Apparently, from what I understand based on Facebook and Twitter shit, many are upset over the animal deaths (mainly birds) in the film, with most being upset over the parakeet kill at the start and some even leaving the theater early because of it. Can anyone else confirm similar situations? I know there are other factors at work here for the movie's flop like covid and Gunn, but I'm curious if that had an effect as well.

The R rated violence in general seems to have turned people off the film, Grace Randolph could barely look at the screen apparently and that seems to have contributed to suppressing the box office.
In short, Americans seem to have become serious pussies over the last couple of decades. I miss the 80's and 90's when over the top gore was celebrated and Paul Verhoven was a fuckin' god!
This is especially true when it comes to animals, you can slaughter swathes of human beings in your movie, but God forbid you off the fuckin' dog, because all the women and soy boys will walk out. Perhaps it's because you have a generation that's replaced their babies with 'fur babies' and as a result, the disgust that's a reflex reaction to the death of an innocent, which used to be largely reserved for killing children on screen ('that scene' in 'In Bruges' still shocks me), now it extends to 'OMG they killed Tweety!' Man up America FFS.

Personally, I really enjoyed The Suicide Squad, it only actually has 2 problems.
1) It's basic bitch plot in no way justifies a 2hr 12min running time, the movie seriously needed about 20mins cut and there were plenty of scenes that would not have been missed. This could have been a tighter, much better 1hr 45min movie.
2) It's pretty funny in places but it suffers from 'Whedon Syndrome' quite a bit. Every character has the same snarky voice and doesn't know when to shut the fuck up and as a result a lot of the jokes feel labored.

The movie "flopped" because people could watch it at their house, and the ones who didn't want to pay a dime got a free HD version of it the night it released as quickly as they could download it. The rest is just people being retarded. How many people would you think were going into "The Suicide Squad", whose promotional material included a shark man ripping a guy in half, only get to offended and walk out when a CGI bird went squish?

Also Grace Randolph is a retard.

There are no MoS "fans"; rather, there are only Snyder fans.
I've called myself a Snyderfag before, but the truth is I only like MoS, BvS, and ZJL aka his capeshit films, I absolutely hated sucker punch, disliked that owl movie he did, and Army of the dead was just meh to me so I wouldn't say I'm a Snyder fan, more like a fan of the edgy DCEU.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering there's people that needed therapy after Infinity War and during my time on Reddit one user said the Winter Soldier was "terrifying" but still what the fuck? How can people be such pussies? Where the birds killed for real during filming? because in that case I could understand them not wanting to support needless animal slaughter but crying over cgi birds is pathetic.

Being upset by fake animal death is fine, you do you. Actively protesting against and shiting on a movie because of fake animal death is where it gets a lot more stupid.
Woke grifter trying to destroy something to siphon money into their own pockets? Shocking.

I think Cavill wanted out the same as Affleck
Can't wait to see how they ruin Lex in the next reboot. Jesus.

Well I guess that confirms it. Covid, Gunn drama, pirating, and the large abundance of violence turned people off. A lot of what I'm seeing is that people expected this to be like an MCU film (what with all the snarky whedon-esque cringe), full of action but fun for the whole family what with all the comedy in the trailers. The minute they saw the canary get ball'd seems to have driven what few audiences of capeshit consoomers this film drew into theaters who are only used to safer MCU films.

Well that's disturbing.

I would hate to play devil's advocate over people getting upset over cgi and strawberry jam violence, but the cgi in this film was pretty realistic until Starro showed up. Even I thought the bird was real for a split second there. And I honestly couldn't tell if Weasel was completely CGI or part costume and part cgi.

At this point, whoever edits these trailers is a liability. The DCEU has the highest ratio of bullshit trailers per movie.

At least with Marvel, you know what you're getting. Few will dare purchase tickets to DC film.

Do you really think Grace Randolph ever has good takes?, in terms of Youtube movies reviewers, she is just below Chris Stuckmann.

Anyway seems like The Suicide Squad overseas is doing really well, which had pretty good drops and in some counties out doing the newcomer Free Guy. Even with HBO Max, the second-week numbers are a disappointment, but with the international numbers, it could just be because the target audience of TSS are more likely to watch it on HBO Max vs cinemas compared to other movies WB have put out this year. I still guess it will get past $200 million worldwide before its cinema run is over.

Unless the Joker 2 flops, WB should still be doing R rated DC movies, but could see a few of them being done on HBO Max instead, something like a Deathstroke or Lobo movie would be a good fit for that.

Free Guy is a pretty good film, but it’s good to hear this is doing fairly well internationally too. I know the plot has some issues, but I hear most of the characters are done well.

My goodness. The first Iron Man would be triggering for these people with Tony's convey being ambushed, him wiping out his Ten Rings captives, and later saving a village from more terrorists. It's amazing some of these people made through the bombing scene from IM3 since the victims' shadows were reminiscent of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings.

Honestly I guess Iron man and the 2008 Hulk were pretty different movies from what the MCU would later become.

Aside from the canary death triggering people, covid restrictions and James Gunn drama, another source of hate I'm seeing is that Harley said some kind of racial slur along with giving her a straight romance instead of making her obsess over Poison Ivy again for the 12th time this year. That and some gripe over James Gunn saying that Bloodsport's masculinity is "toxic masculinity" which is probably the closest thing to modern political sensibility being tied to this movie aside from John Cena's existence, but it doesn't really show up in the film as far as I know.

I will say that from my own point of view that I liked the movie regardless of my views about James Gunn and this is probably the first time the modern incarnation of Harley Quinn wasn't horribly repulsive to me. She's still annoying but at least it feels like a natural evolution from her original character unlike other forced attempts in that this feels like what the Harley from Batman TAS might become after a few more years of mental degeneration, in that she genuinely looks mentally broken instead of being a happy go lucky rebellious teen who don't need no man around and talks like a college girl (although I would still prefer her wearing a jester mask and hat). Other characterizations were a vast improvement over the first and the stylistic choice for scene transitions was nice. The thing I will most praise about this movie is its desire to bring to light a lot of obscure DC lore elements and even give an ancestor to a piece of shit like Arm Fall Off Boy, showing that even the goofiest and weirdest ideas can have a humorous or appealing purpose. However, the constant Whedon-tier dialogue and writing style is this movie's biggest flaw. It can work in some parts but not all the time, and it feels like the stale side-effect felt throughout Hollywood after the MCU's success still persisting. Another problem is that this movie is really giving me some Guardians of the Galaxy vibe and that's pretty annoying. John Cena's character is also terribly insufferable regardless of what anyone may feel about John Cena's irl attitude and hypocrisy. Also while I like Starro, I think its design in the movie was too cartoonish for the final face off. I mean yeah, its a giant starfish from outer space, but even in the old comics it has a bit of an eldritch flare what with its eye not being so anthropomorphized and its limbs were more flat and wavy instead of chubby.

Overall movie Starro just looks... incredibly cute. Which I guess would work if this film were a quirky MCU film or family film, but it ain't.

Regardless, I think its time to put away capeshit for now and focus on other mediums because the MCU and DCEU flood of films have seemingly reached their limits, especially the MCU.

Exactly. I keep screaming it from the rooftops: grim and gritty works for Batman only.

A dark re-imagining of Silver Age crap? Nobody cares about that. Nobody whose opinion matters, anyway.

I personally never saw DC films (even the snyder ones) as miserable, dark and gritty yes, but miserable no, I believe that the people who find them miserable or to quote my coworker "So depressing I lost the will to live" are either parroting some shill or are so used to watching MCU shit that they can't handle anything else, they would probably commit sudoku if they watched The road, but then again they did get triggered by a cgi bird getting balled. That being said I know I'm in the minority here

I think the issue is Snyder comes across as an edgelord with his movies and comes across as really cringeworthy, Batman v Superman especially soured how people would view DC films since it was trying way too hard to be edgy.

He's a Randroid who thinks altruism is evil and basically untrue.
:neckbeard:

Snyder was never the guy to translate these characters. Say what you want about Batman killing people, but Affleck stole the show because Snyder thinks Batman looks cool.

That and he kinda made Superman the opposite of what he was meant to be.

Man, I really need to go back and watch the Superman/Batman/Justice League cartoons.

The worst sin of MoS? It made Smallville look good in comparison.

Heck: Tyler Hoechlin, Dean Cain, Gerard Christopher...all interpretations of different eras of comic books, yet truer to the spirit of the character. Turns out it's really hard to fuck up Superman.

The worst part about Zack is he epitomizes the pretentious type of people who dislike Superhero media. Sure capeshit is well capeshit, but even before that Snyder wanted to make everything like Batman Returns without understanding how it worked there.

His take on Superman was also bad because he made all of Superman's heroic acts look like they're bad things.
