My stance on the matter is that whether a tattoo is cringe or not depends on how meaningful it is in relation to the person who has it. If it holds some kind of substantial cultural significance, then it's fine. If it doesn't, then you're just doodling on yourself. That's why it's cool when sailors, prisoners, tribal warriors, etc. have tattoos but not when a plaid-wearing soybug who vapes and drinks craft beers gets one. If you have a tattoo, then it should signify something about who you are.

I like it when people go all the way with tattoos, along with crazy hairstyles and piercings. It's super risky to do so and it often produces some really awful goblinos but when it's done well I find it great.

I have no middleground though, go all the way with the style or don't do them at all. I would never tattoo myself, though, seems pointless since there isn't anything I would like other people to sese, if it makes sense.
