Ever hear any anime "urban legends" growing up?

Dragon Ball AF
I totally forgot about that. Wasn't it a fan manga or something?
Only about Pokemon. That it gave some children epilepsy and that some other kids jumped out of the window and got injuries/died cause they saw the characters in the anime do the same or whatever.
That actually happened though.

The only one I ever really remember hearing about was about sailor moon how if you paused it at the right time during when they transform you could see their titties.

iirc once or twice (in the first run DIC dub that only got through part of R) they didn't remove the boob lines like they generally tried
obviously it wasn't full on nipples and tiddy like the Cutey Honey OVAs in the 90s

I never actually tried it you couldn't pause TV back then and nobody was gonna tape that shit just to try it. Sailor moon was annoying it was bad enough having to listen to it when my sister watched it. Back in the 90's i'm pretty sure the only anime titties I seen were in ninja scroll and akira when they came on TV.

you don't even have to pause, it's just that when they do the glowing spin with body contours there's contours indicating that boobs exist
it's still LSD colored-leotards, just a couple of curves

Yeah I know that. It was more that supposedly there was a certain frame you could pause at and it would be there. Right before the glowing pink shit or something I can't remember. This was from the days when pausing things at an exact frame was difficult to do all you had was a VCR if you really wanted to try.

I heard there was an episode of Dragon Ball Z that never aired outside Japan where Tien Shinhan has one of his ribs removed so that he can perform a new sit up technique.

The distinction between "anime" and "cartoon" comes down to more than just who did the animation--who actually wrote the thing counts as well.
I think people over complicate things. Was it primarily made for a Japanese audience? If yes, then it’s anime. Otherwise it’s a cartoon.

Would the rumor that Naoko Takeuchi hating the US because of the changes to Sailor Moon be one? The changes came about because of the television rules and practices law at the time in the 1990s, and the series went out of print because I think Toei Animation lost the license distribution rights or something?

Leo Burnett and 4Kids are the devil is another one. Eric Stuart said that they all got shit pay for dubbing.

I do recall some scammers claiming they had an R-rated Japanese cut of Transformers The Movie and trying to get chumps to pay them. So many fools believed it too! Here's the thread
The Japanese Transformers shows/media have a couple

1. Megatron and Galvatron are separate people (due to Takara doing a stop motion special to promote the series three toys due to the TF movie not getting a release until 1989 and them needing something to introduce some of the characters from the movie, along with pages posted without context regarding a Transformers manga story where Starscream's ghost builds an army of Megatron doubles to try and kill Galvatron and Rodimus); ironically IDW would make this canon during their comic series.

2. Metrotitan, an evil decepticon repaint of Metroplex, was a zombified version of Metroplex that went evil

3. The Japanese retools of the Mega Pretenders were Space Mafia hitmen

Other shows:

Sailor Moon had the urban legend one website pushed (via claiming to have read an interview with the show's creator) that Sailor Uranus was a man in the Silver Millennial past and was reincarnated as a woman, hence Uranus being a butch lesbian and that her relationship with Neptune isn't gay

Several episodes of Samurai Pizza Cats didn't get dubbed because the bad guy engaged in blatant gay shit beyond just crossdressing for a disguise

That the ending of Gatchaman (the original series) was super violent with a graphic torture scene too hot for US TV (it's still violent, but not as violent as it was hyped as being). Along with the story that G-Force was canceled after five episodes on the air on TBS, because someone realized it was Battle of the Planets but re-edited and redubbed and not a new show as they assumed it was.

I forgot to mention the alleged Sailor Earth of which there is none lol

Which episode of Gachaman was it because all I remember from the finale is the villain dying ala LOTR and Revenge of the Sith by falling onto the lava rocks.

Someone once told me that in the first season episode where Serena and co go to a hot springs, at the sequence where her little brother steals her towel, if you pause you get to see Serena/Usagi's ass.

IIRC this isn't even true in the Japanese version. In fact the only real nudity the Japanese version has is near the end of Sailor Stars (I recall some bits earlier but the girls are always drawn as featureless blobs).

Nope.

Naoko likes the US dub of Sailor Moon, in so far as not hating it and accepting the fact that shit had to be changed to get it on the air and a mix of "better a bowdlerized dub that retains the tone and themes of the show than the wholesale rape that was the Toonmakers live action/animated remake that has all of the worst fucking elements of current year wokism before they became the norm" and acknowledging that the US version effectively insured Sailor Moon's immortality as far as being a big hit in the US and keeping the flame going for the franchise long after the show went off the air in Japan.

That said, her chief issue was always with Toei and among other things, Toei making drastic changes to the story (partly because the anime ran at the same time as the manga and kept having to churn out filler), how the show RADICALLY rewrote Sailor Mars/Raye to create a dynamic for the core three scouts (Moon, Mars, and Mercury) where Serena and Raye were rivals and frienemies and Amy as the peacemaker, and the fact that the show was run by people who wanted to replace the Scouts with lesbian Mary Sues, wanted to get rid of Serena and replace her with Rini, and those who wanted to get rid of Darien and create a flashier pop idol boyfriend for Serena.

Shit ultimately hit the fan for Naoko when she got into a spat with Toei over royalties from the franchise, which coincided with the infamous live action Sailor Moon show that Toei produced. As part of the spat, Toei maliciously refused to re-up ALL outside distribution deals with Sailor Moon outside Japan; both to starve Naoko of money she got from those deals, but also to try and artificially boost syndication deals in other Asian countries for the failed live action show (which Toei explicitly declared would never be released in the US).

As for the original US dub, the excuse floating around for why it hasn't been re-issued on DVD since Toei started re-issuing the rights to the show to the US, is that the master tapes are in dire shape and Viz, who overspent to get the rights to Sailor Moon and then made a DISASTEROUS decision to give Hulu exclusive broadcast rights to it and Crystal (a deal that banned Viz from cutting a deal to air the shows on TV) and who also spent a small fortune redubbing the entire 200 episode show, didn't feel like throwing more money into the fire restoring said masters since they felt that if they were restored, it would hurt sales for the new Viz dub.

I mean, it's a show for little girls, I can't see why it would have nudity. It wasn't even really that believable when I was a kid.

I remember another story from the Sub vs Dub days on Usenet.

There would always be some claim that the original manga creator of the anime totally said that the English dub is awesome and better than the Japanese version. This was said for several different titles, but I only specifically remember "You're Under Arrest" being mentioned.

I would ask for proof of where this was said and I'd usually get no answer or some really vague one about being in some magazine, but they can't remember which.

I actually got to see the Japanese version of the movie recently. I didn't expect it to be R-rated (the movie we got is already a horrific bloodbath)... I was just curious if it would have different music.

(It doesn't, BTW.... making it probably the first time Japan got a version that shows why Americans love this franchise).

Speaking of music... this is crossing over with video games, but I recall someone telling me once that the Japanese version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 has a different soundtrack. Sadly, it does not.

Its believable, because plenty of little girl shows do indeed have nudity. I can't comment on why its there because I'm not a mind-reader, but being aimed at girls isn't a guarantee it'll be missing. In fact it almost makes it more likely.

I'll take your word on that.

It's from episodes 101-105 (I forget which one, IIRC 103 or 104).

Those episodes form a nasty series finale arc (which were skipped by BOTH dubs of the series due to the content) that was the stuff of legends growing up; a gory, violent fucked up ending where Katze turns out to be a hermaphrodite/trans that involuntarily changes from male to female every year, Joe finding out he's dying, Joe getting tortured in graphic fashion when he tries to suicide run Katze rather than die in a hospital bed, and and Katze an-heroing himself when his master betrays him and the vague ending and pointing out that in the end he was a transgender freak not future ruler of the world as he kills himself, with it implying Joe may or may not have died.

There were numerous people not just being hyperbolic, or even speculating but outright stating as a fact that they'd heard from somebody who'd heard from somebody that the makers of the two-episode OVA Dragon Half animation were indeed "on drugs" when they produced it and the director and/or members of the staff or the creator of the manga was arrested for drugs which in turn led to the OVA adaption being limited to two eps.. My understanding is that the then-president of Kadokawa Shoten, was sent to jail for possession of cocaine, although whether he did any "real" time is in doubt, but something narcotics-related caused a reshuffling at the top of Kadokawa.

In the end it was just another case of an 90s-era OVA series not having enough sales to continue the series to completion.
