The older I get the more I realize that the only people in the military (or the police) who actually know how to use a gun either handle them regularly because their MOS requires it, or like any other gun enthusiast who never served, like guns as a hobby.

If you've ever watched your local sheriff's office "qualify" you would be shocked how shitty the vast majority are with pistols, barely keep rounds on a full size silhouette target at 10 yards bad with a Glock 19. It has given me a lot of contempt for authority when the people who are trusted to use force on the job can't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside, and aren't fucking forced to fix it. They should all have a single round like Barney Fife, yet they all carry a full loadout, and aren't even responsible for the rounds downrange if they're legally justified in loosing them off.

If you're ever talking with a cop, ask them if they know what the weaver stance is or the Bindon concept are. Most of them aren't trained beyond "line up sights and pull trigger"

What (some) deaf people don't like is hearing aids/cochlear implants, they view it as a solving something that isn't a problem. It's a very small community either way. The guy was a huge cornhole player and this was a deaf-oriented cornhole event.

Maine Police Say Lewiston Suspect WAS Prohibited From Possessing Guns

Is anybody else getting the feeling that this is going to turn out to be another one of those situatiins where the Military knew he was an unstable lunatic, declared him unfit to possess a weapon. But neglected to inform the civilian authorities? Wasn't there a similar case with an Air Force guy a few years back?

There are a few things that have been said about this guy, that leave some rather glaring holes in the narative. Holes that would seem to be government authorities.

- "he started hearing voices and threatened to shoot up the National Guard" Okay, how is this known? How did he enter the system? Did he come in seeking help? Did police intervene? Something on a military base? Perhaps he was going squirrely at his VA visit?

- "He was comitted in the summer 2023 for 2 weeks." So he spent 2 weeks in the nut hut within the past 90 days? That's interesting in a lot of ways. 2 weeks in an unusual length of stay. I notice that the way the authorities say it, it is meant to imply involuntary committal. Without saying that. 2 weeks has the odor of a voluntary stay about it. So once again did this guy reach out for help before going all Falling Down? If not why was he kicked loose after 2 weeks? Where was this stay? Who treated and evaluated him?

Honestly I more suspect that he hasn't gone all mountain man. He probably wandered off into the woods and blew his own brains out. It's Maine. It's more than possible they would never find the body.

But there is still a lot in this one that they are going out of their way to not say.

Yep, after that happened was when the fire was lit under their asses & they finally got around to implementing the NIIA, since nothing had been done prior and it made them look bad; that was also when VA started dumping mental health records into NICS as well.

Also from @Helvetia APNews post (Big ups), it states all victims have been identified, ranging from 14-76. Doesn't break it down as to who was what age, but I know there were arguments earlier about if kids were present, there was at least the single 14 year old we were aware of.

I'm still of the opinion he had at least more than one firearm with him, so he could have ditched the rifle used in the main shooting and taken a 2nd one or a handgun. They still think He's armed and dangerous even after finding his car.

As for mass shooters running, often times they don't try to escape, the only other case I can think of off the top of my head was Parkland where the shooter snuck out alongside fleeing students.

No idea what Maine's laws are but from what I remember it's fairly standard for an initial involuntary hold to be capped at 72 hours and then upgraded to a maximum of two weeks if deemed necessary, e.g. California penal codes 5150 and 5250 iirc.
