I am reminded of one of the most fundamental memories of my life.

I am wearing unadorned BDUs, I am standing in the late summer heat of South Carolina on Fort Jackson. Ive just been handed a bayonet. I am told to affix that Bayonet to my M16A1 rifle, and to then repeatedly stab it into the dirt of South Carolina.

And I am ordered to chant " what makes the green grass grow, BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD! Blood Makes the Green Grass grow!" Then we did the Bayonet course, where we got to ram that blade into target dummies while screaming like maniacs.

It was with much anger I learned that the Obama Administration removed this ritual from basic Army training. It was claimed that it was done so because the Bayonet was obsolete.

I know different. It is the most vivid memory of my basic training. I will also not forget the chant. Blood. Blood. Blood makes the green grass grow. I know why the Obama administration got rid of Bayonet training. You know why they did too.

But we still remember. You cannot separate the American people from the Green Grass. We dont need a stupid training ritual to know what makes it grow.
