🐱 People are offended that Miley Cyrus called virginity a ‘social construct’

In yet another chapter of Miley Cyrus’ long history of being provocative and controversial, the pop singer is most recently under fire for calling virginity a “social construct.”

With her recent “Mother’s Daughter” video and She is Coming EP, Cyrus is continuing to push empowering feminist narratives. Cyrus is clearly trying to continue that narrative on Instagram.

The first post in question, from July 9, shows a still of Cyrus from the “Mother’s Daughter” video with the phrase, “Virginity is a social construct.” Cyrus’ second post features her latex-covered hands around a vagina dentata, or a vagina with teeth, reiterating the phrase.

The controversy stems from the phrase “virginity is a social construct,” as some feel it is an attack on people who value their virginity.

“Honestly you shouldn’t be posting stuff like that,” Instagram user @anastasiiama wrote. “You should respect people’s choices and respect the fact that you have a young audience too. It’s not okay to shame people that chose to stay virgin.”

Some think Cyrus is rejecting science with her claim.

“That’s like saying puberty or menstration [SIC] is a social contract,” Instagram user @geoffcowan87 wrote. “They’re physical things, they involve physical changes. The strange stigmas people place on them are certainly through social constructs, but virginity itself is not. The ‘value’ we place on it is”

Others said they felt the posts attacked religious beliefs.

“I mean to some people are religious they should be able to believe and put importance on it because it is to them I think it shouldn’t be used to judge peoples character,” Instagram user @_fighting.evil.by.moonlight_ wrote.

However, some people felt empowered by Cyrus’ post. Instagram user @boovu detailed how they felt the concept of virginity has been used to police women and their bodies.

“Yes and placing a woman’s value based on virginity is a social construct designed by men to belittle and enslaved women,” the user wrote.

Pretty much everything is a social construct in terms of how society creates traditions, mores, and values based on the associations and importance it places on certain concepts. Did you know: money is a social construct?

Why is this suddenly news to people? I understand some very sensitive Christians could be butthurt because this challenges the notion that virginity wasn't a concept descended on high by God himself, but I suspect most religious people could acknowledge that the majority of society's traditions and associations of virginity and its value are primarily culturally-based.

I guess nobody took an introductory sociology course.
to religious people its a lot easier than that. cultural rules and tradition can be traced back to scripture, scripture is the work of god, end of discussion. very simple concept
and more reasonable than whatever hogwash sociologists come up with tbh

nigger did you even read your own link
it isn't even about STDs but about yeast infections

Saying "(thing) is a social construct" is a great way to stir shit about a variety of topics. I think some people just don't get the concept and get offended like you're saying (thing) isn't important or should be abolished or something. When really you're just saying the thing only has whatever meaning humans assign to it. Which is a lot of things.

It is a lot of things. The physical presence of an XX or XY chromosome is not though. The social duties that come with the XX or XY chromosome are. The sexual paraphernalia hanging off your body though, is very real. God I hope that term catches on...

The only thing offensive here is that Miley thinks her personal opinion matters and apparently so does DailyDot. Every little stupid thing that someone famous says doesn't need an entire article devoted to it, unless it's Jayden Smith's tweets because that shit is hilarious.

The problem with being ignorant is that you never see the problem of forcing your ignorance on others in the misguided belief that it's enlightening, and further compounding that with assuming the backlash is somehow proof you were right.

her evil lifestyle and advocacies,
Lol, nigga calm down, the only thing that separates her from a million other singers/musicians that fucked a lot of people and did a bunch of drugs is that she got famous as a teenager so it freaks people out in a way that it doesn't from some random rock dude who got famous at 22. And maybe people are more bothered by a famous woman singer being a whore than a famous man musician fucking a bunch of groupies, but I don't think that's all of it.

Stupid? Yeah probably. Evil? Nah.

Yeah but it's irrational to expect people who don't follow that religion to follow the tenets of their religion. Expecting an atheist to follow Christian traditions is no different than expecting a Christian to follow Hindu traditions.

how would that work
outside of some really fucked up fringe cases (like someone contracting HIV from their mother during birth) i can't figure out how that is supposed to happen

I reckon you could jizz on a snatch without penetrating it, or something like that. Anal doesn't count, right? You can get just about anything that way, too. Some of the bacterial ones can spread via the oral route, if you don't count blowjobs or muff-diving. You could be the unintentional recipient of a snowball, or one of the victims of that dentist that was blasting his babies into his patients' mouths with a syringe. It's also well-known that several dildo sellers on Amazon are passing on refurbished product as new, so there's that vector.

fuck that noise, I wanna see discussion on the teeth on those panties & why Miley would be subtly marketing alongside a concept like Vagina Dentata.

lol, vagina dentata is one of my favorite cultural memes. The thing is, it kind of exists.

I mean, she's right that a lot of our ideas on virginity are social constructs. But that's such an inane statement, everything is a social construct. The idea of human rights is a social construct. Thinking hoes are some sort of freedom fighters is also a social construct and arguably more autistic than valuing virginity.
