The most cringeworthy movie of 2018, hands down.

I find this funny because I went to see this movie with someone I know. We had a bet, I said if it was a shitty movie I would win a buck from them and if it was a good movie they would win a buck from me. Sadly, nobody won the bet that day because the movie was just cringe.

I saw it recently and thought it was alright.

Terribly dated due to all the memes and websites they use, but I thought they way they portrayed the internet was nice. I was surprised there werent really any villains in the movie? I thought either Shanks or Yes would have been a badie but nah, they just help Ralph.

I really loved the first movie and thought it was a great at adding videogames references without being overbearing and dated. Its a movie I could see myself watching every now and then.

This one though? Not really, loved the animation but a lot of stuff were so pointless. Like the ads guy or even Ralph trying to be the next meme king. And the princess scenes were too on the nose for it to be really funny, but the new clothes they wore was pretty nice.

Im not sure what the next movie would be, but I hope they focus instead on videogames and not internet memes.

Sorry I'm late to the thread, but has anyone noticed that both movies are about Vanellope despite being named after Ralph?

Maybe it should be titled Wreck-It Ralph: Fury Road

At least the first film made an attempt to have both Ralph and Vanellope's stories intertwined. Granted, it had four main characters to juggle in Ralph, Vanellope, Felix, and Calhoun, with King Candy/Turbo as the antagonist; meanwhile the second film shoved half the cast so far into the back seat they're in the trunk, and the front seat passengers weren't even paying attention to the road.

It was alright.

Does Mr. Litwak live in the arcade or something? Not sure why he needs wi-fi plugged in the same surge protector as the arcade cabinets.
It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up doing just that, probably gave himself a nice little section behind the arcade to live in otherwise. Such conveniences like that aren't uncommon for some places I've seen before. Usually it's the Ma & Pa types that do it.

Marketing says Asia likes Vanellope more. In fact the movie is called Shugā rasshu (Sugar Rush) in Japan. The second movie is called Sugar Rush - Online.

Oh fuck, I almost forgot about that. With Hollywood appealing more to the Asian market, that could explain why Vanellope has a bigger role than Ralph. Outside of the obvious feminist angle they were going with her.

No touchie if you haven't seen HTTYD 3.

My brother pointed out this morning that HTTYD 3 and WIR 2 are quite similar in plot (best friends leaving and having to let them go/give them their space), but that HTTYD 3 did it much better and much more emotional if only because we could legit believe in the friendship between Toothless and Hiccup thanks to the previous two films and the TV series, and the motive behind their parting made sense. That's not present between Ralph and Vanellope, like you can't really believe they had a friendship for the six years they were together (Hiccup and Toothless were together for six years, too) and the motive behind their parting benefits more, or at least leans more toward agreeing with Vanellope than it does for Ralph--meanwhile it benefited both Hiccup and Toothless while still keeping that pain.

Another thing that's important to note is Vanellope left out of a selfish reason, even if it's understandable that she was bored and needed something new--well, it would be understandable if she wasn't a video game character, that is. But her decision hasn't been shown to affect the others very well, if at all--also the movie just forgot she became the president and therefore needed to govern a kingdom, unless there was an election that happened off-screen. That's the other thing, she's supposed to be a leader/figure head, but then she abandons everyone to pursue her own interests. Like it's negative on the surface, but nothing else happens outside of Ralph having his freak-out over losing his only (but Fix-it Felix???) friend. Toothless left for a good reason: the call of the wild happened. Hiccup was fully supportive of him, too, but he forgot that Toothless, while tamed, wasn't meant to stay at home forever, and he realized that when he and Astrid stumbled upon the hidden world and saw how mated life was affecting him (like I think it was established in that scene that Toothless and the Light Fury were officially mates, was just the next logical step after their flight of romance). And the dragons all leaving was out of the goodness of the hearts of Berk to ensure they're protected and safe from the hunters that were still out there.

I'm not suggesting that Wreck-It Ralph should have benefited from a TV series to bridge the gap and made Vanellope's decision to go Turbo (???!!??!??) natural, but it should've made sense on a narrative and character level. Supposedly that's what Calhoun's character arc was supposed to be like in the film, but lol had to cut it for time. And HTTYD 3 had a few subplots going on at once that made it muddled a bit, but it still had a strong ending that wrapped everything up in a pretty bow.

But it's like DreamWorks is/was the studio whose purpose was to take chances outside of shitting on Disney, who haven't been taking chances themselves since Treasure Planet.

How To Train Your Dragon 3 outclasses Ralph Breaks the Internet in every way possible. Loved it.

The HTTYD trilogy is super refereshing in this day and age when it comes to animated movies. Not a single goddamn pop culture reference in ANY of the movies, no "meta" or "self-aware" jokes to make excuses for bad writing, etc. These movies told a straightforward, well-planned, and earnest story that had a fitting and satisfying ending.

The only time you'll see pop culture/self-aware jokes involving HTTYD are in the custom-made fan-art T-shirts, such as this print that I stumbled upon last night (and is probably being sold at a Hot Topic somewhere):

Far as I can tell, WIR hasn't had the same treatment. Though honestly, Toothless is much more marketable (and original) than Ralph.

The marketing for Wreck-It-Ralph 2 was kinda genius though. Just slap the Princesses on everything, and it gets all of the grown women to go see it and buy the "pajama sets" that the princesses wear in the movie. That's really the only merch that's been selling for the movie, I think.

Disney will shit on the princesses in the movie, but when they actually want to make money, they'll make excuses to sell Disney Princess anything.

Call me crazy, but that almost sounds like an abusive relationship they got going on there. ? ? ?

It's probably a good thing Ralph 2 didn't win anything, tho, and even then didn't make enough money as Disney hoped. Because you know when a Disney product is popular they go out of their way to cash in on them, and in an alternative timeline we would've heard about 10 spin-offs featuring the princesses, a TV show with that ugly CGI TV animation, and what else. It could not even be something genuinely cute or funny, but it would be the same crap as @StarkRavingMad said, more feminist jokes and how all the princesses from Snow White to Belle were r.etarded slutty damsels and the like. And womanchildren princess stans would've adore it, because Aurora gets focus or "finally those slutty Esmeralda and Meg are nowhere to be found!" (some of them really hate Esmeralda and Meg's guts, mind boggling honestly. What crimes did they commit aside from not being princesses?)

It's sad, really. Disney has over a canon of a thousand characters, but they waste all their time and attention focusing on this group of 13, some of them which aren't the best Disney characters ever created, sad really.
