Worst Grinds/Time Sinks In Gaming - Achievements, Reputatons And Cosmetics Galore

Achievements for multiplayer modes shouldn't be a thing period, the player base will inevitably move on and the servers will eventually shut down, and it seems like every dev goes out of their way to make them as retarded and long as possible as a fuck you.

In the beginning of the Achievement/Trophy era, they were used to keep players from hopping to the next thing as quickly. Now we just have GAAS to do that, but ridiculous trophies for online still exist.

Currently, a grind I've put off is from Crash Team Rumble. There's one last achievement I need for 100% completion that requires to reach the level cap for one character. CTR is an online-only title with a gameplay loop that is character based, so all its achievements are situational. I've managed to get all but the level cap achievement through consistent sessions, so that's good.

Aren’t all of them practically the same types of variants?
It gets better - legendaries generally have fixed stats, or a much tighter spread than all other normal guns, so it's literally pointless to grind gyri off your brain on highest difficulty. but then you have the console peasantry of course.

And that's my point. Artificially bloating game time by hinting to mouth-breathing player where easter eggs are is the gayest gayming feature to emerge from 2010s, and all the people obsessed with them are OCD fags.

You guys know you don't have to 100% games to enjoy them right? Nobody is forcing you to do every grind or get every achievement.
But the option is there and provided by the developer to 100% based on preset criteria. And in some cases, that's not even true.

I remember Middle Earth: Shadow of War received pushback for gatekeeping its final act through tedious grinding. I think they been patched that out, but still.

Speaking of easter eggs, I want to add Call of Duty's Zombies into this. Zombies has easter eggs quests that require cryptic puzzle solving and expert coordination/communication to complete. Don't forget that since Zombies is a horde based game mode, you have to attend to being open for attack.

But that's fine since a little extra thing hidden in an extra mode is whatever to everyone but people who master and get bored of that mode enough to start exploring its nooks and crannies.

Achievements are a optional fun thing to do if you happen to really like a game and they should provide extra challenges and cool rewards if you do them. I agree they shouldn't overlap with easter eggs tho, those should be a secret fun thing in itself.

Any RPG or metroidvania where 100% means “find every piece of common treasure in every bumfuck corner of every bumfuck map”.
I don't think completionism counts as grinding. Grinding means doing something repeatedly, so often in fact that it turns leisure time into a mechanical, joylessly dull activity. If you're talking about 100% a map, that's just exploration and completing a game for the sake of perfecting it.
An example of a grind; in Final Fantasy II, each individual spell has to be cast many times over for it to gain a higher level. That goes for things like basic attack spells like fire or thunder, as well as goddamned support ones like cure, shell or barrier.

It being an MMO probably means it goes with the territory, but FFXIV has achievements tied to the archaic 'levequest' system it has, for doing up to 5,000 of each* type (battle/crafting/gathering) quest, along with achievements for completing unique ones for specific crafting classes etc
The grind is in the fact that the quests are gated behind a daily allowance that regenerates 6/day and caps at a banked 100. Some bullshit like 8+ years.

Última edición:
Drakengard, absolute hell to 100% and get the endings. There are people who defend how vapid it is by trying to claim it's some 4D super deep mind fuckery Yoko Taro put on the player to convey themes of the game. The actual reality is it's just an awful designed, grindy, boring, and unfun game that is only notable by it's shocking story/character elements and having a spin off that is actually good.

its not the case that he did that on purpose that time.

but its absolutely something he WOULD do.

Unlocking all the ship upgrades in Helldivers 2.

It is the whole reason I've come to hate the "collect color-coded difficulty-gated widgets to spend on unlocking stuff" thing in games like HD2 and Space Marine II. At least Space Marine II otherwise plays a LOT better than it did on launch, and with a ton of extra free content now to boot.

I automated the grind for SP in Blue Dragon with a shoelace pulling both sticks on the pad to the right. Going from level 1 on a job to 50 takes a couple of hours, but you have to check in and press A now and then. After 50, you don't get new skills, so you rack up a level every 40 minutes or so in the little alcove in the first section of the Laser Field by casting Field Barrier and just running in circles while enemies spawn and get nuked on contact.

Speaking of MMO grinds, the Honor System grind in Vanilla World of Warcraft was an extreme grindfest to the point that people that did the grind to Rank 14 (the highest Honor Rank) were THE definition of no-lifers.

The Honor System is so archaic that even trying to calculate how long it will take to get to Rank 14 is extremely complicated. And the Rank Grind is purely a grind and has nothing to do with player skill.

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've intentionally done any optional objectives in any video game. I'm utterly mystified by people who willingly take a game played in their free time and turn it into a chore.

Reputation grinds in WoW. If you know, you know. I remember the Outland ones like Netherwing being especially annoying to grind.
Bonus points if grinding a reputation to the max is non-benificial for you in the end (looking at you, Bloodsail Buccaneers).
