Columbine was like a white version of Michael Brown or Trayvon Martin or George Floyd, the facts don't support the causes whatsoever but people can sympathize a lot with shitheads for whatever reason. people immediately sympathized with the shooters within seconds of hearing about the crime and it leading to anti-bullying initiatives probably did help avoid more attacks. i had a professor call it the straight version of Matthew Shepard, he wasn't the unfortunate soul he was painted as but the laws passed in response definitely helped the ones that were.

I wasn't talking about in-person bullying. I'm talking about how someone is portrayed posthumously. It's the attention you put on the perpetrator after the fact, not what you think a perpetrator is going to be beforehand.

There is, and has always been, a need for recognition and attention from people. Crazy as it may seem, people are willing to die in order to get it. Case in point the Björk Stalker, the face paint, the video, the suicide; the motivation was pretty clear, he wanted not just Björk's attention, he wanted as much attention as possible so his death became a performance, he wanted to be found dead after he killed Björk with a bomb (he failed). He wanted attention and fame (albeit infamy) he felt he couldn't get through other means. An extreme act of attention whoring by someone with severe inadequacies.

I am not saying it is sane, but certain types of people will go to great lengths for attention, especially if they have flaws, resentments, and that general feeling they're not getting what they feel they deserve. Nearly every single one of these types of people has a fucking banal manifesto they think is important that people "need to hear", the behavior of people like that has always been about attention.

Yet despite this, there is one type of attention nobody wants, which is being laughed at, being made a pariah by becoming a laughingstock. People break themselves trying not to have it (look at Rekeita, Ralph and Idubbz, we are a lolcow site after all, so I'll use them as examples). Not being the focus of that attention, even posthumously, would be IMO a pretty big deterrent for those willing to kill others for infamy's sake. People want attention that takes them seriously (even if it is hate or fear); they don't want attention that paints them as a fool, even after they're dead.
