Well you can have jaded Kara, realistically being in Clark’s shadow would do nothing but worsen her state of mind post-Krypton.That would be ideal, and in fact I would argue, that's the character at her best— Teenage girl finding her way.
I think the reason they haven't done that is that current climate is they just can't fathom a strong female character being inspired by a guy. No, she has to be a girl boss.
CW made her a basically Clark in a skirt, and even the Superhero girls adaptation had to change the dynamic and make Superman the asshole narcissist sibling/cousin. By the trailers Gunn seems to be aiming at "she is the realist" , to naive Clark.
The idea that a woman could be inspired by a man, even if that man is Superman, it's like poison to this people. As it was degrading her instead of making him relatable and strong in her own way.
Dead world, dead family, failed duty to protect her cousin and now, after arriving late. He’s the champion of the new world, in his thirties and now she’s gonna be seen as the “other Kryptonian” and won’t ever be at his level, both physical strength-wise (he matured under a yellow sun) or reputation-wise.
But the alcoholic slut who’s needlessly mean to her cousin and for some reason has taken the man’s dog (movie Krypto is a rodent breed and a mutt), that’s very funny in an unintentional way from Tom King and Gunn. That’s what they think is an empowered woman.
In Superman/Batman, Kara arriving was met with suspicion and the Trinity all warring over her. Clark is the only one who blindly believed in his cousin and in one of the best Superman moments ever, almost ripped off Artemis’ arm when the dyke was going for a dirty strike.
