Neat so you get a laptop that had its screen sawn off and installed SteamOS on it. I get that the RAM/SSD prices are absolutely fucked (my workstation that I bought in 2024 is $1000+ more expensive thanks to AI madness) but even with its current price shipping base unit without a controller is an atrocity. If you intend on having it as a 'console' why would you jew out on the controller?

At least I hope they won't fuck up the pricing on Steam Frame. :optimistic:

"All the Valve fanboys will still buy it!"

I'm a Valve fanboy who REALLY wants one and I cannot justify spending over $1000 on this thing. It's DoA.

Haha I remember thinking I'd maybe get this if it was around $700 or so, $1050 for the base version is insane
The ps5 pro is a better deal on virtue that every modern game for the never 3-4 years will be optimised to run on it. The Steam machine does not have that privilege. The price to power ratio puts it in such a awkward zone, that makes it hard to understand who this appeal to. It's too weak for Triple-A games, and it's too expensive to be a cheap Console like PC for Indie's and emulation.

data centers definitely fucked this over. I'm working with sourcing for industrial computing parts and the prices are beyond sky-high at the moment. As much pulling power as Valve has, they have nowhere near that power that the big tech companies have. This could probably be salvaged if they just postponed it until the data center mania cools down. Releasing it at these specs and these prices now is beyond disastrous.

I sent this to my irl friends thinking they would dunk on it. They all started making excuses for it.

I fucking hate goyim.
I mean, the excuse that "all prices for SSD and RAM have skyrocketed" is valid.
I'd imagine this machine would go for 679$ 5 years ago if the prices had behaved normally.

What I really do not get is how Valve can release this piece of shit when it fails to meet min spec requirements for AAA+ titles that released 3 years ago.
If you cannot achieve a reasonable price in the low price segment, at least create a box for 1499$ that can run everything for the next 5+ years.

This fails on all levels.

I can't understand trying to excuse this thing. I have several hand-me-down/tossed out laptops that are nearly a decade old that aren't that much weaker than this thing. You'd need like 5 of them stacked together to even compete with the fuckin' pre-builts from a handful of years ago. Just save up a few hundred more and you can get something a universe of power ahead of this fuckin' cube.

Better luck on attempt number 3 alyx.

Anyone complaining about this price has not tried to build a PC worth a shit in the last 3 years.
You can throw together something way better than this for a thousand bucks, granted you'll have to go DDR4 not DDR5 but you'll have a proper CPU and at least 10gb of VRAM.

On the couch side of things, The GabeCube costs double the competition, just an ass proposition. If you already have a good PC just get the cheapest HP elitedesk you can find and use Moonlight/Sunshine. Say what you will about the PS5 it actually can play games at 4k, and since most TVs these days are 4k that's a must for couch gaming.

According to @LinusTech and IGN the original prices before the rampocalypse were supposed to be around $750 for 512gb and $950 for 2TB

Sigh... there goes the dream. Guess I either keep waiting for the AI crash or bite the bullet and build a new one. I only want to play at 1080p resolution at most...
