Pomni: New join in the circus, makes her confused, but interested. In real life, she likes urban exploring and taking pictures. Have the pictures be really mediocre and mid, make her not good at it at all and the characters be confused. She's also the picture taker, so she's never in any of the pictures and doesn't want others messing with the camera. Have her enjoy the adventures and take pictures of the environments, good times with the NPCs, and not understand why the others aren't doing the same thing. Then, when the Gummygoo situation happens, it breaks part of her trance, making her realize that nothing she has been doing really matters. I'd save this to be closer to the end of the series, though. Have Gummy be a friend she returns to often, then, when he walks through the portal to join them, Caine deletes him, and she loses her closest friend she's been relying on. She tries to show him their memories from the pictures, but Gummy is confused and can't remember at all. Maybe she gets frustrated and breaks her camera, then regrets it right after, as it was, in a way, her second closest friend.
Jax: In real life, he's homeless and thinks he may be a criminal. Have Jax never be in his room, he's always out and about wandering the circus and mapping out places of interest in the main body. He knows the best hiding places and areas of interest they can return to in a time of need, possibly even finding one small crevice of the circus that's out of Caine's range, going there to hide when he needs to be away. He and Pomni would often run into each other, him for wandering, her for exploring. His two best friends are dead because of his actions. He's scared of getting close to Pomni, despite her kindness, because bad things follow him. He was scanned into the circus with his worst living traits that he's stuck with. He tries to better himself when no one can see him, but is never successful because he can't fully evolve and move away from his initial coding in his folder. One approach could be to find the folders and run an experiment to see whether they can be edited at their core. Jax would volunteer as a tribute to see if it works. If it fails, he abstracts; if it's successful, they can fix abstracts. Later reveal the inner therapy session in his head. Have him work out his problems, but don't reveal it until later. The recoding isn't just a finger snap fix thing, he fights for it in his head and has to overcome what happened with his mother in his mind. Could be like a scene from the game "Observer" with how it goes through.
Ragatha: In real life, she has issues with her mother. Give her that low confidence that bad mothers often put in their daughters. We know she lived on a farm, maybe her dad was the farmer type, and her mom was a city girl? Ragatha was the only daughter in a sea of brothers. Her mom wants her to be "dolled up" and pretty, while the brothers focus on the hard work. Ragatha tries to help, but she gets yelled at because she needs to do ladies' work. She wants to play in the mud, wrangle horses, feed the hogs, etc., but her mother refuses and instead teaches her sewing, cleaning, cooking, and makeup. During the missions that take place, she shows instances of remembering her mother's instilled demands. During the fast food arc, make her really good at cooking, but visibly uncomfortable with it. With the guns, she is a really good shot, but lacks the confidence to be proud of it, half expecting her mother to come around the corner and scream at her for doing man's work. Have Pomni get part of her hat ripped up during an exploration. Ragatha offers to sew it up, giving them a calm moment together to bond, where she reveals a little bit of her past. Her arc could be learning that she's actually safe here from her mother, and she can do what she wants to do without fear of punishment. She's missing an eye because she accidentally poked her eye with eyeliner while crying and making it hurt (but not losing it IRL). Then, when she's scanned in, she's missing it. When they get editing powers at the end, she gets her eye back, representing how she can see herself and the world around her in a new light.
Gangle: In real life, Gangle has low confidence, which is very visible, and wants to be an artist. Have Gangle paint her own masks and make them out of paper plates in the beginning. She works in fast food and maybe draws on the backs of those plates to pass the time. Make them crude but heartfelt. In the circus, her plates get washed out with fluids, so maybe instead of knocking her over, she gets dropped in water tanks (like the circus game), slips in water, etc. Could also be a play on artists smelling bad for not showering, which also hurts her confidence. Her room is filled with art she has made, drawings on the wall, and custom furniture, making her crafty. She is artistic and very capable. Maybe she's mediocre at drawing, but really good at crafts? When Pomni's camera breaks, she shyly offers to draw/paint what Pomni wants memories of. It makes her more exclusive to the "important" moments. Instead of taking pictures of anything and everything, she learns to pay attention to things as a whole. Gangle teaches her a few tricks about the rule of thirds and the like, giving them a bonding moment. Pomni helps her gain confidence and practice in painting, and they talk during it. Then, when they get editing powers at the end, Gangle is the one to redesign the circus, taking everyone's ideas and combining them into what they all want.
Zooble: In real life, she has body dysmorphia, she's fat and hates herself (I hate trannies, so I'm not going that route 42%). She owns a bar as well. In the series, make her good at listening to people and give her the personality of a bartender. She knows everyone's secrets and is the least trusting because of it. She thinks outside the box from everyone else because she's more tactical and intelligent due to being able to open and maintain a business IRL. She hates her body; it falls apart when she most needs it, limiting her use to the missions and frustrating her. She knows she could do the best, but does the worst because she's at a physical disadvantage. Gangle eventually offers to help, since she's artistic, and chooses parts from the toy box to rebuild Zooble with, but also takes things from the environment as well, maybe something Jax or Pomni found and includes that, too. Maybe with her joints always falling off, they find rubber bands and sticks and make a splint out of it with Kinger's help. Gangle is creative, Kinger is good at making things, Jax is good at finding useful things, Ragatha is good at fixing things, and Pomni is good at capturing the happy things. Gangle draws up the design, Jax finds the pieces, Kinger makes it functional, Ragatha sews up the pattern to go over it and make it pretty, Pomni captures everyone working together. Zooble learns to trust the cast and get involved. Once she has a body she's happy with, she offers to share a plan she made that could get them all out after she's confident it could work. She and Gangle became close because Gangle's idea is what made her comfortable for the first time in years. She gives Gangle a real plate from her bar to paint on, giving her the pretty reinforced porcelain plate to paint when SHE feels comfortable to. A mutual exchange.
Kinger: In real life, he's a married man who works as a programmer. In the circus, after losing his wife, he becomes disoriented and lost. Maybe he goes through grief when she abstracts, but doesn't know how to handle it. He is stuck in the denial stage. He sets up the tea table for two and silently waits for hours at a time for Queenie to show up, but she never does. His scan is small; he can't process death very well because he was scanned in knowing he's married. Insanity at its origin is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result that never comes. As time goes on, he slowly loses his mind. He begins to forget why he would set the table for two; he is doing it out of habit now. Light is overstimulating for his broken mind; the excessive colors and exaggerated movement make it so that he can't think straight. He can only think when it's quiet and dark. Maybe Jax accidentally shows Pomni his out-of-bounds area, and she can't keep the secret. She brings Kinger there, thinking he'll find it cool, only for the complete silence and blank area to put him at ease. That's where he can truly talk and be himself again. This is where we learn the truth. Kinger would be good at building or organizing things due to being the "King" or "Lead Programmer". He can coordinate everyone together. He knows the game at its core and with Jax knowing everything that's changed, they can make a detailed map and with Zooble on board, they can make the plan for Caine's office. At the end of the series, if the recoding on Jax works and it removes his negative scans, he can revert all the abstractions and rebuild the circus.
End of the series would be Jax wearing the bow, remeeting with Ribbit shyly, where they hug it out. The tender moment is broken by Kaufmo. Scratch comes back and greets Kinger again, "I missed you, buddy!" Queenie comes back, and she and Kinger will be at the tea table, catching up for the first time in ages. Scratch was maybe the PC builder in IRL, he fixes Pomni's camera.
Gangle showed Pomni how to take good pictures. Ragatha now has two bright and happy eyes, Jax has the bow on his head, and he's sitting with his arms around Ribbit and Kaufmo, finally able to enjoy life for the first time. Queenie and Kinger are at the table, Zooble is with Gangle, both of them with bodies they're happier with, and Gangle has her nice painted plate. Pomni goes to take the picture, but Scratch stops her, revealing that he added a timer to the camera. For the first time, Pomni enters the picture frame. There's a slow cycle between the cast as it counts down, and ends with them all happy and in the new circus, redesigned to be more homey. Pomni is awkward in the photo, doing the silly smile she did at the beginning of the series.
Everything should have a reason for happening. Everything should be able to tie together to make a comprehensive narrative. A lot of these parts play into each other because that's what strong, tight-knit writing should do. This would make for a strong first draft. Imagine what a week of refining this core concept could result in. Have the characters interact proactively instead of just talking. Ragatha and Pomni sitting together as Pomni's hat is fixed, for example, it would give a moment for them to learn about Ragatha's past, set up her eye, reveal she's good at sewing (for Zooble), and can work with what she's got. Jax wanders, finds things, makes a mental note of interesting things, can update Kinger on what the current circus looks like, Gangle can draw it, Kinger can mess with its code, etc. What's the point in giving the cast all these hobbies and the like if they don't use them? In the series, was there ever an actual point where Gangle's art was useful?
Sigh.
Another long ass reply.
