When they present their opinion on a particular subject to you, ask follow up questions.
A midwit usually won't think about anything beyond the surface level so there will be no answer other than making shit up, getting angry and namecalling.

I think it has to do with intelligence.

But, of course, a midwit would not understand that.
Man I can't even understand English you think I know what intelligence is? *yawn*

I guess I am looking for indicators of intellect as well as what people define it themselves. For example, midwit is used negatively, and most would not describe their loved one as a midwit, but the more neutral "average." Kiwis might associate some cultural things around it too rather than intellect alone, or might only classify certian groups (like journalists) as midwits.

look in the mirror OP
I'm not a midwit... I'm retarded.

I know what I am. :(

Definitely this. They parrot shit they heard or read somewhere but know nothing about except what some, most likely, other midwit wrote or said about it. Key identifier. See every single reddit post in existence for examples.

Well, aren't you the little intellect yourself?

Asking questions and trying to understand driving factor behind reasoning is a sign of intellect in my book.

Maybe the premise is false. Are you asking what makes a midwit or what makes people call you one? There might be a significant delta between the two.

It's me. Hi OP.
I'm definitely a midwit, too.
Turned from "what is a midwit" to "Midwits anonymous.
Well, aren't you the little intellect yourself?
I tend to be called smart, but almost always with the "ass" or "alec" directly following behind. :smug:

Asking questions and trying to understand driving factor behind reasoning is a sign of intellect in my book.
I like that. Curiousity is always great.

That's a great fuckin' question. I think I'm asking both since I kind of get the idea, but kind of don't. As Tablet County said, "Midwit is whoever disagrees with me." Like, here's what I got so far.

Midwit can mean...
  • Someone who pretends or believes they are intellectual but aren't
  • People who are smart on paper, college educated, but are not as smart as you would think.
  • People who repeat what others in their social group say blindly, sheep, followers, etc.
  • A synonym for NPCs, people with no thoughts
  • When you can't call your opponent a complete retard because they know big words
  • Someone who buys funko pops and watches marvel movies blindly
  • Someone who disagrees and is not as enlightened as me, a super enligthened human, on the subject
It's enough of a broad topic that it's something to discuss. Like, are midwits easy to tell apart from normal people of average or above average intellect? Are they the same thing? What's the fuzzy line between mid and dimwit? Is it specific or is it whatever it means at the moment?

Also, What do we call smart people with no original thoughts? I just go with "retarded".

Someone who is not intelligent enough, yet also not outrageously retarded enough, to develop independent original thought.
That's such a big gap!

  • Someone who pretends or believes they are intellectual but aren't
  • People who are smart on paper, college educated, but are not as smart as you would think.
It's a question of perspective. Whether intellectually educated people are better than others can only be solved by results vs expenditure. Stupid people will find you smart or dumb depending, same goes the other way. Being intellectual is such a broad statement. How do you pitch a top philosopher against a guy with a plumbing franchise worth 50M?
People who repeat what others in their social group say blindly, sheep, followers, etc.
Yes. Dimwitted.
A synonym for NPCs, people with no thoughts
Idk about that. Seems the average person in that most issues don't affect the larger population to the extent they do people who are in the depth of it. Subjective and will vary on the topic. We're all NPCs in some topics, if not most in some cases.
When you can't call your opponent a complete retard because they know big words
Weak. Calling someone names is the last resort of the idiot when they can't manage to break you down with their own logic.

I misread this initially, but it's a gift when people try to sound smart but don't understand numbers, especially in politics. You can dick slap them so fast.

Still, showing your opponent to be wrong rather than retarded will always go so much longer. Just destroy them on every single thing they say. People will draw this conclusion for themselves. You don't need to insult them once. Actually be nice, it will make it even worse.

If you can't understand them, then neither can anyone. Shine by your knowledge of the same metrics in a way most can actually understand.
Someone who buys funko pops and watches marvel movies blindly
Yes. Unequivocally a midwit unless they show profit on it.
Someone who disagrees and is not as enlightened as me, a super enligthened human, on the subject
It depends. Nobody holds absolute truth. Someone intolerant might call you a midwit because they are blinded by ideology they are mostly right about, or they might just be right or wrong in absolute.

I would say someone who has the brain power to disagree rather than dismiss already shows intellect worth considering. ASSUMING the debate is not fucking retarded obviously, like fetishistic or deeply autistic. Then agree to disagree is the only sign of intelligence.

Última edición:
Remember, these are all the ways I have heard it used. So I don't have a strong stance, except for one.

How do you pitch a top philosopher against a guy with a plumbing franchise worth 50M?
While we should always shit on philosophy degrees, in life you'd compare him more to another entrepreneur who owns a business or anyone in pipe-related engineering. The philosophy guy should be compared more to the English and religious majors, and still, I rather have the later two than the philosophy guy. As you said, we're all NPCs in something. Teaching more people about schools of thought, arguments, huge questions humans have in life, changing perspectives on how we view things - you want a philosophy major. Fixing my pipes? Plumber. Arranging a floral bouquet for a wedding? Likely, neither.

I think this type of midwit insult is interesting because it means someone is trying to appear as more than average or a peer and is actually not as smart as they think they are. The overestimation on either the midwit or the person dubbing someone a midwit.

Yes. Dimwitted.
Then why not say dimwitted? :tomgirl:

When I hear people use NPC, they're usually yelling at someone who has no thoughts, just programming. Or calling them stupid. It's another one that's slightly blurry but more related to the idea that the person being called an NPC is basically a robot, but a mostly useless one put in as decoration or quest givers to the "player characters" of the world.

Weak. Calling someone names is the last resort of the idiot when they can't manage to break you down with their own logic.
But walking up to your opponent, dropping a slur, then leaving without elaboration is the Kiwi Farms way...

If you can't understand them, then neither can anyone. Shine by your knowledge of the same metrics in a way most can actually understand.
That's the spirit. :)

Yes. Unequivocally a midwit unless they show profit on it.
This is currently my only concrete interpretation of midwit. I am glad I have at least one definition down.

I would say someone who has the brain power to disagree rather than dismiss already shows intellect worth considering. ASSUMING the debate is not fucking retarded obviously, like fetishistic or deeply autistic. Then agree to disagree is the only sign of intelligence.
On the other hand, someone who has the brain power to disagree could be a contrarian who has no real objections aside from not liking you/something related to your stance/something unrelated. Like, Lily Peet/Jerry Peet heaps praise on a show if an enemy hates it, and vehemently hates a show if an enemy likes it. He'd be lucky to be ever called a midwit. Hell, he's less a dimwit and more of a fuckwith, but that's another matter.
