Apparently, from what I understand based on Facebook and Twitter shit, many are upset over the animal deaths (mainly birds) in the film, with most being upset over the parakeet kill at the start and some even leaving the theater early because of it. Can anyone else confirm similar situations? I know there are other factors at work here for the movie's flop like covid and Gunn, but I'm curious if that had an effect as well.
The R rated violence in general seems to have turned people off the film, Grace Randolph could barely look at the screen apparently and that seems to have contributed to suppressing the box office.
In short, Americans seem to have become serious pussies over the last couple of decades. I miss the 80's and 90's when over the top gore was celebrated and Paul Verhoven was a fuckin' god!
This is especially true when it comes to animals, you can slaughter swathes of human beings in your movie, but God forbid you off the fuckin' dog, because all the women and soy boys will walk out. Perhaps it's because you have a generation that's replaced their babies with 'fur babies' and as a result, the disgust that's a reflex reaction to the death of an innocent, which used to be largely reserved for killing children on screen ('that scene' in 'In Bruges' still shocks me), now it extends to 'OMG they killed Tweety!' Man up America FFS.
Personally, I really enjoyed The Suicide Squad, it only actually has 2 problems.
1) It's basic bitch plot in no way justifies a 2hr 12min running time, the movie seriously needed about 20mins cut and there were plenty of scenes that would not have been missed. This could have been a tighter, much better 1hr 45min movie.
2) It's pretty funny in places but it suffers from 'Whedon Syndrome' quite a bit. Every character has the same snarky voice and doesn't know when to shut the fuck up and as a result a lot of the jokes feel labored.
