Parodying Randy Newman not the same as South Park bitching and moaning over him winning more musical award than Matt and Trey did. Hell South Park just as salty over Phill Collin winning song awards over Matt and Trey.
They were mad about not winning little tin trophies? To this extent? ‘Hollywood, we hate you, we’re above you. Reward us!’
That makes me think back to the episode where the famous musical producers were actually hardcore bros, and had to come around and accept Randy, the outsider producer. I thought the joke was the absurdity of the scenario (and the exaggeration of how far a musical can go to get you laid), but since we know Randy is a Trey stand in now, I wonder if it was just covert bitching about not being in the in-crowd on Broadway.
At least that episode is genuinely hilarious.
I remember the DVD commentary concerning it. According to them (which is pure cope) they knew they were going to lose but they didn't expect nor want to lose to Phil Collins. They said there were other better songs and artists in that category. I actually watched the 72nd Academy Awards on television way back then and remember the musical performances for Best Music (Original Song) category. "Blame Canada" was memorable because Trey Parker and Matt Stone managed to get Robin Williams to perform the song for them with a number of background performers.

The only issue was the competition was really shallow that year. You had "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins in
Tarzan; "Music of my Heart" by Dianne Warren in
Music of the Heart; "Save Me" by Aimee Mann in
Magnolia; and lastly "When She Loved Me" by Randy Newman for
Toy Story 2. I don't remember the rest of the performances other than "Save Me" which was just Aimee Mann standing there playing the guitar and Phil Collins playing the piano for "You'll Be in My Heart". Two Disney films, two live action films that are largely forgotten, and one animated film by Paramount; who do you think is going to win? It was going to be Disney and it wasn't going to be a Pixar film if Disney had any anything to do with it behind the scenes.
I genuinely think they were upset they lost and it's absolutely hilarious to think about it decades later after not watching South Park for 15 years. They pulled strings to put on a big number for a live award show and still lost to Phil Collins sitting down.
These guys didn't go to Hollywood to make South Park, they wanted to make other content and South Park was just a side project that morphed into a full time show for them. They clearly wanted to do musicals but never were successful at it beyond a few memorable South Park songs. I don't think a single song from the Book of Mormon has permeated pop culture. "Now You're a Man" from Orgazmo has more cultural influence than that broadway show.
This reminds me of the band Tool. They have a devoted fan base despite releasing one album in a 19 year span. Every band member rather do something else and tried to do other things but always get back together to tour to make money. They hate their fans, they hate their catalog, but have no choice to do it because they want the money. Same with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, they rather do something else but have no choice but to return to South Park because they need the money.
