You can still open an account anytime as long as the child is under 18 years old. (not eligible for the free $1000)
Family and friends can contribute up to a limit of $5000 per year with no gift tax penalty.
The account stays closed to withdrawals until the child turns age 18, when it turns into a normal retirement account.
If the account invests in a typical U.S. stock index fund: Historically, U.S. stocks return around 7% per year after inflation. That means the $1,000 could grow to roughly $3,000 to $4,000 by age 18. (Must be index funds, No bonds, no crypto, no picking individual companies, no items, Fox only, Final Destination)
