I’m just sick of characters being described as “little chaos gremlins” or “tiny menace goblins” or whatever quirkchungus milennial permutation you want to go with. It’s just embarrassing to read and it’s so over utilized.

A lot of female leads in recent online animation read like author's "pets". You can tell that they were made to be the creator's ideal waifu OC first before considering any kind of arc she would go through in a story.
I see this hyperactive goth loli archetype all the time

I've noticed this phenomenon with a lot of OCs. It's why you build a character around a story and not the other way around.
It also might explain why Uzi has no actual character arc in the series either because when you design a character who is your "Perfect waifu" obviously she doesn't need to change or have character development because she's already perfect!
???
I didn't get any loli vibes from her at all. If anything I'd say she's just generic goth girl OC #5938. Like actually that's exactly what she is. It's also kind of disturbing when you realize, much like who troons model themselves, after the OC is almost always the girl they wanted to fuck in highschool or something.
Makes me wonder how much using Unreal Slopgen was slowing down production. They'll probably never say out loud but I have to imagine they ran into a lot of problems if it took them 2 fucking years to rig one single character who honestly isn't even that complex.
The mouths of the drones and Jax's removable face were among the many things that UE couldn't really handle. When they were making MD, they had a hard time importing the animation from Maya to UE due to UE often messing up the drones' mouths, making them look like Kermit the Frog.
I can imagine how much pain in the ass was making the stretchy face that Cyn/Tessa and Jax have, considering they had to actively make workarounds so UE wouldn't shit itself during production.

Also, going through all the posts about how using Unreal Engine caused all kinds of issues has convinced me to not touch UE in any shape or form in the future (I do 3D stuff like once or twice a year).

Unreal is for making games, not animations. (And even then I'd argue there are better choices.)
So unless you're making a game there's really no reason to use it. Glitch only uses it due to some retarded deal with Epic from my understanding.

I know that UE is primarily a game engine, but it has been impossible for me to not notice how it's getting pushed in the animation sphere. I tend to see UE getting shilled for its faster rendering speed compared to other software, but it also seems to be worse at doing photorealistic and stylized rendering. There's a good reason for why generally almost everything made with UE tends to look the same.

It's also used in live action productions, usually in tandem with the virtual set TV wall thingy.
To my understanding it allows for levels of pixel fucking never known before since UE5 renders in real time.

I couldn't agree more. Not just in animation but in a majority of media I've seen. Whenever a woman is written they're treated with multi-layered gloves. Women cannot be wrong, cannot be the target of slapstick, or do something as being ironically stupid. Because of this we're served "strong female protagonists", or women whose only purpose is to fix the idiot guy deuteragonists.
But that's not to say good female characters don't exist! Just that there's a great shortage of them, and the pool shrinks as the years go by.
You could ESPECIALLY see this in SMG4 as well. Meggy Spletzer worked because she was female yet still rowdy enough to have her own degeneracies like the rest of the SMG4 cast.
But then of course after the Anime Arc she had to turn human and thus every bit of edge was sanded off of her.
She went from enjoyable to unbearable in minutes. You don't know how uninterested I was when the only thing that would come out of her mouth was "I miss desti ". SMG4 made an entire gay mini-arc of her finding her purpose because she isn't an inkling and thus couldn't participate in Turf Wars anymore. The real answer was that she had ZERO purpose other than to scold mario for doing stupid shit. The show would've been better if she just fucking died.
And given that almost every protagonist in the Glitch collection is a female, you can start to see a pattern in how they are written.

Another reason Meggy initially worked is because she was based on something pre-existing. She was an Inkling from Splatoon, so there was a clear concept of how her character should act.
Meggy was the first character who wasn't a parody, since she behaved exactly like the Inklings in the Splatoon canon: she was energetic, competitive, just a normal, ordinary Inkling. She was not like the rest of the cast of the time, who were parodies of existing characters. (Mario is dumb, Teletubbies are evil, etc). Even if you compare it to the early OC characters like Bob, Fishy Boopkins, or even the guards, Chris and Swagmaster69, they were all parodies of something pre-existing (A Garo from Majora's Mask, a Spike from Mario, and guards from Goldeneye 007). Despite this, Meggy still felt part of the SMG4 universe simply because she was based on something pre-existing.
Then came 2018 and the decline of SMG4 officially began...
Saiko Bichitaru was the first fully OC on the show, and at the time she felt very out of place on the show. A girl of indeterminate age who escaped from a dating sim game and only speaks in random Japanese sentences. She wasn't funny, she wasn't likeable, she was simply a villain who turns good after a few appearances and, for no particular reason, becomes part of the main cast. Her character felt so forced, I bet the reason she has fans is because people find her hot and sexy. It's clear this is when Kevin started adding weeaboo shit to SMG4. Seriously, the videogame she escaped from is literally called KEVIN'S SCHOOL. It might have been a funny nod to the people behind the scenes back in 2018, but in hindsight, it's not subtle at all, knowing this was the direction Kevin was taking SMG4, and it doesn't help that Fishy Boopkins, Kevin's favorite character whom he also voices, had a crush on her. And just as you said, she was never wrong, she was never ridiculed, nor did anything that was ironically stupid.
(LOL, MARIO IS DOING A MAKING A SILLY FACE AND SAIKO PUNCHES HIM FOR THAT, HA, HA, DEFINITELY THE PINNACLE OF COMEDY )
Not even a year later, just a few months after Saiko's debut, we already have another dreadful addition to the cast...
The blue bitch girl herself, the cyborg gamer girl waifu, the female Luigi (even thought they share nothing in common other than being shy), the star of Glitch Productions' first show...
It's Tari!!!
Tari is shit. No, seriously, her character simply sucks. Her character is that she's an action girl, but she's shy, she loves rubber ducks and... that's about it. Tari is such a nothing character, I fucking hate that they made her a main character. In any other series, Tari would be the type of character who would only appear once or twice, and never again. And yet, at one point, the show deemed it necessary to include her in every possible scene, even if she contributed absolutely nothing. Like Meggy and Saiko, she had no slapstick, no funny faces, no embarrassing moments, and the vast majority of her fans only love her because her design makes their PP rock hard.
The main reason she's in SMG4 is that she was essentially a walking advertisement for Meta Runner, which became very evident as they then dedicated entire episodes to promoting Meta Runner. But even after Meta Runner ended, Tari was still there, though not as frequently as before. It's pretty clear the writers didn't know what to do with her (in fact, I don't remember it very well, but there was a post-Meta Runner episode where they acknowledge that Tari doesn't appear as often as she used to), but it's very likely that Luke and Kevin mandated them to keep her, which is probably why she still occasionally appears in Glitch crossovers, even though they neglect Meta Runner after the series ended.
I have a theory, but I think the reason Tari keeps appearing even though Glitch refuses to acknowledge Meta Runner is for sentimental reasons. Tari was originally designed by Tish Lerdwichagul, Luke and Kevin's younger sister.
Not much is known about her personal life, to the point that the only available photo of her is a picture of her as a baby.
Even if the intention is good, it doesn't change the fact that Tari is still a piece of shit.
There's one last big load of shit I have to mention, because Kevin thought the SMG4 Girl Trio needed to be a Quartet. Who asked for that? Nobody, but Glitch Productions wants to give you more Rule 34 material.
The Fucking Fruit. I already gave my thoughts on why I FUCKING HATE Melony in the Digital Circus thread:
I'll be honest, I FUCKING HATE Melony. In fact, out of all the waifus introduced in Modern SMG4, she's the one I hate the most, because she feels like a fetish character. Well, not a malicious fetish, but she still gives the impression that she was specifically designed to be that way.
It's obvious that Luke and Kevin are proud weeaboos, especially Kevin. While Saiko was already the animesque character in the cast, she was more of a shallow attempt at a yandere-turned-good character in the series, and that was about it. Melony, however, felt like a blatant example of anime fanservice, which is very out of place in SMG4. Her character consists of the fact that viewers look at her and say "Awww, look at this cute and adorable kawaii memeable anime grill waifu UwU", and that she also happens to be very strong and powerful. It doesn't help that she's another character who almost never has slapstick or embarrassing moments, the fact that she's supposed to be taken dead seriously, and her damn baby anime waifu voice that tries too hard to sound cute.
Even worse, around 2021, the show became VERY OBSESSED with her, making her a very important character in the The SMG4 Cosmology Lore saga
By the way, they gave her the same treatment as Meggy: they killed off an important character for her and gave her way too much screen time for supposed "character development" that ultimately went nowhere. All that was missing was a Melony spin-off.
We cannot talk about Melony without talking about her romantic relationship with Axol. Honestly, I never understand why they kept Axol as a main character, he was just a minor antagonist in the Anime Arc that turns good. Once the Anime arc ended, his character arc was complete, there was no reason for him to still be around Mario and the rest. I feel that they only made Melony and Axol a couple because they really needed to give him something to do, although... There was a theory that Axol was Kevin's self-insert, though there was no evidence to support this other than Kevin being Axol's VA. Some insist that the reason Axol was permanently killed off was to avoid the unfortunate implication that Kevin was in love with Melony, and used Axol as a stand-in for that purpose.
Regardless of whether this theory is true or not, they insisted so much on marketing their romance that at one point the channel banner looked like this.
Same show where Mario raped Toad...
And they released this piece of merch, which was a notebook containing a short official SMG4 manga starring Melony and Axol.

Don't forget that THIS is what kicks the plot of Sunset Paradise. Meggy was so fucking depressed about having no purpose in her life that her friends (including Mario, for no apparent reason) decided she should go on vacation and bought her a ticket to Port Aurora, where Sunset Paradise takes place.
Yes, Sunset Paradise is canon to SMG4. And just as quickly as she left, she quickly returned to the show.
I was about to post that video here, but you did it first.
Would you believe me if I told you this episode is so bad that even some Modern SMG4 stans hate it? Seriously, this episode is that bad.
By the way, I hate that Peach only appears at the beginning and isn't really part of the plot. I never understood why Modern SMG4 hated Peach and Toad so much and avoided using them at all costs, and it can't be because of copyright, because Mario is still marketed as the protagonist. I bet they would have been killed off permanently in the "It's Gotta Be Perfect" movie if it weren't for the backlash it would have caused, not to mention the fact that they wouldn't have been able to do nostalgia pandering later on if they had died permanently. Peach may have been a bitch, but at least she was funny, unlike the waifu quartet.
So you're telling me, they named her "Saiko" and the joke wasn't that she's a psycho? Come on, it was right there!
I can't really say much sadly as I never really watched SMG4 besides the odd video or two when I was younger probably, or meme clips so I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject unfortunately, or perhaps thankfully depending on your perspective.
She was a psycho a first, more specifically a yandere. Furthermore, her last name, Bichitaru, sounds similar to the word "bitch". Over the years, her psychopathic personality softened, and she essentially became a short-tempered anti-hero.
This was the video that caused me to stop watching SMG4 altogether. You forgot the best part. Despite all her friends trying to help her try to fit in somewhere, she lashes out at all of them for seemingly no reason and comes off a huge cunt. And it's not even the first time she lashes out at her friends. SMG4 was funny when it was a bunch of random dumb skits. The crybaby OC drama shit was the final nail in the coffin. I couldn't have been happier when it all finally ended.

I can somewhat relate to that feeling if nothing else. Around the time I stopped watching Red Vs Blue more or less was when the show started being gay and trying to have a serious plotline that wasn't just them fucking around. Oh yeah, I guess Dragon Ball Z abridged also kind of started doing that too.
Not really sure why retards keep thinking that switching genres from comedy to whatever else is a good idea when comedy is what they're supposed to be known for.

I have only really watched TADC , but honestly despite them trying to push female characters, GLITCH, a multimillion dollar company, has some of the blandest female character design I have ever seen.
The girl SMG4 quartert looks like extremely generic anime girls. Not even particularly good ones. I have seen better in Deviant art. Boring inkling humanization, Generic anime girl with pink hair blue peach (the hair stand resembles her crown), and forgettable legend of Zelda looking OC.
Basically generic characters nobody would care if they didn't belong to a Nintendo parody
At least Murder Drones has the excuse they are robots and, TADC in that they lost their real bodies and follow a generic toy/circus theme.
I love that the in universe explanation for how it is that Meggy turned into a human is that she had all of her ink drained. SMG4 does acknowledge that Meggy dies if she tries to swim, but doesn't realize the in-game explanation behind that is because inkling bodies are made up of mostly ink, and therefore, they dissolve when they're in water. This was at the time of Splatoon 2, so it was generally accepted that if an inkling lost their ink, they would NOT turn into a waifu, they'd just die.
And then Splatoon 3 came around and straight up confirmed that if an inkling had all their ink drained, they'd be permanently stuck in their squid form. SMG4 somehow predicted the exact opposite outcome of what happens if an inkling gets drained.
Also, I can't believe you forgot to mention the worst thing that Meggy was ever involved in
For those out of the loop, there were occasionally jokes where Meggy would shrink down into "Leggy". As Leggy, she would speak in annoyingly high pitched squeals, and somehow be even LESS of a character than Meggy was. Some bastard on the SMG4 team thought it was a good idea to have Leggy be story relevant, and so, she started to develop a relationship with Mr. Puzzles, a villain who previously tortured Meggy so badly she gained PTSD.
Aside from the obvious merch pull, I can't help but feel like having Meggy/Leggy be in a relationship with Puzzles was a ploy to ape Pomni and Caine, without any actual knowledge of what Goose was planning with Digital Circus.
