What are the most pretentious games ever made?

You can do meta well, just don't force the player into choices and then act like he had a choice or new extra context behind them that is only shown after the fact.

Also never moralize player for playing the game.
I liked LA Noire but hated when it did that. The chief demoting Phelps and ripping him a new one for cheating on his wife and mother of his children with a kraut jazz singer, and I'm sitting here like "it wasn't me, that was a cutscene!".

This is a very frequent sin of video game writing which boils down to "am I playing a character, or am I playing myself in a fictional world?". In the former case the plot can have the character be a dumbass as long as it fits the character, good example is Geralt or Joel. In the latter case the devs have a lot of freedom in what the character can do but can't railroad him to be an idiot without the player getting annoyed.

The Stanley Parable always stuck out as one of the most pretentious games I've ever seen. You just know the people writing the script were howling with laughter at how witty and smart their jokes were.

On top of that, it was clear that not everyone liked the style they went for and the devs SEETHED over it and made a DLC based around raging over mean steam reviews.
i never minded walking sim type games as a concept because that can exist as its own thing . Radiohead did something like that for one album that i thought was kind of cool for example. It free though.

A walking sim where you walk and listen to a redditor crack jokes, for 25$ like the Deluxe Edition of Stanley Parable was when it came out, no thanks

I'd heard people talk fondly about that game for years and then I see the Ross Scott review and wonder what the fuck everyone else was playing. It's just some nondescript 3rd-person shooter.
The game is great, the shooting sucks. If you've played Alan Wake 2-3 years ago you'll remember it as great, because you remember the good parts. If you, god forbid, play it again then you'll remember why it is so tedious.

American Nightmare is good though!

To name just a few games I find to be pretentious, starting with indies (apologies in advance for my spergouts):
  • Everything the game bakers made immediately after Furi.
  • That piece of shit celeste, or rather what celeste became for me after the devs came out to say madeline insecurity are about trooning out, instead of leaving them vague, already hated it for having cheats labeled as an accessibility feature anyway.
  • Gris. This is a game I wanter to like, the art direction is amazing and the soundtrack is also pretty, the issue is that its a glorified walking simulator about a character that feels vaguely sad about a statue breaking, say what you want about metaphors and shieets, but I can do the same about Hollow Knight, and that game actually has a plot.
  • I don't know you, but kena and Ori, to a lesser degree, always felt pretentious for me, kena in particular alwahs struck me as the avatar of indies, stunning graphics bit a nothingburger of a plot.
  • The upcoming title ususual june, alongside literally anything with the same aestethics, total nigger death.
Regard non-indies, I do have a few titles in mind:
  • Fallout 3: I don't know you, but I always hated the intro sequence where your whole life is shown like its something special, but what really pisses me off is that ending that forces you to either die or sacrifice another person while your radiation-immune companion stands right behind you the whole time but keep finding excuses to not go instead of you in the radioactive death chamber. That shit always felt retarded and contrived; you may try to tell me that the DLC fixed it, but you still get called a cunt and a foward in the end, because apparently self-sacrifice is actually based.
  • There's a whole thread about goodbye volcano high and ko_pe's next game (young sund) is cozyslop, I dunno if it fits there, but it won't stop me from namedropping them here.
  • Anything sony makes nowadays: OH BOY, I FUCKING LOVE CINEMATIC SLOP WHERE A CAMERA IS TAPED BEHIND YOUR SHOULDER, TOTALLY BETTER THAN HAVING ACTUAL FUCKING FUN!
  • The new doom games. All of them, can't stand the unnecessarily compelx and idiotic lore that is added in a vain attempt to convince you doomguy should be more than a man goung in a killing spree after the death of his pet.
  • Shenmue. Let's stop pretending fir a second, and instead admit that it has always been pretentious trash, I don't even care if it crawled so that Yakuza could run, the series is pretentious shit.
  • Mother 3. What the fuck even was that final boss fight, seriously? And the whole dragon nail plot? "oh man, there are these things that will destroy the world, let's activate them before the villain does the exact fucking same!"

I would put every crpg ever made in this category cause they seem to exude pretentiousness, the fake intellectualism so palpable especially in the more recent ones. There are a few like baldurs gate ii which are not cause they don't jerk off in the players face. Disco Elysium does though and everything from obsidian which doesn't have chris avellone.

I've come to the conclusion that the stanley parable is also very pretentious. It reminds me a lot of yiik in the way the narrator talks, that hipster redditor kinda shit. Nvm some guy already beat me to it

I wanted to put bioshock under here cause it kinda is but the gameplay is still extremely good for 2026 standards so it gets a pass. The kike shit is a bit pretentious but it's okay.

Even though I like the first two games, borderlands belongs here as well. All of them. I sorta found them funny when I was 17, the unicorn which shits rare loot was funny but it's cringe now.

One prediction from me is fromsoftware is heading in the pretentious direction. Uptil sekiro I genuinely liked their stuff. I've not played elden ring but from the looks of it, it looks stale and overdone, tailored specifically for the fanbase. And the way the fans act makes me think it's pretentious as fuck. The should probably shift gears if they want to avoid that branding.

Always thought that stanley parable was pretentious by design, less because it consider itself superior, and more because acting like that its actually part of the joke its trying to make.

Borderlans isn't pretentious, its just unfunny cringe, don't confuse the two.

I don't want to use "pretentious" to describe Elden Ring, "stretched and stale" are probably a better terms.
Pretentious is a difficult title to use for me at least, it means that a title isn't just self-indulging to an absurd degree, but also that it lacks the substance to back it up, something like New Vegas' Lonesome Road would perfectly fit for the definition, if Ulysses' final message wasn't in the game.
Regard Elden Ring, there's plenty of good bits scattered around the world, but also a lot of the same themes from previous FromSoftware titles, which had already been repeated at nausea.

Elden ring itself it's not pretentious but From soft fans are. They are one of the most pretentious people you will find online.
Nah, fromsoftware games, at this point in time are like Ghibli movies. And Ghibli movies, most of them at least, are pretentious to a degree given hayao Miyazaki and his shitty demeanour/attitude. The prototypical westaboo asian redditor. So fromsoftware games are to some degree pretentious, especially when they're designed to cater to the same fanbase. Gamer Miyazaki is not pretentious but I feel like he's audience captured to some extent and from in general has become audience captured. If they do a hideaki anno and fuck over that fanbase, id respect them more.

Reminds me of the retards who constantly shilled that the "good" ending of ACVI was that you and your NON-HUMAN """WIFE""" merging into an Armored Core was a good ending.
I don't even care if it crawled so that Yakuza could run
This aged so fucking poorly now that Yakuza is currently in the gutter after Kiwami 3 and whatever the fuck any game post-7 is.

Anytime a game ever advertises itself as something "you've never played before". I'm fairly positive out of the 500,000+ of estimated games ever made, that we've played something similar to whatever it is you've made. Don't oversell yourself by thinking your shit is anything original, you've just taken a bundle of ideas from other games and converted them into your converter as to how you want them to go.

I'm glad Comcept recently shut down, shows them for releasing Mighty No 9. Inafune was so full of himself, he believed his discounted Mega Man game, could be bred to be a franchise of its own.

No Man's Sky can still go fuck itself. I don't care how many reparations it has gone through, because the very first impression was what mattered the most.

The other part about No Man's Sky is with it's comeback, along with Final Fantasy XIV's and Cyberpunk 2077's, is that everyone likes to use the cope of "it can come back like how NMS did" whenever a game flops on launch. It's as if people don't realize that for every NMS/FF14/CP2077, there are many many more games that didn't make a comeback and then died out completely.

Thread tax: Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown has been a mess from the start of development and even still now, but the design from the start reeks of pretentiousness. The director openly stated that they wanted to make the next TDU game more like the Forza Horizon series, with the focus on car festivals and racing, and moving away from the lifestyle aspects that defined TDU, i.e. houses, car dealerships that you can walk around in, and rival characters in TDU2. And not surprisingly, the game has been a massive failure in almost everyway imaginable.
  • The car roster is very small compared to other racing games.
  • The game's servers are so fragile that the game was literally unplayable at launch and servers have issues whenever they have a free-to-play weekend.
  • The car economy is so fucked that it takes hours and hours of grinding to get one very expensive car.
  • Game performance and visuals are from 1-2 console eras ago,
  • Updates are slow and the devs seemingly refuse to release hotfixes to fix major bugs.
  • A lot of their communication is saying that "we'll fix X thing later".

The should probably shift gears if they want to avoid that branding.
Too late for that.

From used to make lots of weird, experimental nerd shit. That ended when after a few Souls' games, they went to make some pretentious looking VR game, and the Souls fanbase lost their shit. Then when the new Armoured Core was announced, I remember hearing the term "Souls, but with hangers instead of bonfires" thrown around, though if that was actually said, or just people like me mocking the fanbase, I'm not sure.

Googling "FromSoftware's next game" brings up a bunch of souls shit, and a tiny bit of armoured core.

It's hard to know how much From Software itself is pretentious or it's merely the fans who hyped the series so much to create the idea of overly complex world where there is none. What's for certain is that the minimalistic world building has worn out its welcome, and now it's used primarily by hacks to make every plotline a mystery box that rarely gets a good payoff.

May as well thread tax: The Hundred Line. Can't get more generically pretentious than having "100 endings for a game" that are almost universally all shit and waste your time.

I wanted to put bioshock under here cause it kinda is but the gameplay is still extremely good for 2026 standards so it gets a pass.
It's alright. It's not amazing but you can tell that it was made when developers still cared and it's impressive how much they didn't remove from the Looking Glass formula for the console audience.
It's 100% carried by the aesthetic though.
