You can still open an account anytime as long as the child is under 18 years old. (not eligible for the free $1000)
Family and friends can contribute up to a limit of $5000 per year with no gift tax penalty.
The account stays closed to withdrawals until the child turns age 18, when it turns into a normal retirement account.
If the account invests in a typical U.S. stock index fund: Historically, U.S. stocks return around 7% per year after inflation. That means the $1,000 could grow to roughly $3,000 to $4,000 by age 18. As Venezuela continues to dig out of of the rubble of its recent earthquake, an odd beacon of hope rises above the rubble of the wrecked city of La Guaira. The Golden Arches. The local McDonalds location in the city not only survived the earthquake undamaged while all the state built commie blocks collapsed around it, it also still has power thanks to an on site generator. The metaphors are about as obvious as a Big Mac being thrown in your face. The store is now being used as an emergency room and veterinary hospital, since it still has electricity. Which means AC as well as freezers and refrigerators for storing perishable medications. It is also still serving burgers to first responders, doctors, and nurses.
I'm obsessed with the La Guaira McDonald's story. This is one of those amazing "truth is stranger then fiction" sort of stories. Apparently the Doctors were looking for a location to triage all the walking wounded in the immediate neighborhood, and the McDonalds was the only building still standing and undamaged. On top of having an open parking lot. They started doing the triage outside the building before the police gave them permission to move inside. At first they were unaware the building even had a generator until someone who worked at the store pointed it out to them.
