"just go to greener pastures". Well, go to WHERE exactly? I mean this question beyond simply fanbase over nerd shit, I also mean things like our political shitshow nightmare we all live in.
It's a case by case thing.
Like I was saying with
@the Oddfather the ideal scenario is they don't get infected in the first place. If they are infected, maybe you can get them to change course. If the rot is set in deep enough, it's better to just abandon them than the consoomer mindset of throwing money at them and complaining online in the hope they'll change. Throwing money at Marvel and Star Wars movies didn't get them to change course. It was bomb after bomb that got them to finally start considering the idea of changing course.
If you're talking about globalist politics, then yes, there is no new world to move to.
Not every fandom or subculture has a place to go. Racing games have been dead for years.
But in the case of Warhammer 40,000. You have options. One Page Rules, Bolt Action, Konflict 47, Frostgrave, Stargrave, Gaslands, and more. Into models? Gunpla, Tamiya, and third party kits like Mantic, Northstar, and Wargames Atlantic. Even within Games Workshop you have Killteam, Age of Sigmar, and (until recently) Horus Heresy. Fuck, you could even play old editions. But there's always some excuse. Some are valid (it's not so easy to find old books and a willing player), but most are just bullshit. Even if you struggle through it, the fanbase is still miserable. They obsess over a game they hate. At a certain point, they're too draining to be around.
Going back to earlier in the thread, there's Trench Crusade. A successful kickstarter based on being a 40k killer that, after it's success, immediately got political, started banning people, and tanked it's chances. That's one game out of all the examples I listed, but fuck it, there are no other options. Got to keep playing 40k. The idea that could not do any miniatures wargames isn't considered either.
In terms of video gaming, the issue is the same. AAA games are low quality design-by-comity DEI slop that charge an high price. Then there's an abundance of high quality, reasonably priced indies, but there's always some excuse. Often their idea of an indie game is locked somewhere around 2016, complaining about asset flips and pixel shit even though modern indies are often silly life sims and physics based party games. Others complain that because there are some woke indie games, all indie games are now bad by default. I disagree, but they won't turn that same logic to AAA. They instead keep buying slop and then complaining that it's shit.
