I've seen no less than five new critic reviews shit all over this movie in the past hour. Meanwhile, if you check twitter, the word "masterpiece" has been used more times than I can count on all fingers and toes. If a place as left-leaning as twitter says the movie is great, it's a good sign the critics need to stop and admit defeat. This monster is going to break records.

Well, here's kind of the thing with these review firms: They already are very well aware that just about everyone with two brain cells to rub together already hates and distrusts them, but they know how to use that hatred and distrust towards them to their advantage via reverse psychology marketing. We've seen this before in the slasher horror films of the 70s and 80s, so expect them for the marketing people to come out in the next 30-40 years from now with the tagline of "The Movie THEY Didn't Want You To See" for this like what they did with stuff like Cannibal Holocaust and others.
 
I just saw the box office news and LOL. Libtards and progressives would rather by "ironic" about this move and cover their ears chanting "sexist racist homophobic bigot!" than simply accept people don't want to buy what they offer because it's mediocre. It ain't that hard.
 
You know, I wasn't going to see this... But the absolutely retarded way the media are treating it guaranteed I would be seeing it. Got my ticket bought, and will be watching it on a fancy reclining chair.

Just came back from watching the movie. Holy shit. You will not be disappointed. I hope Joaquin doesn't kill himself like Heath. Hes performance was so good I worry about he's well-being.
 
I really liked it, very dark as it should be, but there's some black comedy mixed in. Joaquin was obviously fantastic. I think he only says the word 'society' once at the end of the film but I cracked a smile when he did.

They should have left the parentage story more ambiguous. I liked it better when we weren't sure if his mother was telling the truth or not, but the photo of the mother with "I love your smile -T. W." written on the back basically confirms she was being honest.
 
I'm very happy to hear that a lot of you guys liked the film. Honestly, with how shit most film critics have become, this site has become one of my most trusted sources for film recommendations.

Either way, I'm hoping to see this on Tuesday when tickets are cheap, hopefully with a friend.

EDIT: I’m definitely seeing it Tuesday with my friend.

Just noticed, there's some scenes in the trailer and movieblob's review (can't pin down the source) which didn't happen in the movie (or I missed)

I really can't wait for the director's cut release, according to Joaquin around 30 minutes were edited out from the final runtime.

Also kudos to the trailer for not giving away the entire fucking plot (although there are some big spoilers if you know where to look)
 
Seeing all this bullshit controversy over the new Joker movie made me think it was some sort of guerilla marketing on the part of Warner Brothers.

Sort of a "generate free publicity via astroturfed controversy" deal, but recently someone said in another thread that it may have been Disney doing some form of "counter-marketing" by weaponizing the infamously woke MCU fanbase in an attempt to sink the film. I wouldn't put it past them to bribe critics to try and review bomb the movie either, especially with how pretentiously woke most critics in the 2010's are to begin with.

I think what won me over to this argument is Martin Scorsese calling out Disney for how shitty and terrible the MCU really is, and the guys who made the new Joker movie directly cited Scorsese as their main inspiration.

IIRC, one of them outright said that Joker is a serious movie disguised as a capeshit movie. It's honestly a brilliant move to not only get the film greenlit by a major studio but also get masses to watch it in droves.

I've not seen it yet, but I definitely will do so. I honestly hope that a successful Joker combined with an MCU film tanking at the box office will be enough to finally kill capeshit.

At this point, I haven't seen any compelling evidence that Disney is bribing critics. I think the more simple, and more likely, explanation is that like you said, most film critics these days are insufferably woke and judge films more on how well they flatter their political beliefs rather than the actual craft, and even then it's mostly Anglosphere critics.
 
I saw the movie this morning after looking forward to it from the time I saw the teaser trailer like 6 months ago. I could tell right off the bat it was going to be something special, and I say this as someone who really can't stand 'cape shit'. I was not disappointed. I think this movie blows the minds of blue checkmark types because it doesn't tell you what to think. It doesn't force-feed you the 'good guy' and 'bad guy', it doesn't draw overt parallels between specific characters in the movie and political figures in real life. There are a million different layers to this movie and as many angles to view it from.

The main debate seems to be whether Arthur Fleck is supposed to be ANTIFA or is he supposed to be a school shooter incel. I think, in a way, he's actually Donald Trump. Arthur was scapegoated by the 'establishment'. They kept saying to him things like,"You did this, you caused this [the chaos and unrest]", when really the anger and resentment that the ordinary citizens of Gotham felt had always been there. It didn't start with Arthur and it doesn't end with Arthur. He just gave the people an icon to rally around after he shot the Wall Street guys. The protesters were just using that symbol of the clown to represent what they were already feeling, and rather than take responsibility for their roles in getting the city into the bad condition it was in [which caused people to feel that way], the elites blame Arthur, because it's easy. It reminded me of the way the MSM, Hollywood, etc. have acted about Donald Trump, like populism begins and ends with him, like he invented it and nobody was already feeling this way before he came along (which is wrong, and dumb, of course).


No armed guards or cops at my theater, and no Gamer Uprisings. I was surprised to see quite a few 65+ y/o white-haired people coming to see it alone, too.

Ummm.... I'm sorry but In the movie the Joker basically inspires ANTIFA to burn Gotham eat the rich blah blah and create Batman. Yes I know they have to fearmonger about the evil soldiers of I.N.C.E.L. but come on

EDIT: As for the movie itself god damn that was good. They really play around with what's real and what's in Arthur's head. Some of it was obviously delusion. I honestly thought they were gonna pull "Joker and Batman are illegitimate half bros!" And was getting disappointed at it. And then the reveals about his mom. 10/10 gamers = risen up

I'm now walking home after watching Joker. Im taking the long way back for... reasons that make sense to me, but holy shit that was a movie I'm glad I gave my money to. I also don't regret at all getting drunk before watching this movie. If you can, (without driving) DO IT. More to come.
