I saw a fifteen-second commercial for this movie that literally used two separate quotes from a site I’ve never heard of called “The Nerds Of Color” and dismissed it on the spot.

...Was a bitch to find again, though, as it turns out there’s like 30 separate ads for it all with different quotes.

I can only read that as the author/movie trying to say “Mental illness isn’t a problem, he’d be fine if we didn’t have all these nazis around to radicalize him!” And that’s... a really fucking bad take.

At this point is there really a need for professional film critics? We live in an age where fifty thousand people can put their own reviews online or make a video about the film and do it with 100% less pretentiousness in their writing/explaining and without being bought out by the big companies.

There is a place for film critics, but they have to be actually interested in the art/entertainment itself, and they can't be so steeped in delusion that they become incapable of accurately judging the quality of a film.

Video games journalists, on the other hand, are entirely superfluous now that you can watch a YouTube video or check Steam reviews.

I don't exactly disagree, but that craft can become worthless if it's buried under too many layers of shit. And since "everything is political" to these hallucinating nuts, much of their craft has lost its value.

And again, I don't think the accusation of "valuable craft" applies to video games journalists. Virtually none of them ever do anything that could be described as actual journalism. They are merely self-glorified enthusiast press, and they're becoming increasingly bad at that as they chase recognition of their real-world value in their (rightfully) dying profession.

While it sounds like something that Disney would do, it's unverifiable at the moment. What I do maintain however, is that the media is now a grossly irresponsible entity that is run by people who couldn't be apolitical or truthful to save their lives. They are bloggers and behave as such, which is a far cry from the public service that the news was previously meant to be.

Guess I'm watching this film this weekend. Hopefully it lives up to the audience rave reviews. At this point is there really a need for professional film critics? They do an excellent job with Arthur's descent into insanity.

Spoiler: Plot stuff

Arthur is a fuckup, and not one of his own making. He was adopted by an insane woman who relentlessly abused him, and he locked away the memories in order to cope. He didn't even know he was adopted; his mother was under the delusion that she had had an affair with Thomas Wayne and Arthur was his illegimate son.

His repressed childhood trauma manifested as a score of mental illnesses, for which he was receiving treatment -- until Gotham City cut the funding to the social programs that were trying to help him. Still, he tries to get help, only to be shut down at every turn. He loses his job as a shitty clown, he gets attacked by a group of rich thugs and kills them while in clown makeup, and this leads to him becoming a figurehead for the city's downtrodden -- the public doesn't know who the killer was, but the underclasses regard him as an "eat the rich"-type vigilante and begin to rise up. Meanwhile, Arthur's attempts at stand-up comedy are so godawful that he's invited onto Gotham's equivalent of The Tonight Show, where the host mocks him and his mental condition until Arthur confesses to the murders and kills the host in a rage on live TV, sparking riots that consume the city.

There's a lot more to the story than that, but those are the highlights.

Most of the big kills legitimately make a sick amount of sense and you fully understand his motivations for doing them, he isn’t just suddenly a spree killer out of nowhere.
