🐱 People are offended that Miley Cyrus called virginity a ‘social construct’

In yet another chapter of Miley Cyrus’ long history of being provocative and controversial, the pop singer is most recently under fire for calling virginity a “social construct.”

With her recent “Mother’s Daughter” video and She is Coming EP, Cyrus is continuing to push empowering feminist narratives. Cyrus is clearly trying to continue that narrative on Instagram.

The first post in question, from July 9, shows a still of Cyrus from the “Mother’s Daughter” video with the phrase, “Virginity is a social construct.” Cyrus’ second post features her latex-covered hands around a vagina dentata, or a vagina with teeth, reiterating the phrase.

The controversy stems from the phrase “virginity is a social construct,” as some feel it is an attack on people who value their virginity.

“Honestly you shouldn’t be posting stuff like that,” Instagram user @anastasiiama wrote. “You should respect people’s choices and respect the fact that you have a young audience too. It’s not okay to shame people that chose to stay virgin.”

Some think Cyrus is rejecting science with her claim.

“That’s like saying puberty or menstration [SIC] is a social contract,” Instagram user @geoffcowan87 wrote. “They’re physical things, they involve physical changes. The strange stigmas people place on them are certainly through social constructs, but virginity itself is not. The ‘value’ we place on it is”

Others said they felt the posts attacked religious beliefs.

“I mean to some people are religious they should be able to believe and put importance on it because it is to them I think it shouldn’t be used to judge peoples character,” Instagram user @_fighting.evil.by.moonlight_ wrote.

However, some people felt empowered by Cyrus’ post. Instagram user @boovu detailed how they felt the concept of virginity has been used to police women and their bodies.

“Yes and placing a woman’s value based on virginity is a social construct designed by men to belittle and enslaved women,” the user wrote.

Anything women get snippy about is a "social construct"
Considering her daddy is most definitely a God-fearing hick and all those Disney fucks are known to wear promise rings, I'd say this is a case of "the homophobe was secretly the homo all along"

She bent over for the first guy who asked and she regrets it. Shit, if she got raped by Disney maybe she's trying to downplay it. "Virginity doesn't matter because I got mine taken by a 40 year old on my show's payroll"

Either way you slice it she's a skank.

how would that work
outside of some really fucked up fringe cases (like someone contracting HIV from their mother during birth) i can't figure out how that is supposed to happen

Lots of stuff that isn’t technically sex can transmit diseases. Oral sex, using hands, and anal sex (if you’re of the school of thought that someone can still be a virgin after that...) Stuff like contamination of needles, dental and surgical tools, contaminated blood etc.

Virginity exists. Our attitudes to it are the social construct.

It still fails to address the presupposition that "social constructs" are necessarily insignificant or disposable, which seems to be the deliberately unspoken angle anyone who brings them up is going for. It's technically correct, but it's a bit like saying your legs aren't necessary to live. That's also technically correct, but it's dismissive of a whole host of legitimate factors that are why we consider legs to be very important.

I agree. It’s another one of those queer theory things isn’t it? Nothing is real, mangle language until no one can pin down a definition or meaning, break all boundaries etc. This idea that breaking barriers is good in and of itself is terrible for society. Some of those boundaries are there for good reason.

I don’t think fetishisation of virginity is necessarily a good thing, but neither is saying it’s nothing at all. That’s skating too close to the argument that losing it very early or in a way that isn’t enthusiastically consented isn’t harmful, when it certainly can be. It’s yet another slip down the slope to arguing that sex is so insignificant/ positive that no one should be saying no to anything and a child of any age can consent.

Cyrus’s audience are young and I dont think this is a healthy message ( god I sound like some wittering old biddy but hopefully you get my drift...)

You can argue that our entire banking/financial system is a social construct. Most money in the world doesn't exactly exist, it's been conjured out of thin air and it has value precisely because there are enough people willing to buy into the fiction that it exists and is valuable. "Social" constructs exist when there are people who have something to gain by believing in them, and authorities willing to punish those who don't believe in them.

I could totally say that "debt is a social construct", but if I owed a lot of money to an SJW, I doubt they would agree and let me off the hook.

This is a very important point. It is a "social construct" to say that young children should not be engaging in sexual activity but it is an incredibly important thing. I'm all for the argument that virginity shouldn't be shamed but sometimes it seems like they're going full circle and shaming it for shittier reasons instead - it's bad to say "you're a virgin so you're a loser", but is it okay to say "you're a virgin which means you're trying to lord your prudish ways over us"? I don't think everyone making her argument (and I don't know enough about Cyrus herself to be sure) intends that but I get your worry about slippery slopes. Too often "don't shame X" turns into "only we have the authority to shame X because it furthers our agenda". It should be seen as okay and normal for a teenager to decide to wait for sex because the emotional and medical consequences are a very heavy burden. They are normal burdens for a healthy adult life, but the key word is adult. Let them dip their toes into the pool slowly.

There are no SJWs in a foxhole. A moneyless society feels good when it's just talk but watch what happens the second they have bills to pay.

I don't understand the "so and so is a social construct, ergo we need to get rid of it." Do these fuckaroos expect to benefit from pulling all the threads out of society?
Most don't think that far ahead. The majority believe that as long as only they do it, society will be better off.

Now every once and a blue moon you'll get some 3EjyferMeh type that wants society to collapse because they think they'll finally be free to fuck whoever they want and kill anybody they want, but those faggots are rare and never accomplish any real headway towards their goals.

Oh wow such deep insight from Miley. It’s just promotion for her god awful and hysterical video...

https://youtube.com/watch?v=7T2RonyJ_TsHey Miley, show me with your “dancing” where the bad men at Disney touched you...

Edit: oops wrong link lol
Umm is that an electric wheelchair bound black tranny? I know that literal combination is kinda in vogue, but still...

I mean, they pretty much only do have a problem with it because society tells them to. YMMV on if society is right to do so, but it's definitely a societal thing. If society started telling us thottery was good eventually most people would be down with it.
Are you telling me that the mainstream media and hollywood aren't telling us thottery is good? Frankly it's a testament to the natural revulsion to thottery that things aren't much worse.

Girls can easily catch all kinds of shit in public swimming pools, etc. You sound like a virgin.
I don't think anyone is talking about swimming in some dirty swimming hole or unclean hottub without showering after and getting some minor yeast infection or UTI that's gone in 2 days. Yeah you can get athletes foot from showering in a public shower, but you aren't gonna catch GRIDS from it. In fact, things like staph infections you can get from any public facility are much more serious.

Pretty much everything is a social construct in terms of how society creates traditions, mores, and values based on the associations and importance it places on certain concepts. Did you know: money is a social construct?

Why is this suddenly news to people? I understand some very sensitive Christians could be butthurt because this challenges the notion that virginity wasn't a concept descended on high by God himself, but I suspect most religious people could acknowledge that the majority of society's traditions and associations of virginity and its value are primarily culturally-based.

I guess nobody took an was successfully brainwashed by their introductory sociology course.
Yeah. I took one. It told me I was a ethnocentric chauvinist who for some crazy reason didn't think it was OK for men from the Sambia tribes to take 9 year old boys from their mothers, brutally beat them, and then make them suck older men off until they finish puberty because ingesting semen 'turns them into strong warrior men.' Maybe I'm just the weird one who thinks some (Western and Far East) cultures make logical sense and are better than others though.

It's also almost like very real chemicals are released in the brain in and after coitus and the first time and first person you choose to do it with affects you psychologically going forward including your feelings toward that person, ability to pair bond, "type," and likelihood of risky sexual behavior. Having a lot of sexual partners prior to pair bonding also reduces your likelihood to successfully hold onto a marriage, so there's that consideration. There's also the very real Madonna/whore complex/genetic strategy that drives men to grab a quick fuck and ditch easy, willing women while protecting and providing for ones that are more choosy that people have been doing since the dawn of humanity.

Saying "(thing) is a social construct" is a great way to stir shit about a variety of topics. I think some people just don't get the concept and get offended like you're saying (thing) isn't important or should be abolished or something. When really you're just saying the thing only has whatever meaning humans assign to it. Which is a lot of things.
It is a lot of things. The physical presence of an XX or XY chromosome is not though. The social duties that come with the XX or XY chromosome are. The sexual paraphernalia hanging off your body though, is very real. God I hope that term catches on...
I think this leaves out some pretty major crossovers between how people organize society/social constructs and biological wiring that influences them.

Beauty is a social construct. OK kinda... Symmetry and waist to hip ratio have been important to men in all cultures in all ages, with some biological reasons like signifiers of health and ability to carry a child to term.

Gender roles are a social construct except for the fact that men's and women's endocrine systems are very different because of that one chromosome which effects them both mentally and physically. Does that mean everything is biologically determined? No, but a lot of stuff surely is determined and others influenced heavily.

I could think up more examples, but what I'm getting at is that "social constructs" are more influenced by actual biology than a lot of people like to think.

I don't understand the "so and so is a social construct, ergo we need to get rid of it." Do these fuckaroos expect to benefit from pulling all the threads out of society?
Yes. They are paid very well to do so.

I don't believe this bit, of course who you lose your virginity to is significant but we're not magically programmed to be tied to our one true love or some such nonsense.

Wasn't she becoming more conservative and getting back in touch with her faith? Did I imagine that or did she just throw all that out the window?

It's not like you can have a career in corporate media if you don't push the narrative anyway, so I guess she chose career.

Speaking of "social construct", I love how "Christian = right and therefore demands apology" while "Muslim = left and therefore is all good". Talk about that if you want a case study in cultural constructs.

It definitely helps, and you can't tell me the oxytocin released in the brain after sex doesn't have an effect on people and that having that attachment to more people affects them for better or worse

This thot bounces around on her views more than she bounces on dick. She has no real opinions about anything other than how to recapture the fame she had when she was almost ten years younger.
