The only redeeming factor that VLD has is that the showrunners actually liked and watched the original voltron growing up, unlike the shera reboot crew who had straight up disdain for the source (and also ended up pooning out). And having Steven Yeun as a main VA but thats counteracted by also having Bex Taylor.

You get the depressed loser (average romance consumer self inset), and then you get the upbeat cute girl who's really in love with him for basically no reason at all. They form a special bond (whilst literally playing what is effectively a first person shooter, I might add), he shares his tragic past, she hugs him, forgives him for everything, and tells him it's okay. It's almost formulaic, really.

Usually the self insert is some ineffectual nice guy archetype who's supposed to represent the downtrodden everyman, whereas Jax is just an asshole who pushes people away until it kills them and eventually him. So there's a clear subversion of the romance trope.
This is a recurring theme with TADC where Gooseworx takes great care not to follow known tropes, with the end result being such a confused mess that the show would have been better off sticking to the formula.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised. While, allegedly, Goosework might have watched a lot of anime in my opinion besides IHNMAIMS, most of this show's DNA is made of Steven universe.

I wish he had ripped Madoka Magica more instead as that is actually a masterclass in how to write characters with trauma. Needless to say Gen Urobochi is a far better writer than Rebecca Sugar, and her therapy sessions.

Minor Gay Nitpick:

Superman & Lois is a live-action tv show. You're probably talking about My Adventures With Superman, which has the exact same art style you're talking about.

Also, Voltron LG came out in 2016 while MAWS came out in 2023, so the former could never have aped the latter.

The fake Western Animu ™️ art style that is everywhere in shitty Netflix cartoons is a bastardized version of ATLA's art style, which was a genuinely good take on the anime style in a Western cartoon [it was able to merge Eastern/Western influences while still having it's own unique style, and thus looked amazing].

Unfortunately, modern Western Animu ™️ shows like DMC don't even come close to ATLA's greatness and instead just look like shitty anime animation but with every character having Wild Kratts eyes and facial proportions. [True And Honest anime characters are far more detailed, they're drawn like classical paintings]
