What are the most pretentious games ever made?

I got a few.

-Doki Doki Literature Club: The entire game is one big gimmick of "oH mA gAhD, it's a dating sim visual novel but secretly a hOrRoR gAme that breaks the CHUNGUS heckin' fourth wall!!1111!!"
And of course, the obligatory woke depression lecturing in the game, because every indie game needs to virtue signal about how bad depression is. Main dev still wears a mask and likes anime lolis.

-Braid: Hipster bullshit platformer that acts like it's the deepest thing ever for having you play the bad guy as a plot twist. DUHN DUHN DUUUUUUHN! Also, the dev for this game is about as insufferably pretentious as his own game.

While you're not wrong, you also should understand that this "game" is pretty much a ripoff of a much better VN (as in it's not being pretentious) "YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story"

I enjoyed KH3 up until the last hour or two. But I did not buy the DLC out of principle. Remove all the FF characters from the base game and then resell them to you in the DLC.
I completely understand, but that dlc literally fixed all the problems I had with the finale. Also the FF characters weren't in it that much

Its basically an extended final fight, were you get the option to play as almost every kh side hero. Alongside the most kickass bonus boss fights of the entire series

I'm a lot more forgiving because I know the hell it was to develop this and appreciate the extended apology.

Didn't know they allowed you to actually use the series characters in the DLC but the finale still sucked ass and I'm sick of Japanese companies fixing their games post launch (at least western devs fixed is mainly bugs).

Almost every meta plot sucks because the writer must talk down to the player on how evil he is for enjoying playing a fucking game because fictional characters have feelings.

I know Bandai Namco is essentially the worst offender of the bad movie/tv show game trope and the only company I know that's still consistently churning that sort of stuff past 2013 but look at this thing I just heard of.

Just the notion of the story alone is absolutely cringeworthy even for anime game standards.

Don't forget Live a Live, which is pretty much close to the first video game that does the sort of stuff where it "looks like a typical [insert cliche 90's video game genre here] but it's actually a horror story" and it's also not pretentious (unlike most of the stuff SE does in these days).

It's not a VN, but the base idea is still more or less the same thing but with RPGs and not Dating Sim VNs.

Why I started playing KH was mostly bc of the FF characters (telling me I'd be able to hear cloud talk was enough for me to buy). 2s beginning was a slog but more then enjoyable too justify it. 3 I just hear no redeeming qualities

3 had a lot of development troubles and had to tie up all the loose ends from the side games. There's a lot of Disney padding till everything actually comes together in the final battle and Remind. Some of it is genuinely fun padding like pirates and tangled, while others are obligatory like frozen or monsters inc.

Reading between the lines it seems like the whole thing was a chore to make and Nomura set it up to properly take the story in a direction he wanted to actually go into with the realm of the dead/real world

If it's any consolation the next one looks like it will go all in on FF references. Hell the title Remind isn't a referring to anything else but the lost FF Versus.

I'd heard people talk fondly about that game for years and then I see the Ross Scott review and wonder what the fuck everyone else was playing. It's just some nondescript 3rd-person shooter.
Its insanely overrated. The fact that there's no choice based story consequences for the advanced knowledge gained is madness. The enemy's aren't even that great. They either are lame as hell or intimate objects that can easily be defeated by standing close to a building or tree.

Dam near every game they made except max Payne belongs on here.

That's pretty much why i despise Undertale and Spec Ops: The Line, i fucking hate games whose main selling point is berating the player.

The Stanley Parable always stuck out as one of the most pretentious games I've ever seen. You just know the people writing the script were howling with laughter at how witty and smart their jokes were.

On top of that, it was clear that not everyone liked the style they went for and the devs SEETHED over it and made a DLC based around raging over mean steam reviews.

You can do meta well, just don't force the player into choices and then act like he had a choice or new extra context behind them that is only shown after the fact.

Also never moralize player for playing the game.

The thing that stuck out to me is there's no back and forth. It would be a bit bearable if there was some kind of way to respond or transition to what the narrator was saying but it came across as very hallow and meanspirited at all times.

Portal and most other games like it did the entire concept better because it was a slow gradual transition from seeming friend to enemy. It wasn't immediately apparent that the voice on the other end hates your guts and if or when it was, you usually had a goal to take them out.

There actually was a free multiplayer game I played called Drawn to death that did this and it was so shit. The game itself was ok, honestly could have had some legs but....

Someone thought it was a wonderful, simply wonderful idea to have this guy mock you with the worst kind of language every time you leveled up.

This lead to predictable results
