I feel ambivalent about wasps. If they're outside where they're supposed to be, fine. If the wasps in the nest in my attic STAY in my attic, fine. But you come into MY HOME, in MY BED, and act SURPRISED that I'm there, you die.

I know mosquitos are a food source for a great many animals that are more important to the ecosystem (birds, spiders, wasps?, frogs, etc) but I could've sworn there was a study done by biologists that said "yeah we could wipe them all out by creating a super sexy male mosquito that shoots modified swimmers that make all the females and their offspring sterile and eventually kill them all with minimal consequences to the ecosystem" but there's always that lingering fear it's going to be like Mao Zedong's gigantic fuckup.

as with any animal, I assume that mosquitoes are connected to an uncountable number of other animals in a bunch of non-obvious ways, so removing them wholesale is like removing a block from the center of the jenga tower. will it affect nothing? will the whole thing collapse? will the tower still stand but be noticeably less stable? a bunch of the blocks are already missing or partially dislodged. you can study the tower all you want and make an educated guess, but you don't really know until you remove it, and after that you can't easily put it back without potentially fucking it up even more.

there are a bunch of considerations like, removing that much biomass from the environment requires it to be replaced with something so you don't destroy a vital food source. maybe there's another type of bug that will fill the void, maybe mosquito predators will simply change their diets, idk. it's possible that it would be fine but I don't think fucking with nature on such a large scale is a great idea.

That's a load of bull. Humans are the CHINA NUMBUH ONE species killer on the planet. If we actually put our minds to it and threw caution to the wind we could eradicate mosquitos just fine.

But we're held back by other concerns like "ethics" and "biodiversity" and "morals" and "3rd Order Consequences".

- A fuck ton of DDT w/ additional pesticides to nuke the resistant stragglers.
- Pie in the sky specially bred cordyceps strain targeted at the bitey mcfuckers
- Poisoning our own blood
- Finally (and I really like this one) we overbreed dragonflies in captivity and then release them into the wild en masse in regular intervals.

But again, we SHOULDN'T do this because I like frogs.
