Congressman Sean Duffy and his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy just announced that their newborn daughter has Down syndrome as well as a defective heart. Sean is leaving Congress to care for the baby as she is going to need to have open heart surgery within a few months. They are devout Catholics, and Rachel conceived this baby at 47 years old and has eight other children. Almost seems like they were actively trying to have a baby with chromosomal or other health issues.

Ugh. More power to her if that's what she wants, but I couldn't imagine having a child at 47. It's pretty rare to get pregnant at that age, I wonder if they were using fertility drugs?

She claims that none of her kids were planned, so I doubt they ever used fertility drugs. I think this baby is the third one she's had after 40. Rachel turns 48 later this month, so it's pretty crazy imo. She's lucky all of her other kids are healthy; her oldest daughter is now at UChicago and seems to be very bright and ambitious.

Getting knocked up naturally at 47 is improbable, but it can occasionally happen. Wouldn't put it past hyper-fixated on breeding types to use some form of medical tech to make it happen though.

Anyway, it's asking for a risky pregnancy and a baby with a high chance of ... well, exactly what they got. Doesn't seem worth the effort to me. You already have EIGHT children, perhaps it's best to stop breeding new ones to prove a point and focus on the ones you have, who will now get even less attention now there's a special child with endless physical and mental issues around.

I feel sorriest for the five youngest kids, one of whom is only three years old. The other two older ones will be leaving for college within one to three years.

And if they did conceive with fertility drugs just to have a ninth kid while pushing 50, they're completely reprehensible. I highly doubt they'd ever cop to it anyway. Maybe I'm too generous, but I tend to think this pregnancy was a natural fluke, though they may have been cocky since all their other kids are healthy.

There’s nothing wrong with the DS lady, I think the problem is the dishonest way the media is portraying her situation. Woman with Down syndrome graduates college and becomes a teacher!

They are giving the impression she graduated college and is now a working teacher. But if you read the story it sounds like she was pushed through a teaching college for many, many years until they let her graduate in some fashion. At the very end they clarify she’s now an “assistant” in a classsroom with special needs kids - not a teacher.

It’s the “you can do anything, there are no limits” BS. There are limits. People with Down syndrome have very real intellectual deficits. Trying to force someone with DS to go to college and have job/career is absurd. You are pushing societal norms they should not be expected to meet, and they don’t need to meet them to have a happy and meaningful life.

People have some strange ideas about DS. Even the very highest functioning DS people can only live semi-independently. The vast majority of people with DS require a lifetime of care and supervision.

She finally got a kid that will never leave the nest. A Down syndrome kid is intellectually forever a child and will always need the care of their parents/family.

What’s super fucked up is that having such a baby at 47 means it’s very likely one of the eight siblings will end up taking care of their adult sibling with DS once the parents are gone. Older DS people can be quite difficult to care for and they generally have many health issues.

Thanks mom! I’m sure one of her daughters will enjoy caring for her own children alongside her 30 year old DS adult sister one day.

It's not the first 'heartwarming' DS career story I've seen. Recently there was some DS girl who became a 'personal trainer'. Translation, they let her lead an easy peasy aerobics exercise class in some local gym a few times after taking some rock-bottom local FE college certificate. Or one 'becomes a model' because some designer let her walk to get the usual press attention they would not get otherwise. It's not like there's a career for short, low muscle toned, fat-to-flabby, funny-faced people with intellectual (IQ doesn't get above the 60s and is often much lower) and physical impairments in reality in the Royal Ballet or anything requiring extreme physical fitness , artistic and intellectual focus.

I hear you on the care situation too. I've known situations post-death of the intellectually-impaired's parents that would chill your blood. Intellectually impaired adults without family can draw the attention of exploitative people. Given advances in surgery for heart defects etc anyone who produces a DS baby in their forties will highly likely outlive them and needs to take their long term future into account.

Interestingly, IVF is not encouraged by the Church. I mean, have all the kids, but at their level of Catholic conservatism it’s a tad taboo. It’s possible that it happened the old fashioned way, but that extremely rare and no fucking wonder why the child isn’t “normal”.

Parenting a special needs child, CHILD, in your retirement years. That’s not the natural order. Evolution works folks. We have children when we’re young for a reason. The Save Bobby group is now closed as of today. The family is fundraising to pay for a life flight to a nursing home that will care for Bobby. The family believes he just needs a little time to get better.

I don’t know where they are planning on getting him a tracheotomy. Maybe they will fly him down to Guatemala like they have other brain dead kids.

IVF is a no-no but fertility drugs are a-ok. The crux of the matter to Catholics is conception must occur inside a woman’s womb.

I’m not sure this woman used fertility drugs though. She’s obviously very fertile with eight kids. While natural pregnancies at that age are very rare - it’s because fertility declines and most women don’t want to be pregnant at 47 - but it can happen.

The fact the kid has DS and she required a c-section after seven natural childbirths indicates her body should have stopped at baby 7.

Meanwhile in Ohio they are passing laws to force women to have DS babies. Terminating a regular baby, a-ok! But Terminating a DS baby is forbidden!

Suing for wrongful birth is a thing in the USA too. Such suits were one reason abortion was finally legalized. Pregnant women exposed to German measles in 1962 had babies with devastating and horrific disabilities. Doctors not bothering to test pregnant women who reported rubella symptoms, even when they requested it, went on to have babies with catastrophic birth defects (blind, deaf, retarded, CP, etc..) They sued the doctors for wrongful birth. What these babies suffered makes DS look like a blessing in comparison.

Update on “Save Bobby”. The hospital they were going to send him to changed their minds. The mother has been posting several live feed videos where she’s having a panic attack. Bobby is going to be taken off “life support” tomorrow at noon. She begged people to come and protest outside the children’s hospital.

There are now people standing out the children’s hospital with signs.

Ugh I hate seeing people gush about "what a blessing" Down Syndrome kids are! "She has an extra chromosome which just means she's extra cute!" ::eye roll:: I've always wished that mentally disabled babies could be euthanized shortly after birth (should they be a surprise a la Claire "Stare" Hartley), but seeing stupid comments like that make me wish we could euthanize the parent(s) for good measure.

Yeah, the "extra cute" thing was nauseating.

This little girl, should she survive her surgeries, will have a lot of support (medical, familial) and will probably live to be 60. Like someone else said, that means her siblings are going to have to care for her when her parents cannot. Since there are eight of them, I guess they could all split up the care-taking responsibilities and lessen the burden, but it's still a lot to put on your kids, especially as something like 50% of people with Down syndrome end up with Alzheimer's in later life.
