Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

Kids are dumb and will drink things under sinks, wander onto other people's property, and they don't even understand property, and think dogs are friendly. If you have murder dogs it's your job to secure your property so nobody innocent is just wandering onto it. If not, you're on the hook legally for whatever happens, up to criminal homicide.

I forgot to note a few things, this guy was wearing fucking house slippers and walking two dogs with one leash rigged together haphazardly. When the dogs both flipped out, the leash broke and he lost his slippers, could only physically control one dog at a time. His dogs dragged the little dog and its owner into the street where they almost got hit by a car.

Captain Obvious here but the "the dog was barking at them so it's the dog's fault for provoking them" argument is really weak.

Yeah, barking can provoke another dog, it's one way they communicate, but it doesn't always provoke every dog out there. When I take my dog for a walk every day a slough of neighborhood dogs go nuts when we walk by, but he ignores them. He will sometimes return the barking but that's as far as it goes. Dogs bark at each other all the time and nothing happens. It appears the victim dog was a Pomeranian mix. Little dogs like that don't shut the fuck up, and you would think a larger dog would be intelligent enough to recognize "small dog. bark a lot. small bite. ignore."

Also, fleeing the scene of a dog attack caused by your dog should be a crime. Probably not as harsh as fleeing the scene of an accident or assault, but still a crime nonetheless. Heck, you could probably make the argument that leaving a vicious dog behind is more dangerous than fleeing a car accident, as the dog is now loose without an owner (or "pack member" that could possibly calm it) and could cause more damage. I'm pretty sure knowingly leaving a vicious dog unattended or leaving one without restraint (such as behind a fence or in a pen) is a crime in most places.
