Update to the Niftski drama.

Some nobodies have released a dockey to deboonk Niftski even though it starts out by saying they don't intend to do that. I've attached the dockey and some recorded Discord calls it linked to.

The document is mostly misdirection. It does the following:

1. Claims the vote would have gone the same way without Averge's influence.
2. Declares Niftski is heckin' mean.
3. Bitches about Niftski dropping a public video because he's got a bigger audience than everyone else involved.
4. Complains about people involved getting harassed.
5. Whines about some screenshot in Niftski's doc containing the first and last name of some nobody in Averge's private server. He call this "doxxing" with two xx's.
6. Complains messages look better with more context.
7. Gets mad Niftski won't appologize for releasing this publicly.
8. Complains about the behavior of some other nobody on Niftski's side.

This was coordinated with Averge since at the same time he released this statement announcing he's stepping down from the mod team and apologized, though to noone in particular.

Other speedrunners thrive on the hive mind and without comments niftski silenced his own conversation from the start. People aren't discussing. No video from Kosmic or Bismuth. Even Jobst is silent - though I suspect he'll do an algorithm friendly 20 minute video in a week (that includes a 10 minute Raid Shadow Legend sponsor).

I did see that Bismuth commented in the r/speedrun thread on the subject.

Tecate, an former SMB speedrunner and leaderboard moderator released a video discussing his thoughts on the rule change. He says the community agreed years ago that there's no unfair advantage to playing on a keyboard over controller and vice versa. Consequently he believes there would be no unfair advantage switching between them either. This adds more fuel to the fire that the rule change was a deliberate attempt to stifle his progress.

Niftski might be a speedrunning chad but he was still a bitch by turning off comments.

He was trying to not get banned from the leaderboard, but I think it backfired since it gave his video less reach than it otherwise would've had. I didn't mention it in my original post, but the jannies are still going to punish him for going public and making them look bad, so it didn't even payoff.

EnglishBen, known as one of the more popular GTA: Vice City runners and a friend of a well-known GTA:SA speedrunner Joshimuz decided to release a video where he proclaims to drop future playthroughs of a GTA:VC mod "The Backstabber's Blues" (modpage link) and to completely disassociate from the mod author:

The reasoning mostly boils down to him being made aware by one of his fans that the developer of the mod, who goes by the username "Northstar", uses no-no words (such as the Nigger-word), amongst other things, when chatting with others in his own public Discord server while also not preventing other users from doing so either.

The dev then proceeded to write up a post on EnglishBen's video about his thoughts and what apparently happened after the initial announcement of disassociation:
TL;DR: Dev claims EBen's fans came to raid his server with black gay porn to have it taken down. Dev also expresses disappointment that EBen and his fans can't mind their own business on how other communities talk between eachother and also try applying their anglosphere-centric guilt-tripping rhetoric to them in regards to saying words such as Nigger (the developer is a native Russian).



After that there was some meaningless back and forth, with EnglishBen deciding to at least leave the playthrough videos up for "archival purposes".

My opinion: EnglishBen doesn't come off as the "sensitive young man" type, sometimes using nods to specific types of jokes during his streams and not having his pronouns listed during speedrunning marathons (that's a prominent thing, sadly) which they all do by default nowadays. My take is that since someone from his server brought it out into the open, he was put into position where he was pretty much forced to take sides. Since streaming is one of EBen's main income sources it is pretty obvious why he chose what he did and why he decided to go out of his way to announce it, since we all know which party is more keen to spend money on frivolous things like stream subscriptions and whatnot.

The dev comes off as reasonable and I completely understand him, as anyone who is from a non-anglo/"western" country will know that using such language is just as insignificant as using any other type of swearword - political correctness is still mostly reserved for politicians over there.

My thoughts exactly, he was probably put on the spot by his fanbase becoming aware of it, and considering he's garnered a bunch of left-leaning paypigs, they'd eat him alive if he made the wrong choice.
I feel bad for the guy, I genuinely believe he just wants to shoot the shit, but is perfectly aware of what'd happen if he would show even a sliver of his chuddyness to the vultures that feed him.

Like I saw a video about some yugioh game where a guy found how to manipulate the seed to brute force RNG and that's okay but just manipulating the drop tables is bad because it's cheating? A lot of those things in general become insane random dice rolls with no correlation to any ability or memorization.

And with all those degenerated that waste their lives just doing the same dice toss over and over, how do they buy groceries? Is it all welfare? Who watches them, is it other speedrunners?

My first instinct is to agree with Fatriarchy there. You are essentially modifying game files, and my first reaction is to think that goes against the spirit of the whole thing.
But then what about things like source ports? I think there are certain games where speedruns which are run on specific ports of a game.
Or what about games where runners will use a specific version that has some unpatched trick because it's faster?... Where do you draw the line with modifying game files? If the devs modify the game files is that an issue?

I think in the end it would come down to community consensus wouldn't it? If enough people running the game think it's more fun and interesting to modify drop tables to a certain value, then that would be the way to do it.
At the end of the day, it is up to the people participating in the "sport" to determine what they think the rules of the game should be and abide by them.

Modifying the game files and then pretending that you didn't would indeed be cheating and gay. But if you modify the game files and are clear about what you modified, and then other people think that is more fun and do the same, then it's all good.
