🐱 People are offended that Miley Cyrus called virginity a ‘social construct’

In yet another chapter of Miley Cyrus’ long history of being provocative and controversial, the pop singer is most recently under fire for calling virginity a “social construct.”

With her recent “Mother’s Daughter” video and She is Coming EP, Cyrus is continuing to push empowering feminist narratives. Cyrus is clearly trying to continue that narrative on Instagram.

The first post in question, from July 9, shows a still of Cyrus from the “Mother’s Daughter” video with the phrase, “Virginity is a social construct.” Cyrus’ second post features her latex-covered hands around a vagina dentata, or a vagina with teeth, reiterating the phrase.

The controversy stems from the phrase “virginity is a social construct,” as some feel it is an attack on people who value their virginity.

“Honestly you shouldn’t be posting stuff like that,” Instagram user @anastasiiama wrote. “You should respect people’s choices and respect the fact that you have a young audience too. It’s not okay to shame people that chose to stay virgin.”

Some think Cyrus is rejecting science with her claim.

“That’s like saying puberty or menstration [SIC] is a social contract,” Instagram user @geoffcowan87 wrote. “They’re physical things, they involve physical changes. The strange stigmas people place on them are certainly through social constructs, but virginity itself is not. The ‘value’ we place on it is”

Others said they felt the posts attacked religious beliefs.

“I mean to some people are religious they should be able to believe and put importance on it because it is to them I think it shouldn’t be used to judge peoples character,” Instagram user @_fighting.evil.by.moonlight_ wrote.

However, some people felt empowered by Cyrus’ post. Instagram user @boovu detailed how they felt the concept of virginity has been used to police women and their bodies.

“Yes and placing a woman’s value based on virginity is a social construct designed by men to belittle and enslaved women,” the user wrote.

Wasn't she becoming more conservative and getting back in touch with her faith? Did I imagine that or did she just throw all that out the window?

It was probably her PR team and then they got the backlash, I would wonder why you'd listen to her, shes a girl who did a vogue cover semi nude when she was 15 and who knows what else happened to her during those years. She's broken.

This thot bounces around on her views more than she bounces on dick. She has no real opinions about anything other than how to recapture the fame she had when she was almost ten years younger.

Usually what rappers do when they fall off is they start producing. Just look at another little blonde girl named Marshall Mathers who did exactly that

After reading through all five pages I had to go back and reread the OP. She didn't say anything about the "values" of virginity. Just that virginity itself is a social construct, which is dumb and just another example of Leftists trying to redefine words.
That being said I do have a slight modicum of affection for lil skanky, if only for making me belly laugh with tweets like this

Oh man, imagine what Billy Ray's achy breaky heart is going through right now. I just don't think I'd understand.
guys I think Miley Cyrus might've seen sexually abused at disney.
Show me on this doll where the Mouse touched you.
I wonder if she'll end up in Dubai one day, servicing wealthy arabs.
I though she already did.
What's weird is that this sounds like something a mega virgin would say to defend their virginity, but I can guarantee she's fucked more than your average porn star.
I think she's trying to go the opposite route.
Pretty much everything is a social construct in terms of how society creates traditions, mores, and values based on the associations and importance it places on certain concepts. Did you know: money is a social construct?

Why is this suddenly news to people? I understand some very sensitive Christians could be butthurt because this challenges the notion that virginity wasn't a concept descended on high by God himself, but I suspect most religious people could acknowledge that the majority of society's traditions and associations of virginity and its value are primarily culturally-based.

I guess nobody took an introductory sociology course.
Is evolution a social construct? "Evolution" and "virginity" are both words that describe something. Words are also social constructs. This is what I don't like about Leftists is that they believe words create reality, instead of words describing reality. This is why you get this gem, "“Yes and placing a woman’s value based on virginity is a social construct designed by men to belittle and enslaved women,” the user wrote." By this logic, why do women get upset if a guy cheats on her? Monogamy is a social construct. Doesn't that enslave men? Human males as animals are naturally inclined to spread their seed. Did the male constructed social patriarchy decide to enslave itself?

The problem I have with the word "construct" is that it implies a deliberate plan to some sort of end goal. The value of virginity probably goes way back before modern religion into prehistory where guys knowing they are working to provide for their offspring created a more healthy, stable society. So it's more like a social evolution. Leftists think they can deconstruct, and then reconstruct society into what is a utopia in their own mind. And like trying to deconstruct and reconstruct human DNA so we can become more like the animals nature intended us to be, we're just going to create an abomination that wishes for death.
It is a lot of things. The physical presence of an XX or XY chromosome is not though. The social duties that come with the XX or XY chromosome are. The sexual paraphernalia hanging off your body though, is very real. God I hope that term catches on...
But doesn't those social duties come from the differences between the XXs or XYs?

It's not like you can have a career in corporate media if you don't push the narrative anyway, so I guess she chose career.
Maybe redefining what virginity is is her way of becoming more conservative. She's still totally a virgin because that's how she identifies, and all those STDs her "doctors" say she has aren't real and it's just a ploy for the patriarchy to mansplain why it burns when she pees.

I always wondered what the endgame is for the girls who fucked hundreds of guys and are now in their 40s and 50s with nothing to show for it. I assumed it’d be cats, SSRIs and suicide but I wonder for thots who move to the right there will be a surge of born again virgin ceremonies so they can pretend the last 600+ dicks didn’t happen.

The way Miley Cyrus go, I wonder how Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison might react if and when Miley join the 27 Club?

The white trash part the right simply requires that you identity as a Christian. You don't need to make the effort.

I've honestly always thought the whole "____ is a social construct. BTFO conservatards!" shit was retarded in general. Almost everything related to human civilization is a "social construct." By that logic, they shouldn't have any problem with someone yelling nigger through a megaphone in the middle of times square on MLK day, since that being considered offensive is just a "social construct."

I agree. It’s another one of those queer theory things isn’t it? Nothing is real, mangle language until no one can pin down a definition or meaning, break all boundaries etc. This idea that breaking barriers is good in and of itself is terrible for society. Some of those boundaries are there for good reason.

I don’t think fetishisation of virginity is necessarily a good thing, but neither is saying it’s nothing at all. That’s skating too close to the argument that losing it very early or in a way that isn’t enthusiastically consented isn’t harmful, when it certainly can be. It’s yet another slip down the slope to arguing that sex is so insignificant/ positive that no one should be saying no to anything and a child of any age can consent.

Cyrus’s audience are young and I dont think this is a healthy message ( god I sound like some wittering old biddy but hopefully you get my drift...)
You're not a biddy, her attitude lead to the state of California's aids crisis and is a great way to make sure you're riddled with STDs.

It's obvious that she is just trying to sound controversial to sell her album.

While we are talking about social constructs, how about "being a promiscuous slut is empowering". This is a totally manufactured from the whole cloth social construct if I ever saw one.

For majority of human history being a slut was extremely dangerous for a woman. Being pregnant without social support made you extremely vulnerable, and there was a great chance that your offspring will simply not survive.

Promiscuous behavior is still in fact dangerous even with pill, fully legalized abortion, and STD protection. It's dangerous for both men and women, but I would argue that women are more affected, and not because of social stigma, but because of mentioned earlier negative impact on pair bonding and creating a family.

Every slut risks ending up alone and childless when aged, and it's definitely socially disadvantageous. It's clearly harmful both emotionally and physically.

So yeah, slutting up as a viable lifestyle is a totally social construct imho.

"being a promiscuous slut is empowering".

Honestly I cringe when I hear this as a ‘feminist’ message. Third wave feminism, with its ‘sex work is empowering!’ shit has done so much damage. The positive idea that women shouldn’t be ashamed of normal sexual desire, or that women shouldn’t be seen as Madonna/whore objects whose only worth was purity has been twisted so badly that it’s ended up harming women. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying sex but the idea of moderation, healthy boundaries and respect seems to have gone out the window.

Again it’s this boundary breaking thing. When it comes to sex, boundaries are healthy. Without boundaries you’re vulnerable, and young people are especially vulnerable, to abuse, harm and diseases. Boundaries are a good thing. Self respect is a good thing. Sex is also a good thing, but not without the self respect and the boundaries.

Distrust anyone telling you that you’re wrong for having personal boundaries, whether that’s by mocking for virginity (a shitty thing to do) or for being transphobic for not wanting ladydick, or doing anything that’s outside your comfort zone

Self respect, people...it’s a dying art.

It could be that people who are likely to have 0-1 partners before marriage tend to be more religious and less likely to seek out a divorce. Or additional partners before marriage could ruin the "bonding" process that is supposed to occur between a sexual couple in preparation for their starting a family. It's interesting that a woman could have 10-20 partners and still only have a 50 percent chance of divorcing. There's a lot of guys out there who would probably be okay with those odds.

This is what I don't like about Leftists is that they believe words create reality, instead of words describing reality.

That's just the left wing attitude these days, reality is whatever they say it is.

It reminds me of Videodrome: "Television is reality and reality is less than television."

The positive idea that women shouldn’t be ashamed of normal sexual desire, or that women shouldn’t be seen as Madonna/whore objects whose only worth was purity has been twisted so badly that it’s ended up harming women.

All of this shit that started 50 years ago has been twisted into doing more harm than good half a century later, that's true of not just the female stuff but also the racial stuff.

The [importance/lack of importance] of [not having vaginal intercourse/not having had certain kinds of non-penetrative sexual contact/not having had ANY sexual contact with another person/not having had any sexual contact including masturbation] before [a particular age/marriage/a coming of age ritual/whatever] is absolutely given importance purely by fiat and changes from society to society rather than inherently having importance because of nature.

Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, nor that the value assigned to it isn't legitimate. Money only exists, essentially, because we say it does; that doesn't mean it isn't real or doesn't have importance assigned to it, or that assigning importance is inherently bad. Most armchair post-modernists make the unwarranted to leap from "X is a social construct and doesn't have any intrinsic value beyond what society gives it" to "because X doesn't have intrinsic value, it can't have ANY value", which is where shit gets stupid and words stop making sense.

The worst part is the hypocrisy.

They're "sex positive" when it comes to women slutting it up and spreading aids but then wage a Jihad on male sexual fantasies.
