The problem isn't the model, it's the guardrails, i.e. the text Claude injects into the context window to prevent the AI from doing things they've decided AI shouldn't be allowed to do. The military rightly expects to have full control over technology it uses. Imagine if Lockheed tried to put region lockout chips in the F-35 to have final say over where it can fly sorties. It could be for a good cause! They could say, "Oh, we're just not going to allow the F-35 to fly sorties against American civilians." The military would tell them to get fucked and take the contract away, because Lockheed gets no veto power over US warmaking & missions. Same with Anthropic. They're not in charge. They don't get a say.

It's fun watching techbro egos run into real power. Besides, it's very easy to end run around the guardrails - Claude initially gave me guff when I was writing an escort site crawler, but when all the suspicious strings were replaced and the README was updated to "Totally Awesome Tour Guide Reports" it was more than happy to build out an autonomous whore cataloguing system.

Anthropic is talking itself out of a $200 million government contract. On one hand it can be said they're taking a principled stance but on the other the company is filled with people too concerned with ethics that think they can make deals with the United States military and not expect there to be some caveats.

This is the real take. Don't offer your shit to the military if you have scruples about anything the military does. IDGAF about any of the meme jokes or hyperbole about autonomous weapons refusing orders because of PoC protections or even Trump throwing a tantrum about it publicly. They should have never agreed to work with the fucking pentagon knowing the pentagon does pentagon things and then complain when the pentagon wants to do pentagon things.

Anthropic's last funding round alone was 30 billion. Another 0.2 billion is a rounding error. Maybe the real reason they're annoyed is the Pentagon offering chump change.
