Probably not very unusual, but Unto Ashes doing a beautiful cover of Don't Fear the Reaper.
NoMeansNo doing an a capella version of Forward to Death by Dead Kennedys
Kramers weird cover of Insight by Dead Kennedys on the same tribute album
Original
And two The Trooper covers, first by Japanese beat boxer Dokaka
And by Gerry, the handfarts guy. He actually made it onto Jimmy Kimmel once doing Bohemian Rhapsody.

I'm not sure where else to post this. It's not a cover, it's the original demo recorded by one of this song's writers. I'd start a new thread, but idk how successful an "Unusual demos" thread would be.

Martin Page's demo of We Built This City

Shostakovich's adaptation of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"

Jim O'Rourke's cover of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman is something else. The fact that it's more than 30 minutes is unusual in itself, but it's genuinely beautiful with how well Jim uses ambience throughout, focusing more on the soundscapes more than a "faithful cover" to Fast Car.
