I really liked listening to Thistle Radio. Bluegrass has close ties to Scottish music, on account of the Appalachians being settled by them very early on. Unfortunately, the show finally ended last year in September. I don't know if that's country enough, though, so here's some Canote Brothers

i'd be interested if anyone has any arguments for why these might not be "real" country songs. i believe all the artists have the tag of country and yet most of the songs in this thread are the same kind of songs that show up whenever country music is mentioned, which i have no taste for

Has anyone else gave a listen to Post Malone's country album?
It's shit as you might have assumed.
Jelly Roll opened the door for rappers turned country and all of it fucking sucks.
Stick to rapping about drugs and suicide, it's much better than this country boy LARP.

I can't get over that thinking 90s country was peak is a common opinion. I get it if your papaw listened to it and it makes you nostalgic, but the majority of 90s country SUCKS.

I also enjoy me some Townes Van Zandt
Late, but you are a man of wealth and taste.

I like the version of Waiting Around to Die from Heartworn Highways. Also dig the old black man (Seymour Washington) in the background crying manly tears.
And this cover of Dead Flowers by the Rolling Stones. For the longest time, I had just assumed Townes had actually written this because it's that good. Who would think a British rock star could write such a good country song that a legend like Townes would cover it?
As another cover, Canadian alt-rockers Cowboy Junkies did To Live is to Fly. Margo Timmins has an exquisitely beautiful voice and they completely capture this song on Trinity Sessions album, an album perfectly recorded in a church.

Also has one of the hardest hitting couplets in lyrical history.

"Everything is not enough.
Nothing is too much to bear."

Think about what that means. If you stop with one meaning you're missing it.
And the most famous cover of a Townes song. Merle and Willie.
And to lighten the mood a bit, this goth cover of Jolene by Sisters of Mercy, which is better than it has any right to be.

I'm a big fan of Goth-Country cross over and I love Sisters of Mercy, but I can hardly hear the vocals over the music.
Yeah, the mix on that particular one kind of sucks. I've heard a better one but couldn't find it.

Thread tax, somewhat connected to Townes.
How is this Townes-related? Steve Earle has an anecdote about how he was playing and had Townes in the audience. Now, Earle notoriously worships him like a god. His idol is sitting in his audience and starts heckling him and demanding he play Wabash Cannonball.

Imagine that, you have what you probably thought would be the best possible thing, your idol in your audience while you're up on stage and then he relentlessly mocks you.
This is hilarious. He was almost crying it seemed.

Also a song by Steve.
