Might be worth having a poll on how well this movie's going to do. I'd imagine they've splurged significantly on this film now, what with Sonic's revamp (which looks great) so it'd better make good returns, which I think is very likely considering the brand.

Some of the gags were quite funny, I'll admit. I think it'll be a good popcorn flick and Jim Carrey going full ham will only be enjoyable to me.

I think I'll go see it. It looks cute enough to give a pass. A dumb popcorn flick to waste a boring afternoon is worth it in my opinion.

As I said before, the design is infinitely better, but the trade-off is that the movie now looks like a mediocre kids movie than the garbage fire that first trailer showed. I'm debating whether I should see it because I'm morbidly curious but I don't think it will be nearly as fun.

I also love that it's opening on Valentine's Day, as if any Sonic fan would actually have a date to bring to the movie.

I'm digging the Sonic redesign. Deciding to go all in on Sonic being cartoony, as if he was in a fully CGI animated movie, instead of a half assed attempt at realism was the best choice they could have went with. I'll miss how fucking horrible the old Sonic design was though. They removed the old trailer from their channel (understandable since they redesigned Sonic, but still).

Maybe CWC and Sockness are going to go on a Valentine's Day date to this (probably not, because he still has the BLARMS)

I can't believe it. They actually fucking fixed it, and it actually looks good.

Agreed.

Granted, I still think it'll probably not be that great because it's Sonic and that franchise tends to attract a lot of weirdness, but the fact that they actually went and listened to the audience and changed their product accordingly is a good sign that things might slowly be changing for the better after the bland malaise that is 2010's pop culture, where companies openly insulting their audiences has been the norm for the past five years or so.

I think it's because Detective Pikachu actually turned out to be pretty good and while that was still just a popcorn kids' comedy, it's notable for being the first movie to "break the curse" on live-action video game adaptations. My best guess is that the original plan was to make the Sonic movie as a quick cash-in on the IP and because it's a video game movie, they were convinced it was going to fail anyway but between the backlash that the first trailer got and the success of Detective Pikachu, they changed course.

I did think the first Sonic looked way more halfassed than the redesign one (now they put a lot of effort into showing that he's actually expressive). Instead of the theory that the first sonic was bad on purpose so people, especially the notoriously fickle Sonic fans, are happy with the final design, I think your theory makes more sense. The first sonic design was on merch apparently and he looks like that first leaked design sheet, so I don't think bait and switch Sonics could have ever been real.

The bait and switch theory always seemed really dumb to me. What's the point of wasting so much time and money when the only result of that is that people think it's terrible and made by out of touch hollywood executives. As opposed to say, making something good from the start that people would want to watch.

Any ways the film actually looks.......... decent. Not a must see but maybe something for a slow weekend or a rental
The only excuse for watching this is if you have mental health issues, an extremely unhealthy attachment to your childhood, or you need to keep a preschooler entertained for 90 minutes. The last excuse is why I've "seen" every Ice Age film a few dozen times.

Will this be the moment when sonic finally takes off his shoes? Find out in february of 2020!
