It's more of not having protection against scalpers. A good chunk of sales of everything from video game controllers to concert tickets are through resellers which are nothing more than legalized scalpers. And organized scalping companies can flood purchase orders through bots before the average consumer can even start filling out their credit card or address information.

I can't decide if this will flop because its base model is over $1k when the average person has no money and if it'll sell out immediately because the price increased Steam Decks did and people still like Valve.

Pricing fucking sucks but the upside is that SteamOS just updated so you can make your own Steam Machine with any parts you got laying around. Still limited to AMD GPU, but Valve is working on getting Nvidia to work just as well.
