitchute has an awful name, but it's a really interesting concept I think will catch on. It uses an in-browser P2P system (that's seamlessly integrated so it's almost invisible to users) to help share video files between viewers. That has to really help with the bandwidth costs that make creating a video streaming platform prohibitively expensive.

The issue on the advertisers' end is that Google is one of only a few games in town, and arguably has the greatest reach among them. If you want to do digital advertising effectively, you basically have buy at least some Google advertising stock. (At least in elections, I can't speak more generally.) That said, people fucking with metadata in the long-term definitely does pose an existential threat to Google's bottom line.

Última edición:
Oh good, I was thinking that needed to be done. Since we can't take away all the information they have, we have to pollute it with garbage so there's no way of telling what's correct. Then their market analytics are fucking useless.
Many years ago Scott Adams foretold of a world in which the powers that be would be spying on you endlessly. He said the greatest defense would be to be boring. So long as enough garbage surrounded you, the powers would be discouraged from pursuing you because there would always be a richer target nearby.

I think it was in a book he wrote called the Dilbert Future, I wish I remember. But frankly I'm kind of glad I chose to ignore the people saying "why is a 10 year old interested in sarcastic office-place humor?"
