The journalist who is covering this in supportive terms for the Mail - Cristina Odone, isa hardcore Catholic. She used to be the editor of The Catholic Herald. she's writing articles about the parents saying love conquers all etc etc. There are points the hardcore of all three of the orthdox end of all three Abrahamics occasionally meet on some point. Like blasphemy laws, and this stuff.

This is true. I guess I'm going based on American evangelicals. They would sooner walk on their lips than offer support to a Muslim family. Far easier to ignore it and focus on good, God fearing fundies. Those are a dime a dozen. That's been my experience anyway. They conveniently tend to forget that all Judaism, Islam, and Christianity share a common root. They're far more sympathetic to Jews and therefore Islam definitely takes the back seat.

The parents are bouncing in and out of court contesting the status of the child who is busted as fuck due to some horrible stroke-type thing, and is on permanent life support and ventilation which the doctors now wish to terminate arguing she is irreversibly brain-damaged. The parents have hired lawyers and imans and have now produced the compelling evidence of her rictus claw hand/arm bouncing out of a bowl of carefully-placed water to prove she is responsive and not at all brain damaged. They have got further with their case than the Gard family ever did. They have now secured the right to do what the Gards didn't which is move the kid abroad for treatment. For some reason, an Italian hospital has offered to treat the child.

Fatwas are involved, because what British courts should recognise is religious rulings by backward desert religions. Maybe if the Gards had converted and waved the Koran around instead of invoking boring old Jesus, they'd have fared better.



Some are pointing out, rightly, that this ruling will put courts denying the rights of say, Jehovahs Witnesses to withold blood transfusions from kids who need them on a sticky wicket. Not to mention every other parent whose case against a hospital relies on a religious argument + some shittastic 'test' of the potato's reflexes.

Funny, there are plenty of Catholic hospitals in the USA. Wonder why haven’t already got wards going to keep brain dead bodies on life support machines indefinitely? I mean if it’s such a big important deal that the pope comments on such cases pretty regularly why is it just a single hospital in Italy willing to take in these cases? Why doesn’t the pope insist all Catholic hospital step up to the plate and offer indefinite life support to all these families dealing with mean hospitals and doctors.

I’m not Catholic, so I don’t understand shrines. To me it seems like it means they will have an area where there will be a statue of some saint for the “brain damaged” and people can pray to it to heal their family member.

That's really interesting because in the US the people shrieking about Gard and Evans were pretty much exclusively fundie pro-life types who were using those cases to insist that socialized medicine is evil and murders innocent potato babies.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle Raqeeb, if they acknowledge her at all. US fundies tend to despise Muslims even though they have tons of shit in common with them.

Seems like fundies and the hardcore Catholics took it from there. Pope Francis is very progressive regardless of what anyone outside the Church thinks. He’s despised by some factions because he’s a bit too liberal for their taste. I mean, homos and women who’ve had abortions not going straight to hell???? Katie, bar the door!!!! You’ll see the pro life Catholics on this stuff, but it’s important to understand that there is a major political undercurrent there that American politics has a field day exploiting.

Yeah, it was funny (but not surprising) to see the US fundies coming out in support, especially as the prevailing argument up until that point was that parents should have the right to demand their child be kept alive no matter what. Not because of religion, but because a child is their parent’s property.

“Doctors can’t tell parents what’s best for their child! Doctors can’t play God! (excusing the glaringly obvious fact that doctors already had “played god” by putting them on life support). The doctors are wrong! If you REALLY love your baby you’ll never give up!”

It was the latter argument that really offended a lot of people. There were bereaved parents on forums and social media saying “Well actually, I let my child go BECAUSE I loved them and didn’t want them to suffer anymore”.

From the posts I’ve seen of this Catholic sect, they view Pope Francis as an illegitimate pope. They view Pope Benedict as the real pope.


Update: I found a press release about the Catholic Hospital that they plan to build in the US, Casa USA. It will have a rehab center for the brain dead and for the severely brain damaged.

Not really. Not anymore. Every child has a right to an education. What usually ends up happening is they're relegated to the appropriate SPED programs within a normal school or they're sent to alternative schools. However, with kids that have no real cognitive deficiencies, the tendency is to try and mainstream them which becomes a fucking nightmare for the teacher and the other students. If they're too disruptive they'll be moved to SPED, but they really try not to do that. There's also an entire division of state government that deals with tard parents who can't or won't accept the decision and sue the state to have their tard included in regular classes. They'll even sue the state to have their tard sent to a boarding school out of state at an enormous cost to taxpayers all to "give their child the best education possible" which is code for "I don't want to raise this tard, please take it off my hands".

I would like to say I'm not sure if this is in all states. But I know in our state if your child has violent fits the schools can put them on a half day schedule. No matter their age. My dad is a bus drive and he has a few 'special needs' kids that are between the ages of 10-15 that he shuttles home around 11:30 because that's when they have to go home because the school doesn't and can't deal with them through lunch and free time and the afternoon.

I know when my kid was in primary school one of her classmates was a little evil vile thing. Would freak out and throw stuff and hit teachers and his parents were idiots and were against medications. So He'd go home everyday at 11 am like the little kindergartners in half day school did.

My dad is a bus drive and he has a few 'special needs' kids that are between the ages of 10-15 that he shuttles home around 11:30 because that's when they have to go home because the school doesn't and can't deal with them through lunch and free time and the afternoon.

Congressman Sean Duffy and his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy just announced that their newborn daughter has Down syndrome as well as a defective heart. Sean is leaving Congress to care for the baby as she is going to need to have open heart surgery within a few months. They are devout Catholics, and Rachel conceived this baby at 47 years old and has eight other children. Almost seems like they were actively trying to have a baby with chromosomal or other health issues.
