Through CRISPR genetic modification, a released population of female mosquitoes have a gene to grow male proboscises (which cannot penetrate human skin but can still eat the same way males do--consuming plant nectar). Since these females cannot acquire blood, they cannot produce eggs effectively making them sterile.
The gene has been released into wild mosquito populations to reduce or completely eliminate mosquitoes in specific regions. The gene does not always appear in offspring, so it only serves to mitigate their population but the end goal is to truly make certain species of mosquitoes extinct. The ones which carry diseases. The aim is to end diseases such as dengue, zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, malaria, etc.
Malaria is responsible for more human deaths throughout human history than any other disease, war, or illness and it is spread by mosquitoes. No animal solely relies on mosquitoes for food. The extinction of mosquitoes is as distressing as removing cherry tomatoes from your salad.
This article is an interesting read because it also talks about how mosquitoes have influenced human evolution. How completely unrelated diseases behave differently as a result of adaptations we have made because of mosquitoes and malaria.

You don't even need to exterminate them all, only a fraction of mosquito species transmit human diseases. Just getting rid of the single species Aedes aegypti would do a ton.
