The Mirage-era TMNT is something where everyone tells you it's super edgy, gritty and "the turtles are all just interchangeably angry one-note characters with no separate personalities" then you read them and you get sequences like "Christmas special where Michaelangelo fools around in a toy store and helps orphans".

As for the trailer, this movie already looks like a downgrade of the Spiderverse ("Spiderverse didn't start the look" yeah it didn't but it's clear what inspired this). The 2012 TMNT show already showed how dark TMNT colors can still be appealing without splashing colors of excrement and urine everywhere.

Just because your animated film is about mutant turtles who live in the sewers and roam about the crime-ridden streets at night doesn't mean you're supposed to make it look as miserable as actual neighborhoods full of crackhouses and stripped-down derelict buildings.

I swear that Eastman designed her in the comics to resemble his then wife Julie Strain? Never got back into the franchise when they rebooted the movies, but loved the arcade games. RIP redhead April.

I know it's probably not true but I would like to imagine that April design here is a way of the animators to take revenge on people rising a stink about it in Rise.
Once again probably not true because different studios and what not but I know that the animation community is still butthurt because flashy anime fights hour starring the turtles failed really hard.
 
Personally I’m more tired of April O'Neil being made a teen once again than her being race swapped.

The story of her "original intended race" in the comics is a mess so she could be whatever, but that doesn't change that they had to make her look like that because they're horrified of having non-hideous female characters in cartoons for the youths or even in adult cartoons. Even if this new April O'Neil design were white, the design would still scream "gotta make women realisitc and by that we mean ugly to not be sexist".
 
Was Rise of the TMNT any good? last one I watched was the 2012 cgi show, and I stopped watching it once they went to space.
