And despite Deltarune being the more grandiose story, it definitely holds far less edge than Undertale. 4 chapters in and not a single character has really been at risk of dying.

I never really thought about this until recently, it would probably be jarring for someone who played the first 4 chapters of Deltarune to pick up Undertale and see how much more death is in it.

This might be cope, but I think Berdly being not dead is purely to cover if you abort the weird route in chapter 4. It's one thing yo add some dialogue for a fucked up arm and another to account for a dead schoolmate in the "standard route". If chapter 5 really does go off the rails like the zelda segments made it out to be, the bird is very likely toast as well as most of town.
