The reailty is that it was a gamble on evolving demographics. The Super Bowl in 2016 had Hispanic viewers at about 10% of the total. By 2024 that number was 14%. Growth of several million and from a population that already has lower viewership indicates the potential for the market to increase, and significantly. Something like only 2% of the viewers came from the Hispanic broadcast but if you cater to them you might improve those numbers, and many that identify as Hispanic watch the English broadcast anyways.
The fact that Bad Bunny ran out with the American flag leading every other western hemisphere country at the end of the performance highlights this. It was a relatively milquetoast message about togetherness and highlighted a people that, like it or not, are American. I found it to be beautiful and hardly what I would consider a “political message.” Booth dancing in the barrio is now political? Doing the samba and cutting the cake at a wedding is political, and not copacetic with your beliefs? It makes those that are condemning it look excessively unhinged. Only one side is making it political and when you make something political you tend to lose.
I guess you could say not subbing it was political but I think it was a good decision. Music is universal. I don’t need to be bilingual to understand the message. And if he doesn’t sing in English making him do so is just silly.
