Ever hear any anime "urban legends" growing up?

So one way the internet has made things boring is nowadays if you hear a rumor, you can just go on Google and check it.

Recently I was watching videos about video game urban legends (Stop n' Swop and all that) but I'm in more of an anime mood so I wondered if anyone ever had similar experiences but with anime?

I think the most common one we all heard is "Insert Show Here had more sex/blood/rock n' roll in the original Japanese." Sometimes this was true, most of the time not.

I also recall hearing a lot of "in Japan there's way more episodes." Often this was true but in at least one case--Devil Hunter Yohko--this sadly turned out to be false.

Another common one is "so-and-so cartoon is actually a dubbed anime." This was more credible when I was young and stupid, and to be fair I can see people watching Thundercats or Inspector Gadget and thinking its totally anime. The real reason this used to be interesting is in the 90s you could pretend there was a Japanese version that was totally like your best fanfic come to life. Nowadays though we have the example of Mutant Turtles: Legend of the Super Mutants and Transformers Headmasters to show us that usually Japanese versions of American properties just kinda suck.

anyway, did you ever hear any Anime Urban Legends?
 
Dragon Ball AF and the t.rex skeleton appearing in pokemon's....whatever movie spring to mind. I think the most common myth is everyone swearing like an angry sailor thanks to all those awful fansubs that took words like "kisame" as vulgar as possible.

Oh, and gundam wing being carefully planned fujoshit bait.
 
It used to be common to hear people claim sailor moon was an adult series in Japan or was originally an adult anime or manga, which is not true. Dragon Ball AF is also a classic.

Minky Momo itself is something that sounds like a bullshit creepypasta. Starts as a cutesy magical girl series but then near the end takes a dark turn and ends with the main character getting hit by a truck? And every time that finale aired on TV, a disaster hit Japan? The only thing missing is otherworldly screams and hyper-realistic blood.

And yet its what actually happened.

The part about kids jumping out windows and falling to their deaths reminds me of a similar urban legend around the black-and-white Adventures of Superman TV series, where apparently a bunch of kids thought they could fly if they put on a cape, and it led to mass accidental deaths.... allegedly. This Urban Legend has been debunked AFAIK.
 
There's that one anime when you watch it you get a phone call, and then seven days later you troon out. Oh wait, that's every one of them.
 
That anime where some girls are trapped in a bathroom and kill themselves in horrific ways.

Isn't this sorta true? There's the Porygon episode that triggered a bunch of epileptic kids because of the flashing lights, which were Pikachu's fault. It's the whole reason why you hardly hear about Porygon.
 
I heard there was an episode of Dragon Ball Z that never aired outside Japan where Tien Shinhan has one of his ribs removed so that he can perform a new sit up technique.

Isn't this sorta true? There's the Porygon episode that triggered a bunch of epileptic kids because of the flashing lights, which were Pikachu's fault. It's the whole reason why you hardly hear about Porygon.

it's pretty rough, a _lot_ more epileptastic than a lot of 90s flicker effects, it's an ongoing series of sequences of RED BLUE RED BLUE explosions

A bunch of American cartoons were animated by Japanese studios. Inspector Gadget specifically was done by the studio that animated Lupin III.

Inspector Gadget in fact came about because of a failed Lupin III spinoff, so it (along with Transformers) is one of the more understandible cases of "this is actually anime."

That said, the problem I had with a lot of these arguments is they tended to rely on there just being a few Japanese names listed in the credits, usually the animation studio. Which always felt to me as a really minor thing. The distinction between "anime" and "cartoon" comes down to more than just who did the animation--who actually wrote the thing counts as well.
 
DBZ had tons of urban legends. You would actually see fake super saiyan forms in otherwise fairly legitimate magazines. When the Pokemon anime was coming out in the US you'd see publications (online and in print) mixing up the show with Pokemon Adventures which freaked some parents out considering the manga can be super weird.
