There's actually a term for this. Some mental health professionals divide narcissists into two categories: vulnerable and invulnerable. Invulnerable narcissists are sometimes classed as a form of sociopath, because they absolutely do not give a shit what other people think of them, and will do anything to advance their goals and gain the high standing they feel is their birthright. They ignore criticism and are unaffected by appeals to their better nature (they don't have one). Vulnerable narcissists are a whole different animal, and both Dan and Vinny are of this type. They have an insatiable need for praise and adulation and feel this is their right. If those things are not forthcoming, they become very angry and lash out at those they feel are not giving them their due. They cannot handle any sort of criticism even if it's justified, and no matter how gently it is delivered. Anyone who does not offer 100% unconditional praise is the enemy and will be treated accordingly. Margo (Venus Angelic's mom) is this sort. Jon Sweet (Iconoclast) is probably of this type as well. Vox Day and Milo from Breitbart are the invulnerable types, they don't care what other people think of them and any negative views of them are dismissed as the ramblings of lesser people. I just put those two there for comparison.
EDIT: One thing I forgot to add about vulnerable narcs: They DO have empathy and remorse. They can and do feel bad about hurting people to get attention, but such traits are often suppressed by their ego. Not all of them do, but it is possible to teach them to consider other people's feeling when contemplating a course of action. I am friends with someone like this, and she said learning how to do this was more painful that when she had a kidney stone, so that should tell you the level of difficulty involved. But it is within the realm of possibility.
